Anti virus are not necessary if you're careful enough. However how cautious you may be, the virus may come from USB drives as well. With nothing to scan it through, you can easily get infected.

I myself use Avast. Is it good? I have no idea. I just keep it just in case. It doesn't really disturb nor take much resource.
