Hi all,

Thanks for all the input and I took the advice I uninstall &%^(%$#* Norton (my apologies to Norton supporter for badmouthing Norton tongue.gif ) and chose MSE to install. It was a breeze and no payment needed. Ok, I'm a cheapo I go for free things rclxs0.gif

i just use avira free version...as long as u are becareful what you are downloading, a free version of anti virus is more than enuf..those who pay a fee to get norton, kaspersky or whatever yearly is just  sweat.gif

There are some kind of malware (malicious software) that can turn your computer into a bot, When this occurs, your computer can perform automated tasks over the Internet without your knowledge.

Nowadays, best to secure all possible loopholes for protection. Apparently, even Mac is slowly becoming more vulnerable to attacks.

it's always best to go with "best practices" in using computer.

anti-virus is only a form of deterrent / passive measure. if the definition is not there when there's an outbreak, the AV won't detect it.

Hi all,

Do we really need an anti-virus for our computer?

I bought this computer and as usual it comes with Norton but I find it very invasive so I uninstalled it.

If anti-virus prog is a must then suggest which is good? Err... I cheapskate prefer to have free one. So any suggestions please?

Thanks all! smile.gif

yes. u need it. UNLESS, u never insert friend pen drive, u don't use internet, then u dont need AV, the moment u r connected to internet, the risk of getting infected is there.

It is advisable. Unless you are really computer expert. How are you going to protect your computer from virus from pendrive, drive by downloads? Unless you want to virtualise your whole PC using Returnil or Deep Freeze, then you don't need an antivirus.

Than again, you could ended up giving your bank no/password to phishing sites. In the end, it is better to have antivirus.

@annoymous1234,
You forget to mention avast
