As for GOTY edition is just long term brand awareness campaign by the publishers.

Borderlands Moxxi Underdome - eff this no xp/no loot

DA2 Exiled Prince - US$7 to download 50mb unlock code. and he won't sleep with your character because he is "religious" wtf

MvC3 - US$5 PER CHARACTER. and now there is a rumor of "Super MvC3" edition and 14 DLC characters at Captivate '11

scariest thing about game retail is that after the 1st week of release, it cannot sale anymore because it will be overshadowed by next weeks big release (unless the game is CoD)

technically these DLC were done during a period where the game is 'code freeze' -where all the content in the game is finalized and bug tested.

so those dudes who were making levels having nothing productive to do.

DLC was a way for developers to make money post game release. but clearly we've seen a lot of shit DLC (Capcom).
