The gal i like did exactly the same as you did.
However, she kissed me when its dark and comfortable (we were in a cinema )
I was totally not expecting the kiss as i was looking at the movie..but what she did that night was totally embedded in my brain till now (2 years already)

What i want to point out is, i didn't avoid her. She makes me feel a lot more happier and makes me wanted to love her more.
Ts, i think the environment factors were all wrong when you kissed him.
Another reason could be that he is just not into you (he would be finding you tonight if he did).
