Very odd... HDD is supposed to automatically format when you replace it and turn on the PS3. Try putting that hard disk into a USB case, then access it using Linux and delete any visible partitions on it. Then put it back and see if the PS3 can detect the hard disk. Dun create partitions on it and format it on the PC, let the PS3 detect and do that itself. If still cannot, take it to a video game shop or Sony Style and make them format it for you.
