As prices of some BDs from Amazon UK are cheaper than those from Amazon US, it is very tempting to buy from Amazon UK. The only problem is that some of them are locked to Region B and thus cannot be played on BD players available locally that is for Region A. One solution is to get a region-free BD player such as Oppo or Dune (or at least can play Region A and Region B) but the cost is too high for peasants like me and the less fortunate. Since most of us already have a Region A BD player, why not just buy another Region B player? This should definitely be cheaper than a Dune or Oppo and should last twice as long theoretically since we will have two machines instead of one. The PQ and AQ may not be as good as an Oppo but the difference will only be seen or heard in high-end equipment so for normal users, it does not matter.
The only problem is where to get a Region B player locally. Maybe some enterprising and rajin forumers can bring some in and if they don't plan to make too much profit, there should be some buyers. At least I will grab one if not too costly. Or maybe bro Andrew (hope he is reading this) can pop over to S'pore and bring one in every weekend (assuming they are available there) as service to his fellow BD collectors here! Any takers? biggrin.gif

I would suggest u get it on e-bay from Australia as they are region B. Or ask someon to carry over. Spore is Region A as well. U can ask them to ship over, but the tax will be likely (26.5%) and if u r unlucky u need to apply for approval from JBE since its an electrical appliance.

At the end of the day u hv 2 boxes, but if it suits ur needs, go for it.

The Dune is abt RM1600 and does the job.

What price would be interesting to people?

Maybe those frequent shopers to S'pore can find out and inform us! They may be catering for tourists from Region B countries.

Australia is Region B but shipping in from Australia would be too expensive and also not forgetting the potential customs duty.
It would be ideal if you have friends or relatives coming back from Australia, can ask them to carry one back for you.
I brought back one Sony S370 from Australia in Dec during my holidays and no tax.
Harvey Norman Australia always have promotion there.

from my experience with buying stuff from SG, you don't really have to worry about tax/JBE issues if you are:
1. driving and you are using 2nd link (I almost never take causeway, so can't comment)
2. flying and you landing in KLIA or LCCT

if you take a flight, then you can claim the 7% GST at the airports assuming you meet the criteria (duration of stay etc).
if you take firefly, and land in subang, then nearly all passengers are required to have their baggage scanned, then see your luck with the customs...

I'm not a fan of the causeway or going thru JB. 2nd link works well for me.
Another option is to take a bus/train (which I quite like as well), take a day trip for shopping/makan, and come home with ur goodies

We know that Singapore is also Region A for BD but can anyone confirm that Region B players are also available there for tourists from that region?

Alternatively, you can buy mod chip and modify your current player to Multiregion Blu-ray Player.

You can look for AVForum. In 2009, I saw an article to teach forumer "How to make your Panasonic BD60 or BD80 Blu-ray Player Multiregion".

In that case, you only need to buy a small mod chip and cable to mod the Panasonic BD30/50/35/55/60/80 into multiregion Blu-ray player.

Of course, there is risk involved. So, if you want to do that, bear in mind the risk and your warranty will void.

Doing a mod is certainly a risky business as you may end up with a BD player that CANNOT play any region BDs! rclxub.gif Unless you are a DIY guy.

The best bet would be suggestion from bro Jimmy.

How much did the Sony 370 cost in Aussie and did you need to modify the power cord to suit our local power point? Did you hand carry or checked in with your luggage? Thanks.

I got it for A$160 from Harvey Norman.
No need to modify power cord, just use plug adapter from local supermarket.
I put it in my hand carry luggage.

guys, i also faced the problems b4. at first i thought my BD player is Zone free, so i bought lots of BD from UK, then, lots cannot be played. so when my sister went to UK, she hand carried back a Zone B Panasonic BDP-85 for me. Not onl;y it played Zone B, it also produced very good PIC quality. I paid RM1200 for the player (consider middle upper end player there) & kena airport custom officer RM200 (with no receipts given, u know what i mean).

overall i felt it is worthit. Each Zone B disc saved me around RM20, 70 disc already breakeven. The player was my top until recently i upgarde to OPPO 93 & Pioneer LX91.

for those with PIONEER BDP Player, actually u can play lots of Zone B disc without crack.open/modification.

most likely u can play UK OPTIMUM/MOMENTUM/STUDIO CANAL release.
u cannot play big studio release.

do the trick with your remote control.

1)when u load the disc, a message of Zone B appear.
2) press "stop" button. the disc will stop. message will gone & pioneer screen saver appear.
3)press "next", the disc will jump to chapter 1 & start.
