So far I didn't encounter problem with Shell. My recent encounter is at Esso Jalan Pasar, KL.
Places to use AMEX card?
Lowyat.NET -> Finance, Business and Investment House -> Credit Cards, Debit Cards, Prepaid Cards and Loyalty Cards|

I haven't had much issues using my AMEX at Shell stations either. My last was at the Shell station at the Jln Duta toll North-bound.

About TNB, I would like to point out that Kedai Tenaga does not accept AMEX. AMEX is only acceptable through Autopay submitted via AMEX not Kedai Tenaga.
