I've actually got a few friends from this gym, Pushmore that can do it.
There's a few ways they do this.
1. A ridiculous amount of bodyweight pull-ups combined with weighted pull-ups. This fellow pulls I think 60KG weighted, at a bodyweight of 65-70KG.
2. Cellphone trick. You pull yourself with 2 arms, and then hold with 1 arm. Pull out your cell phone and send a text message to your friend. When your friend receives it, then you can descend. (A climber's trick) It's said that 1 arm pull-ups are mostly CNS dependant (I agree) and thus if you can coordinate sending a text message while still holding up there, you'd be set for 1 arm pull-ups.
3. Kipping 1 arm pull-ups. Hold the bar with 1 arm, and kick yourself up.
I highly doubt it's got anything to do with your squats or deadlifts. This fellow that does the 60KG weighted pull-ups, only does squats with 70KG. He just climbs and does many pull-ups.
