Cross sensor as in the single point that is sensitive to vertical and horizontal smile.gif

D90's center AF is cross sensor, the remaining 10 is vertical or horizontal depending on location. The 51AF of the semi pro and pro bodies have 15 sensors in middle which are cross sensors, and the rest being vertical sensor.

If you did notice, the center AF (cross sensor) focuses faster and more accurate than the side sensors.

Sure, under normal condition any points is good. But under low light and using big aperture lens then cross sensor is critical ;-).

If you look from viewfinder you won't know which is cross sensor... no indicator actually.
