Depends on your usage...
Im currently running Vista Ultimate on my machine.
Just XP1800+ and 512MB RAM.
I can say still okay if said used for web surfing and mp3 playback.
I noticed no lagging when playing mp3 while surfing the net even with Aero theme n side bar enabled. Probably when play games or uses more cpu or ram intensive programs, you will notice the lagging. Besides there's nothing special about Vista. Its just bloated. I hate the way they change the navigation. Its like a maze in Vista. Its really a new experience like M$ claimed but definately not a good one.

BTW, its sucks so badly that you will have to disable the user control thing. Damn thing is going to ask you everytime you wanna install/remove a programs/drivers. I havent try the Flip3D thing but overall wasnt very impressed.

Just a screen shot...

I think MS exegerate about Vista minimum requirement. As long as you have something like a ATI Radeon 9700/9800, with 512MB and a half decent processor like 1.5GHz (or above, except for P4).. it should be enough to do daily stuffs like checking emails, mp3s, chit chat messenger, etc. You can even disable some of the useless stuffs that does nothing but I dont have time to play around with it. I cant even connect with other PC using XP though I have the same workgroup. Weird. Haf to restart in XP liao... going to format soon...

DX9 card are:-

Nvidia 6 series and above
As for ATI, I believe its for 9500 and above...

If you want SM3, yeah, then its X series and above...
Honestly nothing to shout about Vista... Im downloading the RTM via some torrent and already have a crack for the expiry date. Im not sure which version Im using via the screenshot cos I borrow the dvd from my bro. In true, Vista is bloated. Apple does the same if not better effect for Aero alike theme and they did it with 512MB or less. M$ is basically screwed. There's no reason to install vista now cos there are not enough drivers for it. If you want to try it out, dual boot. You will regret if you format your windows xp partition just to install vista.

I dont use Apple, its just a comparison.

It cant be helped if you feel good about Vista. Everyone has difference perception. I just feel an OS taking up more than 500MB of ram is nothing but bloated. DWM is nothing but a tool to utilise your DX9 card in desktop mode. Although it said offloading the processing to video card, but having to use so much ram means the processor will be doing works too.

Vista has 85% of the drivers but if you got a all-in-one printer, then you will be out of your luck. Not to mention the drivers for Prodigy LT.

i think someone wrote a driver for vista, check out prodigy's user forum discussion..i myself am using prodigy 192..found a driver that worked..but seems quite buggy , will get BSOD sometimes...

I got that too. SQ not as good as what I get in Windows XP. Besides its just a normal drivers without ASIO.

I really dont know how to get my vista machine to connect to my other machine using WinXP. I got the same IP as I did in XP and even the same workgroup. Just dunnot why it wont connect. It connects to internet just fine, which mean I have no problem connecting with my router.

for those who says that vista can't detect xp's pc, it's not true...i tried it before between my current vista pc and the other xp pc on the same workgroup and file sharing plus printer sharing IS POSSIBLE...maybe you've missed out some firewall settings...check that ...
