Need recommendation here:

Budget: Around RM2000

Purpose:Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Normal editing job which involves a lot of typing

Size : 14" is enough already

Specs : Prefer i5, but am not sure whether it is a must to me. (I can't figure out the main differences between i3 and i5) Phenom may be OK, too.

Brand : Not restricted
Thanks.

No gaming?
Then,
Acer Aspire 4750, i5-2410M + Intel HD3000@RM1999
Lenovo G470, i5-2410M + Intel HD3000@RM1999

I would choose Lenovo because of the ergonomic keyboard, will be good for typists nod.gif

CPU core 2 duo, RAM 4 GB enough~
*
LOL, Intel Atom already enough if like that laugh.gif
The more powerful the processor and amount of RAMs, the faster the rendering time...
GPU, if optimized, will only help abit... so the importance of CPU still outweighs that of GPU nod.gif

Intel HD3000 got Shader Model 3.0 and OpenGL 2.0 or not?
*
Not sure about the specifics, sorry laugh.gif Any sifus can help? notworthy.gif
But a quick check from the web its stated that RAM>CPU>GPU for Photoshop nod.gif
An additional GPU would be good, but not really necessary

Btw, you know Xiang Zhi? You seemed very familiar lol

Yeap, N43Sn, i7-2630QM + GT550M, apparently the palm rest is not brushed aluminium like that of the N53Sn, which is kinda nice as well~
My friend's N43Sn which arrived yesterday after 2-3 weeks wait:

For about 3k budget, is there anything for me that has about the same specs as Dell XPS series? I'm looking for 12"-14". Need something light and has 6-cell batteries.

My personal preference will be anything besides Acer. smile.gif

Intel® Core™ i7-740QM Processor(1.73GHz,4Core/8Threads,turbo boost up to 2.93Ghz,6M cache), Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64bit (English), 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 2GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 425M (for Core-i7 processors).

I'll need it for photos editing (Photoshop, LightRoom), video editing, movie watching, surfing Internet and no gaming...

Thank you in advance. smile.gif
*
Almost all laptops have 6-cell batteries now nod.gif
Well, the thing is those running on i7-2630QM have rather short battery lives... so its either you compromise on battery life, or compromise on performance...
And since you're doing video editing? Wouldn't a 15" with FullHD be better? hmm.gif

I'm OK if i3 or i5 does the work equally well too. biggrin.gif
Oh the video editing is kinda rare though, most of the time is photo editing so I need good resolution display. biggrin.gif
I'm always travelling so 15" sounds heavy to me. biggrin.gif
*
Well, unfortunately there's no high-resolution 14" for that price range, you'll just have to make do with the standard 1366x768 nod.gif
These 2 will be good:
13" Asus U31Sd, i5-2410M + Nvidia GT520M@RM2999
14" Asus U41Sv, i5-2410M + Nvidia GT540M@RM2899

Both have rather strong performance and battery life nod.gif
If you want to save more money, then the:
Acer TimelineX 4830TG, i5-2410M + GT540M@RM2499

I know you don't want Acer but its has really improved over the years, and this one is simply too irresistible haha laugh.gif
Oh ya, it has long batter life as well~

Ah ha, I'll look into those Asus models. The RM 100 difference is just the display size?
Is Asus a recommended brand for laptop?
All this while I'm having only IBM, Lenovo and Dell laptop. laugh.gif

Why is that Acer so cheap? tongue.gif
*
The RM100 difference is also because of the difference in terms of GPU performance apart from size nod.gif
Yeap, Asus is a good brand, especially when its the U and N series we're talking about laugh.gif
The U series generally aims at packing power & portability together in one laptop, so it'll be ideal for mobile users, no compromises thumbup.gif

Well, Acers are often know for its low price but same, if not better specs hehe~ brows.gif

I like the thinness. drool.gif
Where can I get it? No online purchase right? Lazy to drag back from shop. laugh.gif
Which shop in LYP offers this laptop?

Added on May 5, 2011, 3:41 pmOh wait, it doesn't come with DVD writer? sad.gif
*
Well, you can always find hikari85 and marcus20125 for online purchasing, they're some of the more popular online sellers~
Or you can take a stroll in Garage Sales, there are other sellers as well nod.gif
Not sure which LYP stores have the laptop, long time din't go there adi hehe~

U41Sv has optical drive whereas U31 don't have... We don't usually use optical drives now do hehe? laugh.gif

P/S: Wow, you looked like a pro photographer notworthy.gif notworthy.gif

sad.gif Yeah, that's right too but luckily they give free external writer, how reliable it is compared to the stock version? unsure.gif
Thanks for the info, will look into it again.

Haha. Pro? Look only but actually no. tongue.gif

Added on May 5, 2011, 3:56 pmAlso I see anyone selling U31, they are selling U36, big difference? I see it is NV 310M instead of NV 540M.
*
Yeah, most brands will offer a free external write along with the laptop purchased... They're as reliable as the stock version, just make sure not to drop it and you'll be fine laugh.gif
LOL, humble la, got post in Photography section? Later I go see see LOL laugh.gif (sorry off topic)

The GPU on the U31 is Nvidia GT520M, even though its not very good compared to GPUs in other laptops of the same class, its still way better than Nvidia G310M laugh.gif
Even the integrated Intel3000HD is on par/better than the Nvdia G310M
Oh ya, the U31sd runs on the new Sandy Bridge processor summore, so its best that you take that one instead of the U36Jc nod.gif

Its kinda new, so you may need to spend some time finding it nod.gif

shakehead.gif Doesn't matter how weak or how rubbish the Nvidia G310M is, integrated Intel HD3000 would never better than it.

Its time to move on bro: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-HD-Grap...00.37948.0.html

And I'm not personally fond of the G310M, just look at my laptop laugh.gif
And Oh ya, for Photoshop, its RAM>CPU>GPU, double checked...
iinm, the CUDA on the G310M doesn't really help much... perhaps can ask astria sifu to clarify this

The processor is high-end dual/quad core processor and using turbo boost. Intel HD3000 play nfs carbon low settings got a bit lag while ATI HD5470 play highest settings of nfs carbon is smooth...
*
Contradicting? Processor is high-end dual/quad core processor and using turbo boost but play nfs carbon at low settings? laugh.gif
Anyway, CPU and differences in CPU (at least for SB) have little effect on gaming performances: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Intel-...ce.49600.0.html

Yeah, we know ATI HD5470 is better than Intel HD3000....
ATI HD5470 > Intel HD3000 >= Nvidia G310M

The processor is i5-2410M<no high-end...graphics card is GT540M~thank for the Optimus it use HD3000 for old game =.="
*
I thought we're talking about how you think Nvidia G310M is better than Intel HD3000? hmm.gif
Anyway, the Intel HD3000 of the i5-2410M and i7-2630Qm has the same clock laugh.gif
More info here: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Intel-...on.43710.0.html
Imho, its not easy to gauge the relative performance of the Intel HD3000 against the Nvidia G310m since these 2 are of different generations... and its not easy to do benchmarks without the need to take into account the performance differences caused by the different CPU...

It's saddening too how Intel's HD 3000 is required minimum to run Portal 2. Still though, I doubt that Intel HD3000 is as bad as it sounds to be, have to test yourself to know laugh.gif
By the way, N43 models are out in Malaysia right? Which is?
*
Well, all new SB laptops now will at least have Intel HD3000 or even better dedicated GPUs... its good to see such a huge leap in terms of CPU/GPU nod.gif
Huh? Intel HD3000 was never bad to start with... many were surprised at what it can do when it was 1st launched haha laugh.gif

No N43 at all in the latest brochure... not even N43Sl.... guess it ain't coming after all sad.gif
