In terms of heat output the Velociraptor will pawn the SSD..who needs a room heater when you have the Velociraptor In short SSD > HDD

The Velociraptor isn't that hot. But yeah, with the upcoming Vertex 3, a single Vertex 3 will outperform two Velociraptors in RAID-0 on every single factor (sequential, random, access time), except capacity.

It depends what you want. If you need lots of read (like our home PC's) then SSD's would fit best. If you're running a server that needs a lot of writing then Raptors would be better. There's no perfect things in this world There's always pros/cons so ask yourself what you want.

Lots of writes? Shouldn't that still be in an SSD's domain? If it is about the write life span, that shouldn't be a concern, unless your server sees more than 50GB of writes a day.

There are plenty of articles and tests in google. Here is one of them: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=204748Most SSD's in the consumer market is MLC based and if you're running on RAID, you don't have TRIM. It makes a difference after a while.

That article was from more than two years ago. There have been great strides in SSD performance since then. As for RAID, there is the option of buying Kingston's V+100.

Enterprise servers with a lot of read and write will be using the more expensive SLC memory that has greater durability.. For consumer I don't think you will be sane enough to max out 50GB/day..

QUOTE(clawhammer @ Mar 12 2011, 12:15 AM) Have you tried using VelociRaptors in RAID as compared with SSD RAID? I haven't, not in a position to be able to afford such a test. Still, what are you basing your opinion on? The Velociraptors loses out on access time, random and sequential speeds. How can it be better for enterprise needs? Also, enterprise needs vary from application to application. Some applications are mostly reads and rarely does any writing. And I wouldn't be surprised if this active and massive forum could happily live on MLC-grade SSDs. It takes a lot to hit 10GB of daily writes and Intel's SSDs are rated for 100+GB writes/day.

The only thing the raptor wins would be the capacity.
Other than that SSD will pwn all...

if velo raid 0 vs ssd single. There is a chance for velo to win i think. I think rather than buying velo, why not straight buy SSD. 10k rpm only
