I saw a video with HammerFall and the Swedish female "i think it's ice hockey" team. Darn hilarious. And the team actually won first place! Go HammerFall!!!

I just couldn't accept Nightwish.... dunno why. They sound too boring for me.

Give me Obituary, Slayer, Iced Earth.... anytime
*
I had the same feeling when I listened to Nightwish. Too pop'ish imo. As a power metal group, they're not as 'heavy' as Blind Guardian or Iced Earth. For speed, they're no where close to Dragonforce. And in the symphonic metal category, I think Kamelot or Rhapsody are better than Nightwish.

I'm still trying to get used to Nightwish (finally bought Once after a buddy of mine streamed 10th Man Standing to me) but it's hard to accept them when bands like Ensiferum, Therion, Queenscryche and Savage Circus are taking my most of my music time lately biggrin.gif

Fans of Nightwish should give Blind Guardian's "A Night At The Opera" or Kamelot's "The Black Halo" a try.

Oh yeah, Iced Earth rulez!

I bought Obituary's frozen in time. Ppl call it Death metal. But I used to download songs from Nile and Cannibal Corpse..those guy sing like cookie monster, but Obituary sounds less brutal. Whats the diff between those bands? Even tho theyre still in the same genre. Sorry newb question hehe
*
Well, death metal songs usually have some theme/narrative (usually death/gloom related, but not too depressing or it'll become doom metal), heavy riffing and the death grunt/growl. The 'cookie monster' sound is the death grunt or growl common in the genre. Some bands do it heavily, some not so.

Agreed.

Too bad Matt Barlow won't be rejoining Iced Earth, sigh. Tim Owen is okay, but I want Barlow on the Something Wicked This Way Comes sequel coming out (rumored to be) later this year.

The only songs I think Owen is on par with Barlow are the Gettysburg trilogy. The Devil To Pay just kicks metal ass.

EDIT: Oddly, the best song I think Jon ever wrote was 'Blood On My Hands'...a Demons & Wizards release. So many Iced Earth fans bashed me for saying this XP

O noes...I'm addicted to Nightwish's Ghost Love Score! I guess the Once CD I bought awhile ago is now finally worth the purchase.

@Abangpedro: I love The Dark Saga too! The Hunter is my fav song from that album! But as an overall package, I think Something Wicked This Way Comes and Night Of The Stormrider is better imo. Dunno why...

I think i mention this band before they play Folk/Polka Metal
I might give Finntroll a try. Do you think they're suitable for an Ensiferum fan like me? biggrin.gif

@euronymous - I don't know all the bands either, but I got to know them from chats with Yanks and Aussies. Lots of crazy stuff you can learn from other people that aren't into Hitz.fm and MTV.

I have a question for those that used Demonzend. How long does it take for your order to arrive?

Is there really no one into symphonic metal or gothic metal ? I'm started to listen doom metal, any band recommend ??
*
I do listen to symphonic metal (Nightwish, Therion, Kamelot, Rhapsody to name a few) and Goth metal (Lacuna Coil). But I still prefer power/epic metal songs like those from Blind Guardian or Virgin Steele compared to pure symphonic because they're faster and more 'trashy'. Oh yeah, if you're into symphonic metal, give the Trans Siberian Ochestra a try. Interesting stuff imo.

As for Doom metal, the only band that I listen to is Cathedral. But only casually since I'm not a big fan of the genre.

Sooo...anyone here getting Iron Maiden's new A Matter of Life and Death album? I just got it and honestly, it is way better than Dance of Death, their previous album. More progressive with a hint of Deep Purple-esque/DT styles in it. If you guys hated the singles:-

Reincarnation of Benjamine Breeg
Brighter Than a Thousand Suns

... don't let them stop you from purchasing the album! I don't know why IM picked those songs as their singles, but the other tunes are far better! Tracks worth listening (IMHO) are:

The Pilgrim (definately my favourite here)
These Colours Don't Run
The Longest Day
The Legacy (very Blind Guardian-esque with its lead and rhythem guitars)
For the Greater Good of God (this might get the album banned in malaysia though I hope not!)

Not that the others are bad but Lord of Light sounds too much like Lord of the Flies from X Factor (Which I don't like) and Out of the Shadows reminds me of Bruce's own Tears of the Dragon. Still, I'd give it a 9.5/10. Definately worth getting!

And if you guys are preordering it from Amazon or Demonzend and want to add more albums to make it worth, check out Blind Guardian's A Twist In The Myth or Insomnium's Above The Weeping World. They're not out yet but I got the chance to listen to them early *hint hint* biggrin.gif

can someone recommend for me a melodic death metal band beside Kalmah, Dark Tranquility and Shades of Dusk?

just want to add in my collection.

Insomnium. Get their 2nd album, it's better than the first and 3rd imo. And try Norther.

If you get Ensiferum, definately grab Wintersun's debut album. They're have the same lead singer. Though I didn't recommend it at first because Ensiferum is more of death/folk metal hybird while Wintersun is closer to melodic black metal than death metal.

My personal recommendation is to get Ensiferum's Iron album first. Listen to Mourning Heart followed by Tale of Revenge. It's just awesome. And Iron has one of the best album intros (Ferrum Aeternum) I've heard in a long time.

Oh yeah, give Children of Bodom a try too.

are therion and tristania in a same genre? i find them really soothing. and i like rhapsody and moonspell too, anymore bands like that? happy happy bands. not so heavy or depressing.
*
If you want not so depressing bands, definately check out Blind Guardian. They sing about literature mostly (ala Iron Maiden) but with a hint of trash metal mixed with power metal. If you wish to try out some songs, get Battlefield (from A Night At the Opera), Curse of the Feanor/Time Stands Still (Nightfall In Middle Earth) or Bright Eyes/Another Holy War (Imaginations From The Other Side - best album from them). They have a new album too, A Twist In The Myth, but I'm not sure how you can get them in Malaysia other than through Amazon or Demonzend.

Personally, I don't like Rhapsody too 'cause they're too cheesy imo. Other bands worth listening if you're into literature/fantasy themed metal music are Iced Earth, ManowaR, Hammerfall, Iron Maiden (duh), and Tyr/Einherjer.

I think Disturbed is nu metal.

EDIT: I based that on the fact that they sound too much like Linkin Park and Thousand Foot Krutch, two other nu metal bands biggrin.gif

Amen. Get Rock in Rio too if you like BNW and aMoLaD. Sign of the Cross (best Iron Maiden song ever IMO) and The Clansman sound so much better with Bruce on the vocals and 3 guitars riffing together. Bayley makes the songs sound like 'nak mati onli', hehe.

QUOTE
There is no such thing as NU METAL. There's nothing METAL in bands like Disturbed and its sickening ilk. Just because the vocalist has a throaty voice doesn't mean he's a metal vocalist. Just because there's a guitarist, bassist and drummer doesn't make them METAL.

A simple yet powerful example of what IS metal: Iron Maiden.

Nu Metal is just metal in namesake. There's nothing 'metal' about nu metal due to its simple riffs, more reliance on electronics and less than stellar guitar duo/solos.

Oh yeah, lately I've been listening less death/power metal and a tad bit more classic stuff. Someone introduced me to Manilla Road's Astronomica and Necropolis and now I'm hooked. But I can't find any of their albums anywhere, either in shops, amazon or thru 'other means' sad.gif

I saw some posts about Elvenking on the Blind Guardian forums. Some people like it, some people don't. They're like Rhapsody, I think.

Listening to Virgin Steele's Visions of Eden before sleep:)

EDIT: Correction, Rhapsody OF FIRE

If clothing symbolizes true metal, everyone would be wearing leather and praising Valhalla. Don't fret if you don't get the reference:P

Most metal arists don't wear all black actually, only death metal and black do that. Just look at sabbath, maiden, the 4 big ones, priest and many more. Btw, I wear cargo pants and tee shirts all the time.

EDIT: It's quite hard to tell a metalhead from his (or her!) looks, really:) I have known decent looking girls that enjoy bands like Rammstein, Motorhead and even *gasp* Dragonforce.
