I have a colleague who keeps on telling me that his PS3 can play very nice BD PQ.

He even asked me to get 1, even though I am not a gamer.

How good is PS3 compared to Sigma based Media Streamers like HDI Dune and Popcorn Hour in terms of PQ on Plasma & LCD?

The differences between the PS3 and the Dune shd be minimal. Both output in YCbCr 4:4:4 and both are more or less neutral to begin with. No artificial sharpening and no major issues with both. The one thing to remember though is the PS3 until recently was defaulting to Deep Colour on, now there is an option to switch it off.

Sigma Designs chipset is as neutral as it gets. I believe Dune has fixed the colour space decoding error that was inherent in the Sigma chipset when files were not flagged for HD. WDTV also issued a firmware fix for that when Sigma released SDK 2.0. I am not sure of the other streamers that use Sigma but the solution to that problem was provided by Sigma themselves.

Please pardon my ignorance, but why is it bad to use Deep Colour?

bro,

the WDTV firmware fix u are referring to is which one? the latest one?

i'm using the WDLXTV, the one that has autoframe rate detection. Does this have colour space problem?

Just checked Popcorn Hour's website.

Found the update for my A-200 (Feb 2010).

Firmware Version: 02-02-100208-19-POP-411
"- Patch Colorspace algorithm (for file playback only)"
