Not all Starcraft II players have their own fixed line (i.e. land connection) for their internet.
The most probable ppl would be those living in hostels or dorm colleges.

Here I am, trying to disseminate all my accumulated experience(s) while using all available wireless broadband packages that were offered to us by ISPs all around Malaysia (those that I able to lay my hands on). do note that these experiences can be influenced by many internal & external factors, so I'll do my best to differentiate them as I go along with sharing these valuable knowledge to you guys.

as a general rule:
QUOTE
1. Only load Sc2 if the results from the PingTest.net to KL server shows B-grade ping quality.
2. Peak hours would be from 6PM-1AM GMT+8 weekdays. 12PM-2AM GMT+8 weekends.
3. Non-peak hours would be from 2AM-5PM GMT+8 weekdays. 3AM-11AM GMT+8 weekends.
4. Graphic details are turned to all Medium settings, running at 1280*720 resolutions.
5. Only connected to SEA region (I'm still using prepaid time-card for SC2,so no NA access for me)

here are my findings:

Celcom Broadband (3GB/mth postpaid)

a.is unplayable at all during peak hours. you will experience very frequent disconnections. lags will occur if got more than 60+ units with moderate explosions (as in team battles). ping would spike to 200-300ms without warning. minimum ping i can achieve is at 150ms.

b.is playable at non-peak hours. disconnects would rarely occur, but intense micro situation may be a bit hampered.lags generally wouldn't occur in single player, but may rarely occur in team battles. ping would spike to 150-200ms. minimum ping is at 115ms.

Maxis Broadband (rm25/week with 2GB & rm58/month with 1.5GB; prepaid)

a.is playable on both peak & non-peak hours.sudden disconnections would still occur if there are overwhelming number of users using the service simultaneously.ping generally hover at 110-170ms (peak) and 68-115ms (non-peak). spikes may happen where ping would shoot up to 1060ms shocking.gif

Maxis Broadband (3GB/mth postpaid)

a.is playable on both peak & non-peak hours.generally more users would subscribe to this package, which would mean sudden rise of users during peak hours. sudden rise=sudden spike in ping. I've barely got enough time to use this package, but ping is nice during non-peak hours. I can get minimum of 60ms during that time.

U-Mobile (U68 5GB/mth prepaid)

a.unplayable at all! generous bandwidth allowance brings many heavy downloaders & torrenters to use this service (in my area at least). ping hovers at 200-280ms at ALL times.

Digi Internet (Discovery 3GB/mth postpaid)

a.playable, if only the signal didn't fluctuate a lot (as my place is on top of hill and just barely outside the coverage area sweat.gif ) pingtest shows 100-110ms.

Celcom Broadband RM98/mth -testimonial by quest_5692-
actually acceptable to play.but a bit lagging when downloading new patches/maps/viewing other peoples' profile page

iZZinet 4G wireless 1Mb unlimited -testimonial by hazairi-
speed and latency was superb when it's still available, but with dwindling services from the ISP, had to abandon.

in the near future, i'll be testing P1 WiMaX and Yes. in the meantime, any SC2 players that would like to contribute to this thread, please do so! thumbup.gif

im using the rm98 celcom broadband and its actually acceptable at SEA server....even when internet is slow, starcraft 2 doesnt lag. just seemed that starcraft doesnt require good internet speed?

well,at my area, there are lots of college users. these users would, in their own volition, go youtube/download/etc. in turn, hogs the available bandwidth for this area down by a lot. i actually cant connect to my office VPN until non-peak hours.

& i do agree that blazing internet speed is not the crucial factor. it's the ping factor. the internet speed is required for downloading new maps/patches/viewing other profiles...

btw, thanks for your input quest! i'll append them later thumbup.gif

Using iZZinet before and the speed and latency was superb provided that the base station at my area doesn't go down. Disconnection is very rare.

oh i see...so,it's safe to assume that iZZinet isn't a viable option for broadband anymore. unless of course, there are signs of revival from them (new stakeholder perhaps?)

i'll update the 1st post later then. thanks for the input!

Added on March 3, 2011, 6:53 pmi'll be testing P1 WiMaX later.just subscribed,so hopefully i can commit a few days' worth of testing, especially during peak hours...right now,the results from pingtest.net shows B-grade quality of 60-80ms, quite similar to maxis...

playing the game won't eat up too much bandwidth...at worst,10-15 games would only cost u 10-15mb...but this is for the actual playing...but if u r downloading new maps/patches/replays...that's another thing altogether...

the keynote to use wireless broadband for any multiplayer games (sc2 included) would be decent ping attainable...
i've played Heroes of Newerth b4,180ms is the absolute limit...for sc2,150ms is the absolute limit...
more than that,u will lag a lot...jerky screen, unable to micro properly etc...
