just create a new file named profile in ur system\bin
*
Not sure if that is enough. At the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=977154 he gave
CODE

$ su
su
# remount rw
Remounting /system (/dev/stl9) in read/write mode
# touch /system/bin/profile
# chmod 644 /system/bin/profile
#

The "profile" file is given 644 permission. When I look up what it is http://www.zzee.com/solutions/unix-permissions.shtml#numeric , It gives:
owner: read and write permissions,
group: only read permissions,
others: only read permissions.

That will prevent others from overwriting that file.

p/s use r/w in root explorer. Or if you don't have one, use this to make /system writable.
CODE

# mount -o remount,rw -t rfs /dev/block/stl9 /system

speedmod kernel is time-tested and reliable. One of the better ones. As you read more in xda-developers, you can try other kernels.

hope final release of gingerbread rom have better power management. my fren on htc desire said his battery improve a lot with gingerbread.

this thread is nais, frenli and veri fas one. i can see that TS has already provide information (at page one) in less technical style, as not everyone here has the gift to understand every bits n bytes as in xda-dev forum.

how about another section for accessories (e.g.: battery, pouch, etc)

sekadar cadangan.

- I am trying to be as less technical as possible wink.gif If there's anything a user don't understand, can search and then ask question here. (I should add that in first page!)
- I have no idea about accessories. PM me and I'll add in the first page.

QUOTE(mengsuan @ Mar 4 2011, 06:48 PM)
The GPS issue has never been explicitly addressed by Samsung. Samsung never admitted any problem with GPS for our international GT-i9000 anyway.

GPS is temperamental, it usually works but at times, it just didn't work ideally. When it doesn't work ideally, the accuracy is fairly poor, causing navigation system to drift to nearby roads.

An app called "GPS aids" which should assist the GPS getting location fix, does help my device a lot. I don't have to wait at roadside for GPS fix anymore.
*
Good answer. I might want to add that the post-October patch do not have the hardware gps problem. Also, 2.2.1 update improves GPS accuracy a lot. So updating to that firmware (such as JS5) will help.

-meebo
-eBuddy
-nimbuzz

single protocol
-yahoo messenger - nice can video call.

*
Many benchmark softwares aren't optimized for the hummingbird chip used in our galaxy s. Thus, the score doesn't really measure the speed of your phone. Many of us do not care about how many quadrant points we get as long as we get a smooth and speedy phone.

As you have flashed speedmod kernel, have you enabled all recommended tweaks in recovery mode?

My phone takes forever to get a GPS-fix? Is there a solution to this problem?
There are a few workarounds
- Download fasterfix app. Copy it to your sdcard, open with MyFiles and click to install.
- Use GPS aids
- Update/flash your ROM to the latest froyo (2.2.1)
- Hardware fix - This will void your warranty.

If you are rooted, you can flash alternative modems found in here. Download one, put it in your sdcard, go to recovery mode and select the zip file to install.

For additional modem:
- XXJVE modem. The latest modem taken fron the leaked gingerbread firmware
- ZSJPG modem. From Hong Kong firmware. Thanks to coD33 for the link.

Used Heimdall, installed the replaced drivers. Heimdall just froze there without any progress for 20secs. Start button is unpressed, I clicked Start again and it says device unrecognized.

No progress bar on the Download mode, hence no flashing is done, the negotiation part is stuck I think.
*
I think your best bet is to ask in the forum. Hope you don't get corrupted bootloader.

nola, dun dare to do the hardware fix....

my batt date : 2010-10-18
*
Then I assume you have installed and used both fasterfix and gps aids, as well as updating to 2.2.1 based roms like darkyy or sweethoney rom.

I noticed a big difference when changing modem. Unfortunately, no single modem is the best for everyone because the performance seems to vary according to operator, location, phone, other factors.

For example, JPY and JPM modem were really bad. JPP was a lot better. ZSJPE seems to have more accurate GPS tracking than JPP. I'm in another country so my result may not be applicable to you.

My advice in to download all of the modems found in the first page and store in sdcard. Then you can go to recovery mode to flash one of it and test the gps outdoor. Try with XXJVE first as I've been hearing about its good performance. Flashing these modems are not invasive, no data loss so no harm trying.

All the best!

*
You didn't actually experienced battery drain. Let me explain. When Your phone is charged to 100%, your phone automatically disconnects itslef fom power source and uses the nattery. This prevents overcharge, to protect and prolong battery life. However, the indicator still shows 100% when actually battery has been used and is now down to 96%. This is a feature introduced by samsung.

Ic. But I remembered using stock browser from 2.2.1 that limits to 4 tabs only. That's supposed to be hardware accelerated. Maybe I was wrong.

Since the second post is still confusing, this is my attempt at a more complete guide for newbies. A pictorial diagram should be more easy to understand. Please comment and msg me for any mistake.

I have a question. If from stock 2.2 froyo is it compulsory to use odin as recommended by hardcore? Or just use CWM? (of course must rename speedmod kernel zip file to update.zip since that's the limitation of 3e recovery)

user posted image

1.
What to do before Flashing
Remember that flashing is a dangerous process, be it official means using kies, odin or CWM. It is preferable to use a laptop to prevent soft brick in case of a sudden power cut during flashing. Make sure your phone is fully charges too.

1. Make sure you have 3 button combo working (download and recovery mode). If it isn't, go here for the fix.

2. backup /efs folder. This is to preserve your IMEI number.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

3. Backup
- Phonebook & email: Sync with google.
- apps and data: can use Titanium Backup
- SMS and MMS: can use SMS Backup+ by Jan Berkel

2.
Go to recovery mode. How?
1. Shutdown your phone.
2. Hold volume up, home and power button simultaneously until the screen lit up.
3. Wait till you arrive to the recovery mode.

You'll see whether you have 2e or 3e mode at the top.

4.
- Flashing speedmod kernel will give you 2e recovery mode.
- Follow this link for instruction to install speedmod kernel.

3.
- Go to the sweethoney rom page
- Download either wipe or non-wipe version and store it into your sdcard
- Go to recovery mode. Choose "install zip file from sdcard" and "choose zip from sdcard". Navigate using volume rocker to your file. Use back button to select.
- Confirm the selection.
- Wait for a few minutes and you'll automatically reboot.
- Done. Enjoy your new custom rom!

is it necessary to put Sweethoney rom? I mean.. replace it as custom rom instead. Or u just wanna give an example? if that's the case, then it's fine smile.gif

Added on March 8, 2011, 11:37 amUPDATE: Doc have just released a new base rom JS7, claims to be the fastest rom released by Samsung so far hmm.gif
*
I straight away direct a user to a particular rom to make it more straightforward for newbies smile.gif This guide is aimed at newbies. Seasoned (read: Obsessive Compulsive Flashing Disorder) people have no need of this guide.

If darkyy, got a few problems like battery drain. Not a good impression to newbies.
If doc's, a newbie can be confused with which one they should choose.
If rom like sweethoney or ultimate, just download one file and flash by CWM. I chose sweethoney because that's what I use. It's fast and beautiful.

If there's better rom than sweethoney, I'll use it in the guide.

QUOTE(neo0915 @ Mar 8 2011, 09:27 AM)
I will flash to Simply tonight based on ur guide here, so i will feedback about the guide as this is my 1st flashing (sure a lot of doubts).
1 more thing, which flashing method is more safe or recommended ? Odin or CWM method ?
I flashed to speedmod via Odin actually, but the Simply thread show guide flash via CWM method~
Mayb u can add a section like preparation before flashing, for example, for user that flashed to speedmod kernel, it is advisable to disable the lagfix fist bla bla bla~

So far, the diagram is very clear and simple to newbie like me~
I know i need to proceed to step 3.0 as i already flashed to speedmod kernel through this diagram~
*
Yup, cwm is more recommended. Even if flashing fails, nothing harm will happen. Odin is way more complicated with questions like pit file, pda, csc, phone, usb drives, etc. IMO, not newbie friendly.

I had speedmod with ext4 lagfix and all tweaks enabled. Can just flash over. No need to disable them because rom makers are now smart. They have scripts included to detect of they are enabled and act accordingly.

QUOTE(stormlcc @ Mar 8 2011, 09:33 AM)
great suggestion about the cwm and odin flashing, i haven't seen any of the recovery modes on sgs yet, so sometimes reading stuff online will surely make me blur, there are so much stuff that needs to be processed and not a complete (standard) guide on everything in one page including rooting, going into download mode (i have no idea what this is, because I use / mod HTC only, everything is different in here), flashing stuff and so on.
*
I know, doing it in galaxy s is a bit different. Even I had difficulties in rooting an HTC tattoo. Hopefully a diagram will give an overall picture and give better understanding.

QUOTE(lch78 @ Mar 8 2011, 10:33 AM)

Thank you for reminding that, surely beats command kung-fu to make /system folder read/write. FYI, can use rootexplorer app (paid app) also. Just one button click only.

After i press Enter, nothing happen, is it normal ? Did i enable the read&write feature ?
Den i open the efs folder, it shows empty~
I need to copy out this folder to backup my IMEI ?

That command is to make /system writable. You looked the wrong section to backup /efs folder.

An easier way to backup is to use sgs tool for one click efs folder backup. The app will store the backed up /efs folder inside sgstools folder in your internal sdcard
