A good one will lay the tiles properly with consistent gap. My house tiles pop up after few years because got hole/gap below the tiles. So have to redo the whole room.

So have to redo the whole room. The issue of tiles popping up after several years is quite common. There are many theories behind this and one of the main reasons is the tiles are laid together too closely at a gap of 1mm or less. It is recommended to have at least 2mm of gap between the tiles, or 3mm. Due to the properties of teh tiles, sometimes the tiles may contract and expand with heat, and if the gap is too little, the tiles will push against each other which cause some of the portion to pop up. |

Well, actually for my case the gap is ~1-2mm on 1x1 tiles. I can hear emptiness below the tiles when I step on it so I don't think my case is the gap issue. But what you said is true, though. |

But what you said is true, though. The hollow sound when you knock on the tiles ie. "emptiness below tiles" is because the tiler uses very little cement to bond the tiles to the ground, either to save cost or to finish the tiling works quickly. |

QUOTE(Life_House @ Feb 28 2011, 02:03 PM) not necessarily the contractor overcharge ... 'koz if they're contractor of good workmanship, they would use enough material to make sure the job is done properly and the outcome meet or above client's expectation .. agreed, but the problem is you never know until the job is done. my tiles said bla bla bla asking for higher price but the outcome disappointing. |
