It's just the carbon. You can use newspaper to wipe your lens anyway. It's practically the same thing on the lenspen.

There is some smell on it especially the cover. Smell like some black ink but it actually just some carbon.
I sometimes just use the newspaper to wipe my filter, it works just as well as lenspen.
