ROOT GUIDE FOR XPERIA PRO (MK16i) (Unlocking Bootloader Required)
- compiled by siuyi - tested and certified usable on a THORUS set.

1) Download this zip (xperia-pro-root-recovery.zip - 11MB):

http://www.mediafire.com/?vp2zw9wmzh2wbx0

2) Extract the zip to desktop and name it 'xroot'.

3) Open the folder and copy the file 'RootXperia.zip' to your phone's SD card, create a folder named 'downloads' and paste it there.

4) Download this Stock-based kernel (boot.zip)(Rooted with CWM Recovery + Handy Shortcut during Startup):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment...85&d=1321907423
source: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357026

5) Extract the boot.zip, and copy boot.img into the 'xroot' folder on desktop.

------------------------------------

++ To unlock bootloader, refer the link below:

http://unlockbootloader.sonyericsson.com/

i) read the important information by SE and click 'start unlocking the bootloader' button at below.

ii) stop at step 7 by copying down the code and direct jump to step 11 (unlock button for MK16i is MENU button).

iii) for step 13, If Windows asks you to install the drivers, install the driver from the folder “Fastboot Driver” in the folder you downloaded in (1).

iv) for step 14, open command prompt and change the directory by keying in 'cd C:\Documents and Settings\[your pc name]\Desktop\xroot' . After that, refer step 15 and 16.

Done. bootloader unlocked.

------------------------------------

WARNING!! YOUR XPERIA PRO WILL BE FLASHED THOROUGHLY LIKE A NEW UNIT ONCE ROOTED. BACKUP ALL INFO FROM YOUR UNIT INTO YOUR SDCARD OR PC TO AVOID UNWANTED CASES!!

------------------------------------

4) Put the phone into fastboot mode:

i) Power off the phone and make sure it’s not plugged into anything.

ii) Hold down the MENU button and connect the USB cable. A blue light will appear at the notification led.
**If a blue light does NOT appear, then your phone can't get into FastBoot, and probably still has the bootloader locked. You can also try a different USB port on the computer, and even a different USB cable.

5) Double click the dos batch file 'Root-Xperia-PRO.bat' in the 'xroot' folder on your desktop.

6) A dos window will open temporarily for a few seconds, and close. you might not even see it it's so fast. Wait for around 3-5 seconds.

7) Look at your phone's screen. You should have an orange colored recovery menu, which is the CWM-based Recovery v4.0.1.4 application running.
**Slide open the keyboard: The up and down buttons move the selection up and down. the Enter button selects something. the BACK button goes back.

8) Select 'install zip from sdcard' > 'choose a zip drom sdcard' > 'downloads' > 'RootXperia.zip' > 'Yes - Install RootXperia.zip'

9) Wait the flashing to complete, go back to the main screen, select 'wipe data/factory reset' and 'wipe cache partition', in 'advanced', select 'wipe Dalvik Cache' and 'wipe battery stats' , and return to main menu, select 'reboot system now'.

Done, your Xperia Pro had been rooted. Mind that the restart will take longer than normal.

10) Enter to fastboot mode again, refer (4). Then reopen command prompt setting like what you did in 'unlock bootloader (iv).

11) Type in 'fastboot flash boot boot.img' after the command. Your unit will come to an orange background which is the CWM-based recovery mode. Reboot the system.

Your unit is now with recovery shortcut during startup, by pressing the 'Volume Down' button once when the static Sony Ericsson white wordings become brighter.

Add-ons (siuyi haven't tried anything from this point onwards)

1- Upon unlocking bootloader and rooting your MK16i, if you tend to update your unit via pc companion under 'Support Zone' (also known as FOTA Update, Firmware over the air update), our update will be denied OR you WILL brick your phone. If you happen to brick your phone, do not worry and refer below.

REPAIR it due to FOTA Brick or ENABLE FOTA update, read the link below:

Enable FOTA update for UNLOCKED bootloaders WITHOUT brick (recommended)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1385725

and if the above doesn't work, try the method below:

Fix FOTA bricked (unlocked bootloader) Phones
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1126358

2- To relock your phone's bootloader, read the link below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1324703

and with video guide: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVIUNXNbZhU

****Credits goes to rcummings100 and Bin4ry from XDA Developers Forum, FreeXperia for the CWM recovery image, and jeopardise from Lowyat.net for the heartful guidance.****

disclaimer : siuyi holds no responsible on your unit. Be a man, do the right thing. If you bricked your phone, refer 'Add-on (1)' to solve the problem. Unlocking bootloader voids warranty? Then refer 'Add-on (2) to revert back before you send off for warranty claims. There might be wrong info in the guide above as well.

---------------------------------

If you do not plan to unlock your bootloader, you can try to root your unit using the below method:

[Daily Update]Root / Unroot Sony Ericsson Xperia 2011 v1.5 without unlock bootloader

*Note that some upgrades which requires rootings requires bootloaders to be unlocked as well. So it is your choice to choose between unlock or not for the bootloader.

Accessibilities - For Neo/Arc no need widget to enable/disable BT/Wifi. Just slide statusbar and press shortcut you want. There's reboot option too with recovery! Using widget for shortcut just waste of RAM. <-----uih? HOW??

I know this is stupid question,
but is a PRO question for me ==

"Does tis means i can't update next time with SONY PC Companion?"
If answer is YES, then where n how i update next time?
Bcoz now in my mind, i just want ROOT my phone,
dun want ROM.

SiuYi, dun mad on me~ i still a NOOB. cry.gif

(yesterday i read a book in Kinokuniya about Android phone, I understand a bit of ROOT n ROM, bcoz i try understand it with Xbox mod thing (JTAG n FBT). So i understand a bit)
*
answering you this question now.

if u plan to root xperia PRO, currently there is no evidence saying u can root it without using installing a rooted ROM yet.
for example: Super-One-Click roots ur unit without installing a ROM. it just root ur unit and that's all. but that doesn't give you a recovery application along in ur unit.

regarding, if you root ur phone u canot update it nextime with pc companion. this statement is not valid at all.

the reason is because if u root ur phone, the meaning behind this action is that u are no longer satisfied with the current firmware/stock rom and wish to get more than that from it by rooting it. so in my guide, i provide 2 options of root rom which is a) FreeXperia.zip and boot.zip [one got shortcut button, while the other no, but both using stock-based kernel], & b) cm7 kernel [custom kernel which u will definite WOW if u installed it and venture].

if u install cm7 kernel, it comes with 2.3.7 instead of the stock firmware which is 2.3.4. so it is 0.0.3 higher than ur stock. but SE released news that they will no longer go for an upgrade in gingerbread 2.3, instead to start off with icecream sandwich 4.0 in 2012. so if u happen to need 4.0 in future, u will just however revert the firmware to stock kernel with the method i provide u in the guide and upgrade it forward to 4.0 using pc companion.

so, answering "u only wanna root ur phone". then just install "FreeXperia.zip" or "boot.zip". both using stock-based kernel. it will be 100% same like stock firmware. smile.gif

well, that is also a made-easy 'one-click' root method derived from zergrush. no harm trying then report back here though, but i see there will be no RECOVERY application attached along, so u need to install it after that~ hmm.gif

bro, can do me a favor?

can u help me check ur PRO's build number?

Settings > About Phone, then scroll down to the last.
is it 4.0.2.A.0.58 or 4.0.2.A.0.42 ?

also, i did some readings. to avoid bricking PRO during automatic update via FOTA (firmware on the air) using pc companion, u can refer to http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...post&p=47912565 under Add-on (2). I made some changes on that already and will try it out by tonight.

shortcut during startup to recovery mode. u tried with cm? before? now no more? i plan to use cm7 ler.

from my POV and readings, i found out "PRO is near similar to NEO and ARC, in the same category with other Xperia 2011". if kernel or widget is suitable for NEO and ARC, it might work 90% on PRO, if it suits PLAY/ACTIVE/RAY or MINI PRO, then it might work 45%.

just my estimations.

I haven't tried CM yet. I am quite happy with stock SE rom. If not mistaken there still under development, such as HDMI doesn't work.

Now with stock Gingerbread 2.3, I can enter recovery with shortcut key when booting.

like tat i dun wanna go for cm7 1st. PRO got stock rom with recovery + shortcut. but unfortunately the 1 i flash in is without shortcut. so now im thinking of flashing it to the 1 with shortcut. hmm.gif

Post #711 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1364509

Why recovery so important to you  hmm.gif

Once I rooted,
-I optimize the apps - remove dublicates in /data/apps to /system/apps
-remove junks/wallpapers/widgets/services that i didn't use
-mod the status bar/battery/power menu
-v6 supercharger HARD TO KILL! (I bet you'll love how responsive ur Pro upon installing this)

After all that, I still have almost 250MB free space with apps from market that i need. After games, still have 200MB free. (I play SFIV, Real Racing 2, Angry Birds, AirAttack and Genesis emulator only)

320MB of RAM quite limited. I hate when my game FC  hmm.gif
*
i'm addicted with stuff introduced by dev team. so i need recovery to revert back to the original state without reflashing it and reinstalling apps again and again. the power of nandroid is very essential for android modders. one day if u install something fucuk, the unit hangs..by that time u will fucuk the whole world and reflash it again..with recovery, nothing is within the problem~

recovery for me is very very essential. nandroid recovery is mostly recommended. i think CWM comes with nandroid recovery.

and, wth is v6 supercharger HARD TO KILL?

Neo got their own subforum in xda, unlike pro. i feel so strange to venture in neo subforum and read like im using a neo...LOL doh.gif laugh.gif
