Problem is, they've been trying to fix it for how long now? Let's look at Symbian^3, for example. The ability to put out HDMI signal was introduced in Symbian^3. But why on earth are you introducing a feature thats not going to be on all phone, at the expense of a UI that will be on all phones? The UI? That one we fix later, but HDMI out so cool, that one we do first.

That's what you get on the supposed 'engineering culture Finns'. Add more feature, and hey, if its rough around the edges, we don't care, because we are engineers. Selling it is not our job, it's the marketing people's job. So what you have is more feature that's practically useless because you can't use it properly. And if the marketers try to tell the engineers what to do? Simple. they just protest and stage a walkout.

Love it or hate it, Microsoft was exactly in the same boat with Windows Mobile 6, where they knew the whole thing wasn't built for finger touch use. They admit it, they were frank about it, and they acknowledged it, and they made the brave decision to reboot the whole thing, start afresh with the whole touch paradigm thing. What they have, as you say, a friendly UI. That's the first step. All the others you can add to a strong UI base. It's what Google did with Android and what Apple did with iOS.

Should you try and add a UI to a base OS that was design with the old move key touch thing, you get for example Windows Mobile 6.5. Symbian 5th Edition.

The sad thing is this, if this was acknowledged earlier by Nokia, that they don't actually have an OS for finger use, they could have do what Microsoft did and build one from scratch, and introduced it at the same time as Windows Mobile 7. That would have been the end of Microsoft, but what was the brass there doing? That's right, our Symbian is still the best OS for mobile there is.
