CNY is around the corner and thieves will take this opportunity to break into houses when there are nobody at home.

I heard Locks like Solex with big square hole could be easily opened with allen keys.

So, any good brands or criteria that we should look for when we are buying locks?

Install a good alarm system. It would serve as a deterrent. I just use normal locks. No matter how good a lock is, they can easily cut it with tools.

actually any lock will do, i dont think our their or robber so "hi-tech" have to open the lock with their own tools.... usually they will cut the lock of forcely open the door... u can buy a metal cover for addtitional protection which to cover the top part of lock to prevent cut at least...

unless u can change all the door to "safety door" with super touch metal with digital lock that may prevent the break in at least...

for me, alarm & cctv system may useless for me too...
alarm system, i will whack whole main system to stop the siren...
cctv system, i will wear mask to cover my face instead...

alarm - they'll cut the wire (cutting the wire by unprofessional thief will trigger the alarm)
lock - they'll break the lock
cctv - they'll wear a mask/cut the wire

If you listen to all comments like these, you'll go nowhere biggrin.gif
so, use as many protection/deterrent as you can with the best quality you can afford..

lock : From my readings, yale is very good but very expensive..
alarm : It's good if you can afford to install alarm that comes with
monitoring service like ADT etc.
cctv : good for deterrent or for police investigation.
other options - security guard, dog

Yeap yale is a good brand for locks, so is Tesa and Schlager. If its for your main door, better choose a good lock. Not for thief deterrent but so that your lock won't fail you at the wrong time.

The best security is still a combination of locks + alert & helpful neighbours...

i had once been adv by locksmith that it is better to buy those u-shape type of locks. u open the lock by pulling the lock shaft horizontally. get a good one.
the trick to this lock is to buy the gap width as small as possible to fit your lock holder so that there is very less free play. this way it is harder for the robbers to cut your lock....of course they can always cut your lock holder....ha ha no 100%

if they have been targeting the unit, there's no way to stop them except for the easiness to break in.

Having few level of security actually lengthen their time to break in. Hence, they might reconsider that unit.

Common sense will tell that a home with locks, alarms and dogs will have less break-in compared to the home with just a single lock.
