I further add that the "true market value" derived from the popular used car portal is very conservative since it is "not yet negotiated asking price of sellers". Effectively I am saying that buying motor insurance based on the official motor insurance guides is akin to paying inflated premium prices.

Yes but if insurance companies use ISM ABI to determine car values, then you're quite safe. When i checked the value of my car earlier, Allianz quoted me RM 130,000 while the link i provided which referenced ISM ABI valued it at only RM 100,000 which is the correct market value for my car. So far i know that Zurich Insurance uses ISM ABI.

Thanks for the link. It only goes to reinforce what I have originally concluded. ISM provided a market value of Rm33,100. Popular used car portal "car list.com.my" produced a computed average market value from 12 cars of same model and year (2004 Honda City i-DSI) at Rm29,600. Now what then is the true market value? Should we rely on expert opinion from ISM or on what is transacting in the real market place, notwithstanding that this is in fact the prior negotiated asking price of the sellers? Indeed the real market price could be much less. Could all this be the collaboration of experts and insurance companies making a quick kill on the innocent customer or the result of a careless expert?
