Not sure about Minolta. But Sony 1.8 was known to have more focus performance than canon and nikkor models and better build quality...therefore the minolta is believe is used? better get the new Sony

popfish: better, surely the sal50 F1.8. the KM50F1.7 is just 'beneficial or smarter' choice if u ever plan to go FF. but the SAL50F1.8 has more beautiful color and get sharps really quick at F2. but even if u ever wanted to go FF, u probably will upgrade to a SAL50F1.4 anyway when the times come. so just get the 50F1.8.

It's quite simple really. If you are planning to go FF pretty soon then the 50mm f1.7 can be a very good budget lens that operates fine on both APS-C and FF bodies. It's built like a tank and thus will last until you have saved enough to replace it.

If you're not really aiming for FF then the 50mm f1.8 is the choice as it has newer coatings and better bokeh and fits the APS-C bodies. You'll get warranty too if you buy new.

Picture quality is about the same if you're not into pixel peeping or too particular in getting 'Minolta' colours.

i dun defend the 50mm f1.7... *kysham throw his 50mm f1.7 into the sea*

popfish, yea, sadly, owner of 50F1.7 will raise their arms and shield to defend that lens

serious, just get that 50F1.8, the lens has nicer bokeh too. anytime u can sell it without much loses, and buy the 50F1.4 when u really really going to FF.

the SAM will make huge diff if u upgrade to A55/66/77 in the future.

better get f1.8 now,IF and only IF u upgrade to ff then sell it and buy f1.7

one thing you have to note is, for the 50mm f1.8, there will be at least 90% chance you will getting a mint copy.

that can't be said the same for the minolta 50mm f1.7 though............................
