Dear All,
I'm moving back to Malaysia after staying overseas for over 5 years. And during those years I have had my own weights. Since it's a hassle to move all back to Malaysia, I would like to ask fellow LYN members about who, where and how do I get hold of gym stuff for relatively cheap price. Thank you.

Yours sincerely,
ennyong1985

Most stores have pretty hiked up prices when it comes to weights and stuff. Best bang for buck IMO would be to look for second hand plates and visit a metal work shop and get them to construct a power cage for you. I think the dimensions for the cage can be found online.

The fitness centre will charged you alot for their items and equipments. If you don't mind, try buying second hand plates and the rest. They are much cheaper that way.

RM190 for 10kg adjustable dumbbell is quite expensive mate. I know in malaysia not many have dumbbells but in UK I bought 38kgs adjustable dumbbells for £25. Cast iron as well. So I'm hoping to get around that range. Nevertheless, thank your reply. Much appreciated.

sigh, been wanting to build my own gym, but its really too darn expensive. even for a basic bench + barbell + weights would mean i have to use them for 2 years before i break even with the cost of paying for a gym membership. and frankly i don't think its worth it since i wont have access to the other equipments a proper gym has to offer

Dear Mikehuan,
You should include the cost of parking and petrol cost then you would realize that the break even point would be even earlier. If within 18 months, I think is a good investment.

parking = rm1 per visit.
distance, approx 3 mins by car.

imo, these would come to maybe RM100 in a year? misc spendings dude.

I agree that buying second hand or used weight plates is the cheapest and practical way to go. If you do decide that, consider these tips when buying used weight plates. So what if they're dirty and rusty, you could easily clean and refinish rusted plates.
Good luck in your search.

Maybe it wouldn't break even, but yeah, I'd still chalk that up as one of many reasons for training at home.
