I just flashed to the latest miui,  will stick to this till gingerbread for nexus is released...  what can i say is the latest miui pretty fast compare to previous,  disable the quality graphic in the launcher setting really make lotsa improvement and smooth scrolling.

err, you mean the Sense launcher?
if yes then that means you didn't flash the rom.
by right you should see MIUI launcher/home screen.
unless you mean the HTC splash screen?
the steps are simple (that is if you already know how to flash a ROM).
first you need to root your phone if you haven't,
then create an ext3 partition (assuming that ext partition is not yet created),
flash the ROM like you're flashing any other ROM,
done.

have you calibrated your battery?
if you haven't then refer to here
and try installing juice defender,
disable 3G/Wifi connection and syncing when unneeded,
lower down screen display brightness?

if you have rooted your phone,
you can also install setcpu to control the behavior of the processor,
to lower down the speed when unneeded, this will help save battery too.

Huaaaa.... ... My Desire got stolen at Low Yat 2 days ago... Just put it down to pay for a casing and next minute it wasnt there...
It was just beside me but there was too many people coz of the holiday... gf wont let me buy another Desire coz we still have a couple of phones with us... Now gotta figure out how to get another Desire... Really pissed off with the incident but cannot blame anybody for my carelessness... 

I hope I am still welcomed here even though I now am "Desireless"... but I promise you guys I will figure out something and get another soon...
