QUOTE(ascend @ Jul 27 2011, 01:07 PM) ck77, the short answer is this. can you define `workmanship?' (saved for precious metal of course?). In what way is ORIS `workmanship' better than Rolex? Would love to hear your personal experience on this. Dont own a Oris but i always liked the LE Swiss Hunter. When i compared the 'workmanship' of ORIS to a Rolex, saved for the precious metals, i find ORIS to be similar or better. And ORIS are cheaper by at least 10G (needless to say, these two brands are not in the same league). Hence, i personally think it's worth its weight in gold. It's an expression! and I've been very happy with Big Crown and Artelier since i bought them some years ago. Added on July 27, 2011, 1:10 pm A trusted seller on Ebay (Time_Paradise, Singapore) sells some models of Hamilton. i am currently bitten by a Rolex bug.....i've always thought those who wear Rolex are just rich people flaunting their wealth, etc, etc. But i've come to learn how wrong i was. There are a lot of Rolex owners out there who told me, there's a lot of horological value in owning a rolex- the movement, history, and especially the quality. Meaning people who pay for a Rolex not because of recognition or insecurity but because they have came to realize the quality this brand brings. Now this is important to me because 1 Rolex = few Oris/Ball/Seiko/even preowned Omega pieces. So I am still learning, what extra do i get from having a Rolex... So it will be refreshing for me to learn/hear opinion about Oris having same level of workmanship with Rolex. This post has been edited by nando: Jul 27 2011, 02:40 PM |

QUOTE(ascend @ Jul 27 2011, 04:17 PM) The finish, fit and mould quality of the fold-over bucket on a Rolex that i saw was less than exemplary. Of course this doesn't mean all Rolexes are made that way. you mean you saw an inferior buckle on ONE piece of Rolex? That's it? That's the comparison of Oris vs Rolex workmanship you mentioned earlier?316L grade stainless steelĀ is used exclusively on ORIS timepieces. There is a quantum leap in 904L costs relative to 316L. QUOTE(ascend @ Jul 27 2011, 09:16 PM) you look just fine in your confused state. Suits you perfectly. Don't ever change it. when you state earlier that `316L grade stainless steel is used exclusively on ORIS timepieces' you're implying 316L is only used in ORIS. exclusively - referring to the fact that ORIS only uses 316L - and not what you refer to. that's why few forummers here are politely trying to correct you....be it with kind words or with cute smileys.. I am still interested to learn more about your elaboration of Oris workmanship equal or better than Rolex...any particular Oris , Rolex model you're comparing to? |

Thanks for all the links though. Will check it out so can buy with more confidence...especially first time buyers who dont have much confidence is buying preowned or online.... good luck on ur hunt and dont forget to share photos... |

QUOTE(CHiNO730 @ Aug 1 2011, 05:20 PM) kotmj, you must be incredibly successful to not only afford, but be around long enough to learn to appreciate such nice things. Interesting comment CHiNo... you have an impressive knowledge of kitchenware - you must be an excellent chef (or at least appear to beĀ back on topic - Rolex is too mainstream to get a head to turn.Ā That's why I wear a Panerai, because these days it's nearly instantly recognisable by those who have a mild interest in luxury and finer things, but not so much that the everyman (or woman) would know what it is.Ā There are unfortunate trade-offs which I'm willing to live with.Ā The other brand which might give you some credibility but not necessarily cater to the everyman is IWC.Ā You can have a Portuguese Chrono for less than a Daytona. When you start to seriously consider it, you will see a world beyond Rolex, Omega, and Tag.Ā I wouldn't buy any brand that manufacturers more than 100k watches a year unless it's a Seiko, or a gift for someone else. There is, of course, nothing wrong with these brands - but for the money, there are recognisable classics that don't scream "mass produced." I was on hunt for Panerai too...never really bothered to look into Rolex as I've always labeled the brand as a `loud' watch that is primarily purchased by people seeking attention and recognition. and yet...few months ago, I asked myself..`okay...what's the big deal about a rolex'...and started reading, asking questions, looking at the real thing...and the outcome? I found out that for every 2-3 person that wears a gold-plated diamond decorated Rolex to gain attention, there is a normal street person who dilligently saved $$ for many months, just to get a pre-owned no -nonsense no-date classic Submariner. Working class people who fell in love with a Rolex...an Explorer, a Sub, a Pepsi, even the Date-just... Why? i was curious..and i kept on reading and asking more questions... In a nutshell, i found out that the design, the innovation, the quality, the history.......there is such a powerful force to own a Rolex......and this force is present in many of these watch lovers.......those who wear watches with an appreciation of history, movement, pricing, etc.... not just a lover of luxury.... now i am hooked...and saving for my first Rolex...definitely not a brand new, but a preowned.... I am no Rolex expert or historian, but i do know i should own one, to continue my hobby..! and CK 77..i blame you for playing a part in getting me hooked! No offense to IWC or Panerai....wouldnt mind owning one in future..... I actually considered a 000 or the Pilot Chrono..but now, its taken over by a Rolex... I was surprised by my U turn....but that's what so nice about this hobby...it never fail to surprise you.... I am now telling myself, do not attempt to educate myself about Grand Seikos or the Spring Drives...hahaha! This post has been edited by nando: Aug 1 2011, 07:03 PM |

A perfect collection is when the owner have spent time to understand the background of the watch he's buying and most important of all, the pieces bring pride and joy to him.
At risk of attracting criticisms, even a box full of different series of F1 Tags or other F1 themed pieces can be considered his own perfect collection, if the owner loves every piece and have come a long way to make this the chosen theme of his collection, then its a perfect collection to him... but gotta admit..those PAMS in the box look delicious... well, since we into drooling into other people's collection......here's one place..... take out the tissues... http://forums.watchuseek.com/f381/hi-ends-...ead-352840.html This post has been edited by nando: Aug 5 2011, 03:57 PM |

Its Friday afternoon, so maybe i am allowed the leisure of day dreaming...
if I have endless supply of cash....i think the theme of my collection will be complications......JLC, Pateks, IWCs...busy dials, the more complicated the better.....moon, PRD, perpetual, date, chrono, 2nd time, etc, etc, etc.. i sometimes wonder..if one of them malfunction, how much will the trip to AD for repair will cost... QUOTE(Chinoz @ Aug 5 2011, 04:47 PM) Nando, you better have a large enough winder to keep them all running. I'd hate to have to re-set a perpetual calendar or a moonphase heh. yep, i was give same advice many times...re-setting a moon phase can be a nuisance...although i find it hard to believe especially if you're doing in on an iconic piece... Added on August 5, 2011, 11:44 pm QUOTE(kotmj @ Aug 5 2011, 11:37 PM) I was but I am always aiming for aspirational stuff before ending up buying down to earth stuff. yeah, many may buy Rolex because they assume them to be a symbol of luxury and even elevation in status..BTW Rolex projects success, not luxury. Rolex is a tool watch. Luxury would be stuff like VC, PP, etc. but decades of development has gone into the household names of Rolex watches we hear today...Sub, GMT, these watches were designed to be supremely rugged, stylish and yet practical, elegant time pieces that ignites the passion of countless watch lovers who truly understand and appreciate what Rolex is... somehow, along the way, the brand became sought after by pimps, rappers and over-night millionaires..... that's the enigma of owning a Rolex i guess.....the pain of seeing the price increase 2x a year, the association of the brand with old uncles and status symbols...and yet, wear a Rolex in front of true watch lovers...and they will tell you why the brand is so loved...
