Thinking of selling my A42Je after it back from RMA to buy smaller & longer battery life laptop/subnotebook. These are my criteria:

1. Brand: Any brand
2. Budget; under RM2k, cheaper the better
3. Specs: Non glossy body and if possible the screen as well so it won't be easily scratched. Cool surface. It doesn't need to be powerful, as long as it cool and long battery life. Decent onboard speaker would be great (such as Acer Dolby speaker)
4. Size: under 14" would be great.

Thinking of buying Thinkpad Edge 11 but would like any other suggestion as well.

After using backup laptop it looks like even C2D 1.5GHz with Intel X3100 could handle old games that I enjoyed the most (UT2004, RA2, CnC Renegade, GTA SA and VC) so I thinking ditching dedicated card for longer battery life and lower heat

Think the Edge 11 the best one with anti-glare screen since the other option is Vostro V130 but much smaller battery...
*

Is there any other laptop within the price category? I don't mind glossy screen, the most important thing is I don't want glossy body. Thinking of getting the Acer Aspire 522 or HP dm1z but where to buy them and how much?

Acer 1830TZ? But edge 11 still have better CPU..
AO522 is RM1299..
Don't think the new DM1z is available...
on the more expensive side, RM2200, there's Acer Travelmate 8172..
*
Thanks for recommendation, 1830 is hard to get, if RM2.2k I would better buy 3820TG with HD5650 tongue.gif Just looking for something cheap with usable battery life

If A42Je could switch to its Intel HD I would expect better battery life and lower heat

Yea I see one for 2.1k on Garage Sales. Tempted, but we'll see how much would this A42Je fetch for 2nd hand. Maybe not much with newer ASUS laptop comes with slightly better HD6470 sweat.gif

How much better is the speaker compared to A42JP speaker? icon_question.gif

A42J speaker is awful, anything would be an upgrade from this speaker

Just wondering, is there any other manufacturer like ACER that have speaker on top instead of bottom of the laptop? I found it annoying when put it on different surfaces it made different sound. Worse if put on carpeted or on the bed doh.gif

Other criteria is the same as previous post:

1. Brand: Any brand
2. Budget; under RM2k, cheaper the better
3. Specs: Non glossy body (matte screen is a plus). long battery life (5 hours+) but no Atom please
4. Size: from 10-14"

Thanks lee, have checked it out at Garage Sales, looks fine to me. Glossy screen would be OK because I'm indoor all the time, only some time where some light could annoy when working outdoors. Forgot to mention, I would like a cool surface, both top and bottom.

Temped by Toshiba NB550D, but I don't think it come to Malaysia anyway

It's worse for the laptop actually. No heat dissipation.
*
You don't have to tell me the obvious. I still put it on a cooler pad but still with the speaker pointing downward it reflect nearly no sound at all

Nah its OK. I guess there is compromise, there isn't a perfect laptop in the first place. I just need to select which compromise I should have

Agreed, nothing is perfect hehe  laugh.gif
I guess you've already considered/rejected the idea of using external speakers?  hmm.gif
Toshiba's C640 models are non-glossy iinm, but battery life is nothing to shout about  sweat.gif
*

Its bloody inconvenient, because I don't put it on table top or someplace solid, it usually on my lap or on my bed. I just need a good speakers, like the Acer I mentioned, their speaker sounds very good to me, there is a hint of bass to it as well, and there is none on ASUS so-called Altec speakers.

Toshiba C640 looks plasticky and horrid, feels terrible as well, big no for me

Mind asking y is ur A42Je in RMA process?
What's wrong with it?
*
In my particular laptop for some unknown reason it won't go to 2D speed when in Maximum Performance mode, emailing ASUS technical service end up bickering and finger pointing at me instead of just fixing the damn BIOS

Apart from that there's nothing wrong with it. My friend bought the same laptop as me, roughly on the same date and still working fine till this day. I haven't checked whether it exhibit same behavior or not. But I will sell this laptop once I get it. No longer interest to do heavy gaming anymore biggrin.gif

Huh, what u mean by 2D speed in maximum performance mode?
sweat.gif
Don't really know about tech stuff.biggrin.gif
How much can it fetch if u're selling? Since it is repaired once?
hmm.gif
*
Mean it won't reduce its speed and voltage if I set maximum performance mode in Catalyst Control Center. Its not really that hot though because it still low end GPU, I just love to annoy ASUS to fix it, but it seems like they aren't as keen of fixing problem as past few years.

I dunno, I don't mind if I sell it cheap like RM1.2k-1.3k with 3GB RAM. Its only less than two month old. I don't really wanted to do gaming anymore, just browsing and video watching apart from doing powerpoint and word assignments so integrated graphics will do fine. Aiming for in range of 10"-11" AMD Fusion subnotebook or ULV range would do fine as well. something cool enough to put on my lap smile.gif

hahaha bro u also turn old not do gaming

more than happy with my lenovo z460 i5 intel gc than asus hd5470 gc, longer battery life and less heat
*
Well not really, laptop that meant for gaming is usually well above my reach, for student with no loan its very hard to get such laptop. Desktop for similar price is much better for gaming biggrin.gif Not much games really entertain me to play anymore, too much 'console-ism' so games become simplistic and boring. The only new games I play frequently is GTA IV and its Episodes so no laptop under RM2k would play it nicely sweat.gif

Oh, it's a wise decision to quitting games so can concentrate on work and studies. smile.gif
Good luck in selling your laptop then. biggrin.gif

Thanks bro, assuming ASUS done it quickly, I hope I will get it next week

GTA IV requires at least HD 5650 or HD 6550 to get it playable, anything below that is crippling at barely playable framerate unless you really tweak the hell out of it or you just play it at low detail. Worse, it requires quads to really makes it playable. For that budget forget about any decent gaming. GTA San Andreas and older would run great though

I would guess its similar with A42J with low end AMD graphics, so no switchable graphics

mean time latest plans are the G700 mouse and a some 2.1 or maybe 5.1 speakers... worth getting those cheap 5.1? or get better 2.1?
*
Although its OT but I'd take a better 2.1 system than cheap 5.1. I take quality than quantity any day

Still don't buy anything? Just buy it already. There is 5750 thread in Specific Discussion subforum, along with unboxing and pics of the laptop. Don't be lazy to look around
