QUOTE(advocado @ Feb 4 2011, 08:13 PM) I'm looking for a Laptop price around rm1.8k to rm2.3k. Can someone recommend a good buy for new models? Can't get Quad processor with this budget...Require: 15" & above DVD-RW drive ATI or NVidia graphic card. 2-4gb ram Quad processor no need newest 64bit windows hdmi output. I can accept dell, acer or other reputable brand. If you can fork out RM27xx, can get Acer 5750G |

Is there any big difference with the i3 & i5 chipset for an extra rm100? Is the acer better deal as it has better Ati?
Actually what laptop comes with quad processors? |

That Acer 5750G is using Quad processor...
Core i5 has turbo boost while Core i3 don't have... The Acer is using nVidia and it comes with nVidia Optimus, switchable GPU and it comes with better CPU but no bluetooth.. Acer 5750G, Lenovo Y560P, HP DV6, Toshiba A665, AlienWare M17x R3 with the latest Quad, but currently being recalled by manufacturer for the faulty chipset... Older gen i7 Quad, there's Acer 5745G, Acer 5942G, Acer 5943G, Asus A42Ja, Asus X42Jr, Asus N82Jq, etc.. Cheapest Quad for now should be Asus X42Jr, around RM2599.. Actually the Turbo Boost, is it like Overclocking? But at manufacturer's setting?
What is switchable GPU? Switch from nVidia to? So better not get the latest processor due to Intel design flaw? What about Dell 15R i5 is this chipset affected by the latest i5 & i7 problem? Is rm100 worth the jump from i3 to i5? And is rm2xx worth the jump from 15R to 5750G? 5750G spec pretty high but risk of uncertainty... Yup, built-in auto overclocking,
Switch between integrated GPU and dedicated GPU, save power when not needed.. Well, if you did buy, most likely need to return to the manufacturer for mobo swap, but still depends on manufacturer decisions.... 15R not affected... Not really, if you need the extra speed, then yes.. Yup, you get a better CPU, GPU, battery life as well, just worse customer service, compared to Dell's onsite service.. |

Ok, seems i3 is a better buy since most of the time i would be pushing the GPU to it's limits way before the processor reach anywhere close to it's peak. Too bad no rm100 rebate now...
Compare to Dell XPS 15 which is even slightly more expensive than 5750G yet much lower spec, Acer is definately a good buy, but preharps rm400 can be put to other better use, considering the new i7 has alot of uncertainties. Well. XPS 15 were scheduled with SandyBridge at around March, while the current XPS 15 were released last year compared to Acer 5750G that recently released...
What other uncertainties except the chipset problem ? |

Well the chipset alone is a problem, for like 5750G etc. We'll never know whether they get the problematic chipsets & whether if replaced the problem will be solved? Though i'm not sure how the problem effects the laptop.
Can help out abit defining the weakest to strongest GPU for ATI & Nvidia? Can easily tell the two brands with the GPU model number but comparing ATI & Nvidia equivalent is not easy for me. XPS 16 clearance is rm2999, is it much inferior than 5750G? QUOTE(lee_what2004 @ Feb 4 2011, 09:00 PM) |

Intel already found the fix, just that it will need to do mobo swap since the problem is on hardware level...
HD6570 GDDR5 > GT540M > HD6570M GDDR3 > HD5730 >= GT435M > HD6550M > HD5650 > GT425M > GT420M>> HD5470 > 310M Well, you get weaker CPU, GPU, but better screen and FullHD... HD5730 won't really run well at 1080p... |

How does the faulty chip affect the laptop? Hang/overheat etc?
Thanks for the ratings, if 5730 can't handle 1080p well, GT420M would be much worse seeing it's slower than a HD5650. So if going for high performance 5750G is the best option in terms of price & performance. An extra rm400 from 15R i3 to 5750G resulting a big jump in performance is still tempting though. Wonder if current Acers already have the fix? QUOTE(lee_what2004 @ Feb 4 2011, 09:10 PM) Intel already found the fix, just that it will need to do mobo swap since the problem is on hardware level... He meant it won't handle well to game at 1080p resolutions... 1080p movies all those GPU can run just fine...Thanks for the ratings, if 5730 can't handle 1080p well, GT420M would be much worse seeing it's slower than a HD5650. It will affect the SATA2 port number 2 and more, resulting dead, but unknown deadline..
While the normal SandyBridge should be using the SATA3 port 0 or 1 for the HDD, should have no problem... The problem rest on Optical Drive, eSATA, etc they are utilizing the rest port.. read more here.. http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1739169 |

For now, no Asus with i7 and 15'' under that budget...
Your best bet is Acer 5750G, 15.6'', i7 2630QM + nVidia GT540M@RM2899... And yes, i7 and 15.6'' consume more power if compared to i5 and smaller screen... |
