I finished Gothic 4.

Gothic series isn't crap, it's just buggy.

Don't just throw accusation just because we are able to buy cheap games.
If a game is buggy, i think that's a pretty good reason to say it's crap or otherwise not worth getting. The gothic games have previously been on sale and I've deliberated on getting them but I was put off by the reviews saying that it's buggy.

I think it's a fair comment that a lot of people buy games for "a rainy day" just because it's cheap. I know I have done it (many times) before with the result that I still have a lot of untouched games in my Steam account that I just don't have the time to play (and that i probably never will).

FYI you can get get really cheap deals on consoles btw. Just picked up some older titles brand new for <RM50 from GH a few weeks ago not to mention weekly sales on my 360.

Stop mooching off your friend's Xbox 360, that is also a form of piracy.

Would you buy Arkham Asylum for RM119 while Steam have it for RM30 after a year?
*
Arkham City will be a day 1 purchase for me because i really enjoyed the 1st one. Screw waiting a year for it to go on sale.

Anyway steam sales! Batman GOTY for US7.50 is an awesome buy. If you don't have it! GETTIT!

Anyway, to our regular forumers, if you're really that keen on looking up promotions, I suggest using the Great Game Promo thread instead where it's nice and clean and free of opinions.

yes telaxeh is doing a great job there. It's one of the more useful threads except when people are offering up their own opinions that they're passing because they already bought it or summat.

Incidentally, I'm now facing a moral dilemma because when i came home from work yesterday, my wife was drumming away on my copy of rock band 3 on the xbox with her own gamertag. I'm not sure if I should turn her in to Bill Gates or not. sweat.gif

Singleplayer games ie. RPGs and what not.

I don't see how it is not piracy for singleplayer games to be played by several people and by using one license only.
*
You've clearly been brainwashed into thinking of games as a service rather than a product. This is a new thing.

In the old days, me and a bunch of friends would huddle around an 8086 trying to guess the answers for the adult check to leisure suit larry 1. Which was a single player game. edit: the floppies they came on were pirated though. That's a different story altogether.

Incidentally solitaire is a single player game (the hint is in the name of the game itself).

guys.1 quick & nooby question.
i bought the Batman Arkham Asylum GOTY,but it's a hassle to download thru steam, since i got limited bandwidth, and i was reserving it for the Portal 2 download.

so,can I use any ISO, & link them to the CD key i purchased thru steam? if yes, how to do so? thanks in advance smile.gif
*
Try this, install from iso, make a copy of the game dir, uninstall, download about 1% steam till all the files have been populated, then copy over the steam populated files with your copy of the game directory, verify the game files through the steam client and hopefully steam will make whatever corrections it needs to the files and you should have a perfectly legal copy. At least that's how i have done it in the past.

Alright, based on this understanding, why could this serve as a reason as to why Valve are withholding sales figures?

I'm not being snarky here... I am just curious now.
*
I think you hit the nail on the head the first time out - that there's no point in them disclosing numbers. It has absolutely nothing to do with taxes. When they make their filings domestically, their returns will contain that information. Based on their turnover and revenue, I'd say that they would probably have to do full segment reporting for both geographic and product segments. However, this information would probably not be very useful to the industry press and fanbois alike. (<---ex chartered accountant here).

it just sounds fishy too me.
from what i know, Distributers usually reveal info on total sales, so developers know how well are they doing on that platform, and they could cross check if the sales, tally with the revenue they recieved from the distributer.
*
That's why the original "non-news" article which started this anyway just states that valve is not providing data to a so called video games chart. The publisher knows exactly how much he is earning from steam, he just doesn't know how much everyone else is earning. Basically because it's none of his business.

If you really wanted to know how DD was doing compared to retail, then you would have to aggregate all the individual publisher's accounts which i'm sure (if they were listed) would contain a breakdown of sales from DD/retail.

Still no weekly charts though.

well i do understand the circumstances companies needs to protect themselves. But as a developer, could u trust all your distributer data?
*
Yes you could, such companies normally have controls in place to assess the completeness, accuracy and valuation of the data. One control that we have seen is where steam has run out of keys especially during a sale.

By that logic, do you think developers get sales numbers from traditional retailers directly? TSB doesn't publish numbers at all even.
*
Ahh but when we're talking about traditional brick and mortar and physical products, the control is actually in the publisher keeper records of how much stock they have sent out, received, cash received etc, ie physical controls.

With DD its intangibles so there needs to be something worked out between steam and the developer/publisher.

Probably only way to find out is to submit your own game for steam certification.
