Xavi..Heart of Barca ( UCL Semi Finalist ) Heart of Spain ( World Cup )

actually my personal favourite will be Sneijder

It should be Sneijder,Milito or Villa in top 3 but Xavi might won it because he deserve to win Ballon D'or compare to the other two.

Iniesta is a diver. Besides he's injured like half of last season ? The rest of the time he's done faking an injury.

Now that i got that thing off my chest, my vote shall go to Xavi. nod.gif

the only reason Iniesta on the list is because his world champions`s goal, even im Barca fan but i think Wesley deserved to get his spot in the list after his superb performance with Inter and Holland

Iniesta is class, dont get me wrong but like many pointed out he was out injured for a long time and only starts to gather his form back recently, scoring in the WC final does help. Whereas Messi is well....Messi. what more can you say? dribble past players like i did against 10 year olds, his shoot on goal cant be saved by keeper. BUT! this is World Cup year and his performance during WC is still below par by his own standard.

So my vote goes to Xavi, not only does he work the midfield for Spain and Barca, he does it behind-the-scenes ish. Simple and nice, nothing fancy but success rate is extremely high.

Barcelona along with AC Milan (1989 - Marco Van Basten, Franco Baresi & Frank Rijkaard) are the only two teams with all 3 players in the Ballon D'Or First, Second and Third nominations.

Apart from Juventus whom has 9 Ballon D'Or winners, Barcelona has the second most winners of the Ballon D'Or with 7. smile.gif

As for this year's Ballon D'Or, I hope Xavi wins it tongue.gif

i understand that you think its unfair that sneijder is not in there and i, as a barca fan too agree with you on this, but to the extent of accusing iniesta as a diver thats going a lil bit too far isn't it?

Maybe for you its far, but its around that normal range to me. You haven't seen me going about Iniesta have you ? laugh.gif
He's a diver. I reserve judgement to any other guys out there but i'll stand by my 'accusation'.
And for you and me especially, i would like this thread to be a clean one.

I also feel that Sneijder should have been among top 3, instead of Iniesta.

But yeah, that is what you get after your team play ultra defensive tactics in big games. The UCL Final had even seen Bayern holding possesion for nearly 70%. IINM even when against Chelsea, I think Chelsea conquered the encounter too right?

Yeah ultra defensive tactic can you give trophies, but it won't get people remember you. How many people remember Helenio Herrera's catennacio, despite winning European titles and Intercontinental Cups in 2 consecutive seasons? How many times it was being hyped in the media? All we read were the legendary Hungarian NT, Basten's Milan team, and to some extent, Johan Cruyff's Barca Dream Team.

In the WC, Sneijder was not alone in driving the Dutch forward, don't ever ever underestimate Robben's influence. He was brilliant too. So by saying Sneijder carried the Dutch team is rather exaggerated.

For the vote, I think Xavi is the worthy winner, no matter who is the opponents in the final 3 stage.

And to Faris, I would encourage you to create the Manager award thread instead. Y'know as this guy said:

Do not want to comment too much of this time's contestant. Messi should have it, his flop in world cup is a consequence of Maradona's funny diamond midfield and no fault of his (though his poor form against Nigeria is in question).

yes.. as long as Europe is the axis of world football.. that will always be the norm..

chances are, Arg n Bra players who performed at the World Cup already playing in Europe..

If an Argentinian won the clausura, the cup, the libertadores and the World Club Cup, he still wont be considered for the Ballon D'Or shortlist..

BTW, the original Ballon D'Or was more prestigious than FIFA World Player of the Year because voting were done among the more 'cultured' european journalist instead of football coaches worldwide who tend to swayed towards fan opinion. So the would want to maintain the journalist element which i agrees.

its xavi too, for me. smile.gif

though starting this year both awards has been merged, but by looking at the previous winner,
we know its going to be the worldcup winner who will be awarded. so messi is out. if not, it will serve no justice to ronaldinho in 2006.
IMHO he is shorlisted in the best 3 because he is the holder of the awards.

then we have xavi and iniesta. both are technically great and have their own strength.
but the former is much consistent throughout the whole season, no thanks to iniesta's injury. if he isnt, it will be very close i think, maybe performance in world cup would count hmm.gif (which both did perform well too.. tongue.gif )

And the name of the captain of Comoros is ....."the captain of the antional team"! what a long name... haha

anyway congrats to Messi. The voting is not based on sentiments or based on achievements or trophies. It is based on experience and judgment of 400 odd national coaches and team captains who are probably the best candidates out there to judge the best player, coach, goal etc, because it is them who knows and understands the inside workings of football and knows what it is needed to perform at the highest level consistently etc.

But one thing though, is that only International team coaches get to vote. I would have thought most of the experienced coaches would be club coaches. For example, Fergie dont even get to vote.

Anyway, there is always house rules for different polls / competitions, just have to accept it and move on smile.gif

We are certainly not in the position to question that aren't we? These are top top footballers we are talking about, whose performance get so much coverage in media. Surely all NT captains from all over the world receive enough info to make their own judgment. And they are the professionals as well.

we here in SEA are blessed with wide market for foreign football broadcasting. I dont think they are that easily available in the other smaller nations who's interest in the sport probably not that much..

at most they can probably expect are selected matches in the EPL or in the Champions League. Its very rare to get Seria A broad cast to fully appreciate what sneijder had done to win the treble. Or to get Barcelona's full match week in week out to appreciate why Xavi could be as important as Messi..

if they only served with news clips or highlight, and the hype of written press, i think Messi would definately win it hand down.

Now that we are blessed with wide coverage of foreign football, can we say that Messi is definitely doesn't deserve the award? No matter how you'd want to put it, it will still be a tough call.

Now that Messi has won it, are you implying that he won because of news clips and highlights? Again, its tough to say that, because, again you have no proof that NT captain of some poorer countries receive minimal coverage of other players.

Now please refer to this document, can you say Sneijder receive less nominations from NT captain coming from small countries?

Let me list countries (outside Europe, as the small European countries may also have decent coverage of the major leagues) that have their captains voting Sneijder: Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Azrebaijan, Barbados, Costa Rica, Djibouti, Guatemala, Guinea, Lebanon, Mauritania, Nigeria etc etc.

By medias: Angola, Bostwana, Comoros, Congo, Djibouti, Dominican Republic etc etc.

My point is, it is very ridiculous to say that the reason Sneijder didn't get voted among the top 3 is the lack of media coverage. Just look at the countries that have brought up his name during the voting. I'm sure many of us never even heard of a country named Comoros, and I've googled it, and yes I did find an archipelago named Comoros. The same goes for Xavi and Iniesta. We can't say Messi won because lack of coverage for other Xavi and Iniesta.

My opinion on why Messi won it is purely because Messi's performance inspired more footballers/coaches/journalists than other players. We must remember, this is an individual award. To give the award, one should not look at how many cups the player won, because that is more of a team award. Individual award is different, it is all about the personal achievement of the player. If the player inspires more people than other footballers, he get the individual trophy.

The argument that the award has been spoiled by politics is totally BS, and have no proof at all.

hmmm...those who got to vote are captains and coaches right..of course they got sufficient football broadcasting..they are footballers and involve in football, professionals..if you're saying that those who got to votes didnt receive sufficient coverage, i dont think so, but if the voters are spectators or civilians that have no tv, media or even newspaper get to vote, then you can say about that..but the voters are captains and coaches of FOOTBALL..for example, you might say nigeria, slovakia or gabon as the nations that hv no interest in the sport that much...but the voters are joseph yobo, marek hamsik and daniel cousin..they are professional footballers who get to vote..not murray or nadal get to vote..hmmm

jz my opinion
