AS the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 17 times in their history - 10 times in the last 11 seasons. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup twice, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

QUOTE(zenix @ Nov 24 2009, 09:18 PM)
Hope Alien will sticky this info later.
Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet.

Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers.

Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006)

STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

Hi alien, I uploaded the Scholes Centurion video (a compilation of all 100 goals he scored throughout his career in Man United).

If it's allowed, I thought why not share with other forummers by posting the link in the first few posts. The link is : http://rapidshare.com/files/367460321/PS_Cntrn1x0.rar =)

Edit (08 Nov 2010): Looks like the link is no longer working (thx to sinoffire for notifying) so I reuploaded the video to a new link:

Duo to move for Saints starlet

QUOTE
Skysports.com understands that Manchester United and Liverpool will bid for Southampton starlet Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the next 48 hours.

The 17-year-old Portsmouth-born midfielder is regarded as one of the country's brightest talents having won rave reviews from his 14 starts for the League One outfit.

Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring in Tuesday night's 6-0 thumping of Oldham and he picked the perfect game to shine with United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and Liverpool director of football strategy Damien Comolli watching in the stands.

Ferguson was believed to be at Boundary Park to assess the progress of on-loan keeper Ben Amos, although he was also able to kill two birds with one stone by seeing Oxlade-Chamberlain at first hand.

The two Premier League giants are not the only top-flight clubs keen on securing the starlet's signature, which is expected to cost in the £10million region.

Liverpool see the teenager, dubbed the new 'Theo Walcott', as the perfect support striker for Fernando Torres and they are already building for the future having snapped up exciting talent Raheem Sterling from QPR last year.

Beckham won't face United

QUOTE
Harry Redknapp has confirmed David Beckham will not face his former club Manchester United even if he does sign for Tottenham Hotspur this week.

Beckham is currently training with Spurs as the Premier League title hopefuls try to sign the midfielder on loan from Los Angeles Galaxy.

Spurs want the 35-year-old on a short-term arrangement, but reports suggest MLS club LA Galaxy only want Beckham to spend a few weeks training with Redknapp's side.

A deal could eventually be reached later this week ahead of leaders United's visit to White Hart Lane on Sunday.

However, Redknapp admits Beckham's fitness is not yet up to scratch and he will not pick the ex-England captain to face his old club.

Non-starter

"Manchester United this Sunday would be a non-starter even if he does sign," said Redknapp in The Sun.

"He is not fit to play yet and he knows that. It's going to take him a few weeks to get back to anywhere near the fitness levels he's used to."

Beckham has slotted into training easily with the Spurs squad and Redknapp is keen to have the player's experience at his disposal.

He added: "You cannot beat experience and David has it in bucket loads.

"No matter how well you are playing, when you are going into the second half of the season and have Champions League football as well as the Premier League, it's what you need."

Captain consistent

QUOTE
Five years on from his arrival at Old Trafford, the Serbian centre-back has grown into a key player and leader. In an interview with Inside United, he reflects on half a decade in Red...

Back when you made your debut in January 2006 in the Carling Cup against Blackburn, did you envisage still being here in 2011 as one of the club’s most important players, and even wearing the captain's armband?
I didn’t really think too far ahead to be honest. When I came here I just wanted to play and improve – that was my main target. Everything else has just happened in time. I’m lucky though because I’m surrounded by great players and great coaches and we have great facilities at the club so all that helps you. I’m very proud to have been here for five years although I must say the time has gone very quickly. Someone sent me a photo to sign the other day from when I first joined. My hair was longer and I looked very different. I showed Pat [Evra] – he joined at the same time – and said, ‘Look Pat we’re getting old!’ Thankfully neither of us feels old. It’s just a fantastic club to be part of and as a team we’ve achieved great success in the last five years. I hope there will be more to come in the next five.

Do you have a specific highlight from your time at the club?
There have been a lot. Moscow [when we won the Champions League in 2008] was fantastic and winning the title three years in a row was very special. We play in a very competitive league and you fight for the whole season to win that trophy. It’s a great moment when you are successful.

How have you changed as a player and person since you joined?
As a person… it’s hard to say. I think I’m the same, but you’d be better to ask my family and friends. As a player, obviously I think I had to change in order to adapt to the game over here, but my mentality on the pitch has not changed. I still have the same hunger to play well, to improve and to win trophies as I’ve always had.

How have you managed to maintain such a high level of consistency in your game, season after season?
I think I arrived at the right club at the right time in my career. I was 24 when I signed and I was getting more mature. When you have great players around you who are very professional it helps you develop. I knew I had to adapt to a new club and the game here and I worked hard to improve everything about myself as a player, both physically and technically. I think this club gives you the opportunity to improve yourself more than any other – you have great facilities and the enthusiasm of the manager, the players and coaches. If you combine that with hard work in training you will see your rewards on the pitch.

Have you set yourself any particular aims for the next few years?
Not particularly, as I said I just hope they will be as successful as the last few have. I’m now one of the more experienced players in the team and I enjoy the responsibility that comes with that. I’m still hungry to do well and keep improving and I also want to help the young players improve. The way I play and train should be an example to them. I saw that when I first arrived with the likes of Ryan, Scholesy, Gary, Rio and Edwin and it makes you want to do the same.

On a personal note, how much are you enjoying the role of skipper?
I feel very proud. It came as a bit of a surprise even though I’d played a few games as captain. The manager said to me he wanted someone who would play regularly - Gary, Ryan and Rio had had a few problems with injuries so he wanted someone who would play most games. I know it’s a big honour and I’m enjoying the role. I haven’t changed anything in particular [since becoming captain], but you have to think about your responsibilities – your behaviour, the way you play, the way you train…I know that I need to set a good example on and off the pitch.

Has the armband changed you at all or made you feel any different?
Not really. Obviously you lead the team out and do the coin toss before the game, but in terms of my game I don’t think anything has changed. I’ve always talked a lot on the pitch – you have to be able to communicate as a defender and organise things whether you are captain or not. I tend not to think about it [the captaincy] when I’m playing; I’m just focused on doing my best for the team as I have always done.

When you look at the great characters in the side, this must be an easy side to skipper…
Yes definitely. There are so many leaders in our team – players like Rio, Gary, Giggsy, Scholesy and Edwin set the example. The way they help the other players is fantastic. There are big players for this club and their motivation and hunger is still so strong. They have helped me develop and I want to help the younger players do the same.

You captained Red Star Belgrade and have led your country as well – has that helped you?
I think it’s more to do with your mentality as a player. Throughout my career I’ve always had that winning mentality, it was instilled in me from a young age when I was at Red Star just as it is in players who grow up at United, and it’s helped me a lot. Becoming captain is not something I thought about when I first joined United. When I came here I just wanted to play and improve myself. Everything else – the trophies, personal awards and the captaincy have just happened and I feel very proud about all those things. But as I said the most important thing is having that winning mentality. You have to be focused on doing your best whether you are captain or not – all the players have a responsibility at this club to perform every week to the level the manager, staff and fans expect.

You’ve formed a great understanding with Rio Ferdinand over the last few years – is he the best defensive partner you’ve played alongside in your career?
Yes definitely, although I have to say Mladen Krstajić and I had a great relationship for the Serbian national team. I’m not being disrespectful to the other players I’ve played with, but the results I’ve achieved with those two shows what a good understanding we have and they have both helped me improve as a player.

Loans: Kiko's impact

QUOTE
We keep track of the young Reds out on loan...

Kiko Macheda made his debut for Sampdoria as they ran out 2-1 winners at home to Roma. The United striker came off the bench in the 78th minute with the scores locked at 1-1 and nearly made an instant impact with a header that went narrowly wide. That miss was negated, however, when Macheda played a part in teeing up Stefano Guberti's late winner for the hosts.

Ben Amos also enjoyed a successful debut with League One's Oldham Athletic, keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 victory over Swindon Town. The young stopper was subsequently described by Latics manager Paul Dickov as a "top class keeper."

Mame Biram Diouf played the full game for Blackburn Rovers as they beat Championship high-flyers Queens Park Rangers 1-0 in a closely-fought FA Cup third round tie. Diouf was unlucky not to add to the six goals he’s already scored for Rovers this season when his 18th minute header was superbly saved by QPR keeper Paddy Kenny.

Elsewhere Cameron Stewart played 71 minutes of Hull City’s 3-2 loss at home to Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup and Nicky Ajose played 64 minutes for Bury in their 1-0 defeat away to Accrington in League Two. Danny Drinkwater was an unused sub as Cardiff City earned an FA Cup replay with a 1-1 draw at Stoke.

Danny Welbeck (Sunderland) and Tom Cleverley (Wigan Athletic) didn’t feature in their clubs’ FA Cup fixtures due to injury. Both players are suffering from damaged hamstrings and are expected to be out of action for the rest of the month.

Kuszczak keeps open mind

QUOTE
Tomasz Kuszczak is keeping an open mind as he battles to become the No.1 at Manchester United.

Dutch veteran Edwin van der Sar is set to hang up his gloves at the end of the season and speculation is rife as to his long-term successor.

The Red Devils have already brought in Anders Lindegaard but are also thought to want an established No.1 to replace the veteran.

While Sunderland's Craig Gordon, Manuel Neuer of Schalke, Ajax's Maarten Stekelenburg and Lyon's Hugo Lloris have all been linked with the role, Kuszczak, who is currently enjoying a run in the side in Van der Sar's absence, is keeping an open mind as to Sir Alex Ferguson's intentions.

The Poland international, who joined United in 2006 from West Brom, told the Manchester Evening News: "I know I have not got the biggest name in the world but, and I don't want this to sound arrogant, I think I am good enough.

"I have talked to the boss a few times and he said we will see what happens at the end of the season and I know that in the meantime if I get a chance I have to play well because that is the only way I am going to impress him.

"If the club decide I am not good enough for them then I will have to go somewhere else.

"If Sir Alex Ferguson decides at the end of the season I am not good enough then I will look for another club.

Everything open

"Everything is open now. I am realistic about my situation. It would not frighten me to take over as Edwin's successor. Why should it? I am not new here.

"I have been on the bench because I have been waiting for my chance not because I didn't think I was good enough to be No.1. I have been very patient and I think it is worth waiting for your chance here.

"I think I deserve my chance to spend some time on the pitch because I have been so patient.

"If I play for this club long term then I will be really happy because that has always been my dream.

"I came to Manchester to try to be a top goalkeeper here for many years like my idol Peter Schmeichel."

Kuszczak insists the speculation does not bother him as he focuses on winning the No.1 jersey on a more permanent basis.

He added: "There is a lot of speculation about my position and other goalkeepers that the media say the club are trying to bring in.

Doesn't hurt

"But speculation doesn't hurt me at all. There is competition everywhere in every position at a big club like United. It is normal that new players come in and you have to fight again for your position.

"It is also normal that people speculate about possible newcomers but I am not new here. I am not someone who doesn't know what to do.

"It is not easy to sit on the bench for a long time and then have to go in for two or three important games when everyone expects United to win. It is difficult especially for a goalkeeper.

"But I have done my best. I don't really want to keep calling these chances. I have had a lot of chances. Last year I played 11 in a row and everyone was saying that was my chance.

"I played well but after 11 games I was back on the bench when Edwin was fit and everyone forgot about me."

Trio should return

United are expected to be boosted by the return of three key players for Sunday's trip to Tottenham.

Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic and Edwin van der Sar missed last weekend's FA Cup win over Liverpool, but should be available for the visit to White Hart Lane.

"Wayne and Nemanja have both trained well this week and should be fit for Sunday. Edwin is a little bit behind them, but he should train today and I think he'll be okay," revealed Sir Alex at his pre-match press conference.

Team news

14 January 2011

Harry Redknapp expects Gareth Bale to be fit to face United on Sunday.

The midfielder departed early from the loss at Everton on January 5 with a back problem and was rested for last weekend's FA Cup win against Charlton.

"Gareth has missed a couple of days training but he should be okay," reported Harry on Friday. "We're in good shape. We've pretty much a full squad."

Younes Kaboul is available again after suspension and that leaves long-term injured Ledley King (groin) and Tom Huddlestone (ankle) on the sidelines.

James Returns To United

QUOTE
Posted on: Tue 04 Jan 2011

Preston North End can now confirm that Matty James has officially returned to Manchester United following the completion of all the relevant paperwork.

James, who was on a season long loan with North End, was halfway through his second loan spell with the Lilywhites but has now returned to his parent club.

The midfielder made 30 appearances for North End, scoring three times, with arguably the most memorable goal coming in last season's 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest at Deepdale.

Bale and Rafael square up again

QUOTE
Teams that have had success against Tottenham this season have generally been able to nullify the threat of Gareth Bale and Rafael van der Vaart.

That is no easy feat with even Champions League holders Inter Milan feeling the full force of the pair, who have scored 22 goals between them in all competitions.

But one player who has been credited with curbing Bale's forays down the left, in particular, is Everton full-back Phil Neville.

The 33-year-old's no-nonsense approach helped ensure that David Moyes' team ran out 2-1 winners against Spurs at Goodison Park earlier this month, having already picked up a point at White Hart Lane in October.

Manchester United are Tottenham's opponents on Sunday but even though they possess a right-back who is 13 years Neville's junior, there are increasing signs that the Brazilian Rafael is beginning to show the reasons why Sir Alex Ferguson brought him to the club from Fluminense in 2008.

One thing Neville and Rafael had in common when they came up against Bale this season was limiting their ventures down the flanks to join their respective teams' attacks.

Contrast this with Inter right-back Maicon, who was the first of the three right-backs to face the Welsh winger during 10 days in October.

Even though the Italian team were 4-3 winners at the San Siro, Bale's second-half hat-trick made world football take note because he exposed Maicon's attacking tendencies so clinically.

user posted image

Touches from that game show that the Brazilian defender was far more active in the opposition half compared to Rafael and Neville, who faced Bale three days later at White Hart Lane.

You could argue that the former England defender had the benefit of playing a fatigued Bale so soon after the Champions League game.

But Neville's experience told him that if he remained disciplined, with right midfielder Seamas Coleman tracking back, he could allow Bale to approach him from deeper positions rather than be caught high up the pitch and be beaten for pace on his blind side.

In addition, when Bale received the ball towards the final third Neville was quick to close down space, particularly when the winger had his back to goal, and his success meant that Bale switched to the right flank during the second half of the 1-1 draw.

Rafael took a similar approach during the course of United's 2-0 victory over Spurs at Old Trafford.

One of the 20-year-old's runs led to him shooting wide early on but once United took a 1-0 lead after 31 minutes, he was less adventurous. He was also quick to shadow Bale when Spurs were on the attack so that he was unable to open up a gap to use his explosive pace.

user posted image

With Nani ahead of him it was Darren Fletcher in the centre of United's midfield who helped him out. Yet during his 64 minutes on the field where he marshalled Bale with considerable success, Rafael only made four passes in the opposition half.

And during that time, Bale managed to get past him just twice.

Former Spurs defender Gary Mabbutt believes that Tottenham's superb home form this season means that Ferguson's side will again be cautious this Sunday.

"Spurs have set their stall out this season with a very attacking 4-4-2 formation at home and I'm sure it will be Manchester United who adopt a defensive position and try to hit Spurs on the counter-attack and at set-plays," he told BBC Sport.

"They will try to nullify Bale, Van der Vaart, Roman Pavlyuchenko, Aaron Lennon and Jermain Defoe, who could also play, but one thing that has improved about Harry Redknapp's team this season is that they are getting goals from all over the pitch."

Some of the goals scored by Bale, including his strikes at Inter and Stoke, have lit up Spurs' displays this term.

But the 21-year-old will want to improve on his performance last time against Manchester United, where he gave the ball away in open play more than against any other team Spurs have faced this season.

user posted image

His crossing was poor too. Not one of his seven attempts reached its target and his pass completion rate was just 58%. Even his dribbling was below his usual standard, with a 22% completion rate compared to 67% against Everton.

That may have been down to tiredness but even though the 10-day period might have had a physical impact on Bale, Mabbutt is sure it would have improved his tactical thinking.

"Phil Neville might have played well against him but Bale is learning all the time, so if players try different tactics on him he is bright enough to work out ways to solve those problems," he said.

"Teams have put two players on him but he now realises he can pull out wide and create space for others in the middle such as Van der Vaart. You never stop learning throughout your career and with Bale being so sharp, and having the ability to match, he will continue to grow in stature."

The question is, will Bale have learnt the lessons from Old Trafford in order to make an impact this Sunday? Or has Rafael improved further since they last squared up?

HARRY REDKNAPP reckons Manchester United will run away with the title unless his Tottenham team beat them tomorrow.

Spurs' boss raised the stakes ahead of the mega clash by declaring they have to end Alex Ferguson's unbeaten run to keep the Premier League alive.

Victory for Wayne Rooney and Co at White Hart Lane would put them 11 points clear of the fourth-placed Londoners with a game in hand.

Redknapp said: "It's a game we need to win to close the gap on them. If they beat us they've run away with it really. You're not going to claw back that lead.

"I think all those at the top will be hoping we can pull off the result, close the gap and keep everyone involved.

"If Tottenham want to win the league, we have to beat United.

"They keep winning but haven't hit the heights this season.

"Sooner or later they will hit top form and then everyone will find themselves in trouble.

"But we have no reason to fear anyone."

Redknapp caused a stir in his SunSport column yesterday, when he stated that United are not good enough to stay unbeaten for the entire campaign.

United manager Ferguson hit back, saying: "There will be a blip and how you handle that blip is important.

"Just as long as the blip is not on Sunday, if you can tell Harry that!"

Now that he got the taste of Champions League, Spurs will need to make sure they will be there consistently by be in top 4 or else its just a matter of time before the bid from the top European clubs come knocking on their door for Bale.

From the jinx-ed man (previously Spurs has never won any league matches whenever Bale started) to the much improved player now. And he is only 21yo. More to come from this lad.

Boss hails incredible Giggs

QUOTE
Sir Alex has heaped praise on Ryan Giggs, labelling him "an incredible human being".

United's most decorated servant netted the winner in last Sunday's FA Cup victory over Liverpool and put in an all-energy display that defied logic for a 37-year-old.

And while his ageing limbs mean he won't play every week, Sir Alex insists he remains a vital cog in the Reds' well-oiled machine.

"He is just an incredible human being," declared the boss. "He defies the logic of forwards when he plays at the level he did last Sunday.

"Obviously we know how to manage him. He doesn't play every week but he makes a contribution that lifts the team. He did that in the second half last week. He was outstanding. His fitness was fantastic. He kept going for the whole 90 minutes.

"He has been doing that for two decades. No other player has ever done that, or is ever likely to. He is quite an amazing man."

With Ji-sung Park still away on international duty, Sir Alex says keeping Giggs fresh over the next few weeks will be vital to United's title charge.

"Ji-sung Park is a loss because he makes a tremendous contribution to our team," added the Scot. "Keeping Ryan fresh is going to be the secret for us."

Future bright for Reds' defence

QUOTE
Sir Alex Ferguson believes that in Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling, United boast the best young centre-backs in England.

Recent injuries to Rio Ferdinand and captain Nemanja Vidic have afforded the two youngsters the chance to impress against Stoke and Liverpool respectively.

The pair have now clocked up 26 appearances between them this term, and Sir Alex has seen enough to declare they have very bright futures ahead of them at Old Trafford.

"They’re doing very well," the Reds boss said. "I have the two best young centre-backs in the country and I’ve no doubt in my mind about that – they’re absolutely outstanding."

Smalling impressed against Stoke, particularly in dealing with physical striker Kenwyne Jones, so the decision to leave him out against Liverpool last weekend was not easy.

"The difficult thing for me on Sunday was to play Evans above Smalling, but the fact that Evans is used to playing on the left side of the centre-backs decided it," Sir Alex explained.

"Smalling was very good against Stoke but Rio was fit again and it meant I had to replace Vidic with one of them – I chose Jonny because he’s more used to playing on the left side."

Evans certainly didn’t let the boss down as he and the rest of United’s backline prevented Liverpool from creating any significant chances in the 1-0 win.
