John Wick (2014)
Keanu Reeves. What can I say? He plays a certain type of character rather well and he fits quite snugly into the character of John Wick. A badass that gives zero f**ks unless you cross him and when you do cross him, you'd wish that you'd never been born. That's John Wick review in one line. This movie plays like a video game. Plenty of bad guys. Plenty of weapons. Plenty of bullets flying around. Don't have to give your brain a workout to enjoy this one. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. Oh, and don't forget the popcorn. John Wick is a retired hit man and was the best one around it seems. Things are all fine and dandy until someone decides to to steal his car and kill his dog. You DO NOT kill John Wick's dog. Period. Entertaining but you'll not remember this movie 2 weeks from now. Rating : 2.5 stars out of 5 P.S. : I'll rate this one better than Interstellar. A least it did not disappoint and bore me and I went into both shows with no research apart from watching the trailers. |

Big Hero 6 (2014)
This is another Disney 3D animated offering after Frozen. Says on the billboard and ads that the same team is responsible. Seems like Pixar is leaving its mark on Disney's animation arm. Big Hero 6 is actually a kid-friendly version of the Avengers. If you've seen the Avengers and The Incredibles, you would have just about seen this movie. It's almost the same but with different set of characters and a very toned down villian and family friendly action scenes. No blood, nobody dies and lots of debris. The action takes place in a fictional city of San Fransokyo. I must say they did a great job melding San Francisco and Tokyo together for it. The city looks great and has signature looks from both real life cities. They have even melded the cultures from the two cities. As with any Disney / Pixar offerings, this movie has a lot of heart. Mixing it up with the action is some humour which is done nicely. Nice plot and nice pacing. I think this is as close as Disney can get before someone calls them out for copying anime and/or Japanese tokusatsu. Great distraction for a couple of hours and great for the whole family with something for the kids and adults alike. Extra bonus is that Big Hero 6 DOES NOT come with an annoying song that kids will want to play over and over again. Rating : 3 stars out of 5 |

Whiplash – Full Metal Jacket in a music school
Wow….utterly mesmerising performances from Miles Teller and JK Simmons. Each time a conflict sparks you are drowned helplessly in their intense exchange. Again the story is a familiar one, it has enough spin to stand on its own. When you get to see Andrew (Teller) performing his “Rocky” moment, you are fully taken in by his performance. Do not be misled by the trailer, Andrew is not a victim in the story. Can’t stress enough Miles Teller is a strong consideration for Oscar and Simmons has no reason not to compete in supporting role category. Not sure Malaysia will be showing this, so keep an eye for this excellent film on blu-ray or “ahem”Oscar bait DVD leaks“ahem”.Easily my top 5 in 2014. The Guest – Something to consider
Coming off terrorizing a family reunion in last year’s “You’re Next”, Adam Wingard took a spin on a pseudo slasher movie. A mysterious guest David turns up on the doorstep of a family who lost their son in Iraq. He claims to be BFF of the say deceased son during their tour in Iraq. The family members quickly fall under his charming demeanor. So the movie god says David is not what he appears to be. When the movie hits the turn spot, the whole movie dynamic shift to some rather fun time. Overall, it has its moments and decent enough to keep you watching. It's an OK movie. |

A Hard Day - The best action thriller of the year
A colleague was talking enthusiastically about this hidden gem. Then I did some research and found out it was positively received at TIFF and Cannes. It's a very crafty film that weave in and out of multi genres that does not feel contrived.Up front the lead is not really a goody hero material as he is morally bankrupt as most Korean cops perceived on the silver screen. A simple hit and run snowballs into a series of calamities for the hero to overcome. You simply won't know what comes next to torment Ko Gun Soo, the set-up does make sense and more importantly felt very organic. Underscoring the tension and edge of the seat scenes, there's great use of dark humour to give the film a dash of personality. Also the antagonist is quite refreshing to watch and a smart one to boot during his cat and mouse game. The trailer just a small glimpse and not a proper representation of the actual film.Super duper recommended for a deliciously inventive action thriller. You can actually watch the whole movie on youtube right now. |

QUOTE(Hartigan @ Nov 9 2014, 01:27 AM) No Escape (1994) I definitely going 2 give a try soon"Don't ever turn your back on me again" a tagline that spinning in my mind after watching this film... The film stars Ray Liotta, he is great in doing action in the film although he's not categorized in the action genre stars, but I found him can be described as the second Van Damme since I saw this action plus sci-fi film that will keeps you on the seats! Recommended 6/10, if you're a 90's action film fans, or give a try on Ray Liotta performance throughout this film |

QUOTE(Mickey C @ Nov 9 2014, 10:28 PM) Fury (2014) - is definitely worth seeing, world class tank fighting. It look like a true story, but the fact is no, Fury is not a true story. Who like combat action, Fury is for you... go watch it guys... Director David Ayer's is really a hit and miss eh.. sometime his movie will be such a great story telling piece such as Street Kings and End of Watch.Sometimes his movie would be convoluted and weak even with great set pieces and action such as... Sabotage I wanna like Sabotage, full with known actors that act outside of their usual roles and changed image such as Sam Worthington, Mireille Enos, Josh Holloway, Max Martini, Terrence Howard, Olivia Williams and even Schwarzenegger himself. But the movie convoluted story telling and disconnected pace and logic just made this film dumb. In Street Kings, you won't even mind the logic because you are just so absorbed in the pace and the story, but Sabotage fails to deliver that. Sad because it has a promising premise and mystery thriller, but the story telling and pace is just fail on this one, u can't even care and be absorb in the situation and can't help noticing many flaws and illogical things. Kudos given to strong acting by Mireille Enos and Sam Worthington. Extra credit given to Sam Worthington and Josh Holloway because their character really made me surprised and not knowing who they were until the credit They both really shows a different side and image than what we usually been given. Thumbs to this 3 actors who shines the most in the movie |

John Wick (2014)
There is something very old school about this movie. And I don't mean 1980s old school, further back then that. Back to when Warner Brothers were churning out a lot of Gangster movies... I don't know why, the feeling of this movie is a throw back to that period... Gangster/Film Noir-ishness. And IT IS GREAT!!!! AS of yesterday, I have watched 3 moths in the past three weeks and all three movies are GREAT!!! Okay, back to this movie, how throw back is this movie, if this movie was a silent movie, the context of the movie would still have been CLEAR!!! Don't get me wrong, when I say old school does it mean this movie is not violent, Far from it!! There aren't any good guys here! There are just people with/without code of conduct!!! Go watch this. I cannot emphasize this move, GO WATCH THIS!! My Two Sen |

Big Hero 6 (2014)
Disney Animation is back, and I dare say, I think they are currently more progressive, in terms of story telling, compared to what Pixar is churning out!!! (I did not even go see Pixar offering this year) This is an AMAZING movie. The emotional roller coaster that it takes the viewer on... FANTASTIC!!! The characters are well flesh out, the CGI breathtaking, and the voice characters are at the top of the game!!! I really don't want to spoil anything for you. Great last three week, great movie one after another, 2014 is going out with a BANG!! GO WATCH THIS. My Two Sen |

Last night watched The Dark Valley and this morning, just finished watching The Salvation.
Both movies about vengeance with old wild wild west background. Finally my yearning for a good cowboy movie is fulfilled. (though this is not really a cowboy movie) Love both of them but i think The Dark Valley is much better coz the way the hero taking out his revenge is something i gonna do if i'm in his shoes. The Salvation is quite sad in the beginning I give: The Dark Valley - 7.5/10 The Salvation - 7/10 |

Banksy does New York
The elusive graffiti artist strikes to troll New York for 31 straight days. Each day he presents a piece of his “art” should it be political or social overtones or just plain pranking the public. Each endeavor is as elaborate as his previous attempt and more importantly, his ingenious art of trolling. While this documentary has nothing to do with Banksy himself, it presents the crazy scavenging hunt clues for people to discover his art, defacing it, stealing it, profiting from it and authority failing to stop him. Take this doc as an introduction to the notorious street artist whose identity still anonymous to the world. If you can dig his ludicrous exploits or message, do check out his brilliant directorial debut “Exit through the gift shop” which was profound in its messaging and a blast to watch. It was his greatest trick/troll yet. |

Rise of the Legend 黃飛鴻之英雄有夢 (2014)
This is a China/US collaboration production. When this movie was being made, I believe the producers hope that words like, DARING, BOLD, FRESH, NEW PERSPECTIVE and BREAKTHROUGH would be used to describe this movie. So did they managed the above??... Because it is a joint venture with the US, of course they would have things to say about casting, so it was not surprising to see people like Byron Mann (Street Fighter 1994, he played Ryu) in here, and have to add, it is not a bad thing. He is actually a decent actor. Being a fan of the movie Unbeatable (2013), I was actually intrigued when I discovered that Peng Yu Yan is the new Wong Fei Hong. What he achieve in Unbeatable (2013) is astounding! The production of this movie is amazing. The 19th Century Canton Port is so realistic. They literally, was able to give us a Pseudo Representation of the way of life, in Canton during the 19th Century. Very immersive indeed!! Again, because it is a joint venture, I really wonder how much meddling the American producers did, because I can see, influence from movies like Lone Ranger (2013), Batman Begins (2005) etc. This is literally, the "origins story" of Wong Fei Hong!! Please note that I am NO expert about all things related to him. I only know two thing about him 1) Wong supposedly instructed Guangdong's local militia in martial arts and once followed the Black Flag Army to fight the Imperial Japanese Army during the Japanese invasion of Taiwan in 1895. 2) After his death, his wife and sons migrated to Hong Kong, and from then on, his legends lived on, and many a Hong Kong movies were made about him. I am actually familiar with the Hong Kong Black and White movies done in the 60s. There was a late 70s TV series about him that left the most impression on me. Shaw Brothers made I think at least two Wong Fei Hong movies in the 70s for local and International Market. I believe most people would know about the movie that Tsui Hark made in the 90s, with Jet Li. The best way I can describe this movie is that if you know the movie The Blade (1995) made by Tsui Hark in the 90s, The viciousness of that movie, is magnified TEN FOLD in this movie!!! This is a violent, violent movie. Wong Fei Hong is not longer and Faultless Person in a Black and White world In this movie, he is a shade of gray in a world that is 24 million shades of gray. As impressed as I was with Peng Yu Yan in The Unbeatable, I personally believe, here he had bitten off more than he can chew. He just does not have the acting maturity needed to portray this role convincingly. The same applies to Angelababy (can some one please explain to me, what is so special about her??) By Jove, she is a stick!!!!! Okay, let me do it, like this The Good Production quality is through the roof!! 19th Century, Canton, China is very realistically portrayed here. Sammo Hung still got it. Having American actor, Byron Mann here, is appreciated. Tony Leung Ka-fai is in this!!! The Bad Tony Leung Ka-fai role has too little scene time. The "heroes" mission is not well define and articulated to the audience. The Ugly Why, on god's green earth did they decide to hire a Japanese composer Shigeru Umebayashi, to write the score for a Chinese movie for THAT period. It makes absolutely, positively, NO SENSE. It did not GO TOGETHER AT ALL!!!! Peng Yu Yan & Angelababy do not have the acting chops to pull off their respective roles... yet. Having Peng Yu Yan fight Sammo Hung, there is just no comparison. Sammo Hung had obviously eaten "night porridge" (it's a Chinese thing) and Peng..., no. I humbly submit to you, My Two Sen This post has been edited by Mov_freak: Dec 3 2014, 11:44 PM |

Transcendence (2014)
Many of you might have missed this movie starring Johnny Depp. I know I missed it at the theaters and caught it only on DVD. Transcendence is like a horror movie for the internet generation. Those of you that can't peel yourself away from your smartphones or tablets and have social networks firmly entrenched into your daily routine will understand the horror scenario that I am referring to. The movie is quite decent and entertaining. It does not have much actions and big explosions but it does have some nifty special effects and a fairly good plot. Johnny Depp, playing Will Caster, a brilliant scientist, is good but you won't see any of his flamboyant acts here. He's really understated and does not do much apart from standing there and talking but that's what the role required. Rebecca Hall plays Evelyn, Will's wife and fellow researcher. She also turns in a good performance. Completing the supporting roles are Paul Bettany, Kate Mara and Morgan Freeman. Apart from Kate Mara who did not give her role the weight it needed, the rest are decent. The story deals with Will Caster on the verge of a breakthrough in the latest in AI computing. He's about to create a sentient AI supercomputer but an organization known as R.I.F.T (Revolutionary Independence From Technology) is against him and his ideas. They plan to kill Will. This forces Will's hands and he uploads his own consciousness into the computer. Rating : 2.5 out of 5 stars Below are my thoughts and comments on the movie. Spoilers abound.
