Transcendence (2014)

This movie is, unique.

Like the movie Source Code (2011) it surprised me, in that the twist it took went the other way from how I assume it would go.

The irony is Paul Bettany (Javis in the Iron man and Avengers movie) is now the human, and Johnny Depp is the "computer".

This movie is about A.I. and if I put more into this review, I might spoil it for you...

If you like science fiction, give this a go.

Movie tittle & year : Hercules Thracian War 2014

Review

Great movie. Great cast Dwayne Johnson should feature this movie very well. Watching Hercules fought with a big tree funny 2014

I never thought Hercules never really use his father power.

Merantau (2009)

Simple storyline, very well shot and pretty decent cast.

This is suppose to be Iko Uwais first movie, and it is good.

He is no "method" actor. What he brings to the table is a sense of "earnest-ness", if you understand what I mean.

And he is a skill Silat Artist. There is a sense of deja vu here, because this movie has almost the same vibe as Ong-bak (2003). Credit where credit is due, the director, Gareth Evans, know what he wanted and he was able to get it, at a very modest budget. I love the camera work in this!!

This movie also brings up the subject matter of human trafficking. Malaysia is thrown into this limelight recently, because an international rating has reduced our country's rating, in term of reducing the issue of human trafficking.

This reminds me of the ads that has been circulating, you know the one, that has the tagline "If the eating stop, the killing would too" (eating of shark fin, and no, I do not condone the consumption of shark fin).

So, I say this to our western counterparts, if the demand stops, the trafficking would too.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)

If you have read my reviews before, you would know I'm a complainer... laugh.gif

I always go on and on about how Hollywood gets it wrong, especially big budget movies....

Today, I am happy to announce, I am going to eat crow...

Why?

Because this movie is ALMOST perfect!!!

ALMOST perfect script.

ALMOST perfect cast.

ALMOST perfect C.G.I

Perfect Pacing!!

I only have two points I have issue with, it they resolve that, this would be a perfect movie!!

This is an ALMOST perfect Summer Blockbuster!!! And is probably the best Summer Movie to date... Might change tomorrow after Guardians of the Galaxy, might not.

I really hope they put another one out!!!

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

What sold Iron Man was Robert Downey Jr..

Captain America had super boy scout Chris Evans.

Thor had Chris Hemsworth to ham things up!!

Avengers... for Pete's Sake is an Avengers movie!!!

Apart from Avengers, all the source material above were never BIG selling comics before the movies...

Now we get Guardians of the Galaxy...

Can we get MORE OBSCURE than THAT!!! I think not...

So let see what does the movie have going for it.

1) Chris Pratt (Who??)

2) Zoe Saldana (She was blue, now she is... GREEN!!?!)

3) Dave Bautista (er... I don't follow WWE)

4) Vin Diesel (Groot, don't ask... Are they trying to make a statement about Vin Diesel's lack of vocabulary??? laugh.gif)

5) Bradley Cooper (Rocket, A talking Raccoon...)

Okay, before I go on, let me just say that the way the movie opens (the first 15 - 20 mins), shows that Marvel/Disney has BIG cahonees... tongue.gif

For this movie to be really big, Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) has to be more Han Solo than... well, Hans Solo (a loveable rogue).

And did he managed that?

In my opinion..., no.....

The production value of this movie is staggering.

As I had presume this movie probably builds up to The Infinity Gauntlet movie (go buy this on paperback, it is pretty good).

It is actually quite unfair of me to say all fault lays with Chris Pratt, I think the greatest pitfall is

Of for the complete-tist amongst you, are there any short movie at the end of the credit? The answer is yes. Who is the subject matter?

Last note, I much prefer Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes (2014) compared to this.

Muppets Most Wanted (2014)

Haha.

This made my day.

After the reboot The Muppets (2011) I was not sure how they would continue The Muppets in the movies, apparently, right after the first movie.

This movie is so nonsensical, that is actually good!!!

The cameos are staggering!! Celine Dion, Tony Bennett, Lady Gaga, Josh Groban, Salma Hayek, Tom Hiddleston and many many more.

And with all this big stars, it is amazing that alot of them, if you blink you would miss!!!

That shows you the power of The Muppets. People would do things for them they usually would not even consider.

The highlights for me are all the Siberian Gulag scenes. Very VERY funny!!!

Aw come on, we are all young at heart. Watch this. I know that you know you want to.

Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky 力王(1991)

This is a weird movie.

I do remember watching it when is was first release.

Having the chance to rewatched this and it is really REALLY violent.

So much so that in the West, this actually has a cult following.

Do understand that this is 90s Hong Kong practical effects, so they seems fake in today's standards.

I think you have to watch this in the context that it is a 90s Hong Kong movie (with chopped limp, scratch your eyes out, pulling ones guts out etc)

No wonder it has a cult following in the West.

Fan Siu Wong (樊少皇) (best know for his baddie role in Ip Man) headlines this movie.

I cannot emphasize enough that this is NOT for everyone.

3 Days to Kill (2014)

This movie started STRONG.

So much so, initially, that I wanted to write a review RAVING about it.

Half way through, it falter...

And near the end it just got darn silly....

How silly???

Surround Sound is pretty good, so for reference purpose not bad.

Movie would have been much MUCH better if the third act got fixed before the release, but c'est la vie...

Ender's Game (2013)

This is a sci-fi movie that tells the story of Ender Wiggin (Asa Buttefield), a teen genius when it comes to war tactics and strategy. The movie is set in the future where earth has survived a prior invasion attempt by an alien race known as the Formics. To prevent another invasion, the International Fleet is tasked to train young people for battle and command positions in the war against the Formics. Ender is picked by a Colonel Hyrum Graff (Harrison Ford) as a talented potential candidate based on his response to being bullied and his advanced tactical skills.

Ender begins his training but feels increasingly isolated and starts to despise all the violence and killing but he excels. He is selected for Command School and has to undergo a series of simulation battles against the Formics to graduate.

The movie may be a little slow in the beginning and one can feel that the actions never actually starts but the story is tight and if you pay attention to the dialogues, it's quite an engaging movie. Fine performances from all the leads and decent special effects. The ending however can be a bit abrupt and feels a little rushed.

Rating : 3 out of 5 stars.

Hercules (2014)

Hmmm....

Is this year the year of the.... loin cloth??

Okay, before you misunderstand, what I meant is that we have 4 large production swords and saddles movies, namely

1) 300: Rise of an Empire (2014)
2) Pompeii (2014)
3) The Legend of Hercules (2014)
4) Hercules (2014)

What can I say about Hercules (2014)?

I say, THANK GOODNESS IT IS NOT THE LEGEND OF HERCULES (2014)!!!!

Everything is better done!!

The Direction (Good).

The Script (Clever).

The Casting (Well done).

The Production Design (Authentic).

The Costume Design (NO MINI SKIRT WHITE TOGA for THE ROCK *Phew*).

This actually "challenge" the mythology of Hercules, and there lays in the cleverness of the script!!

Dwayne Johnson is really becoming a pretty good actor, and the materials he is working on, does emphasize his strength.

Another thing that surprised me is the director of the movie is Brett Ratner. The same director alot of X-Men fans claims almost killed the movie franchise..., and I have to add, I like his work here (and also like his Red Dragon (2002)).

So, what are you waiting for, if you like Sword and Saddles movies, this is pretty good!!

Broken – A more subtle revenge thriller from South Korea

The first hour is pretty spot on when comes to setting up the characters. In tone, it’s a much more fleshed out movie when compared to last year’s “Prisoners”. While the main story is about the destroyed father searching for his daughter’s killers, it also touches on a failed justice system that allows light sentences on prosecuted underage murderer. I’m pretty impressed with the jump cut editing that shows how confident the director is in his narrative choice. Some might find it jarring but here it became an effective tool to build suspense without going too expository. Pacing or rather direction switch gear to a three way cat and mouse game during the second half between the father, the cop and the killer. It also not afraid to show uncomfortable scenarios like how underage prostitution ring responsible for the killing. Both lead actors gave an exemplary performance as the grieving father and troubled cop. A solid effort.
