First batch? wow...

So I believe u know Dr Faizal Jamlos, Mr. Shaiful Aziz, Mr. Sani and other lecturers from the first and second batch. FYI, Dr. Faizal is currently the Deputy Dean in SCCE....
*
yes, I know Dr. Faizal and Mr. Sani, they were in the same course and the same batch as I was, but I don't really know who Mr. Shaiful is. Maybe if I see a picture I might remember but he was definitely not in the same batch.
and I do know that Dr. Faizal is the deputy dean, he did mention it to me when he chatted with me sometime ago
I haven't chatted with him for a very long time now hmm.gif He also mentioned that he's into communication and signal processing like antenna and other stuffs which were really my weakest subjects doh.gif

Hi descendant,

Is it cool to be a lecturer? By the way, are you holding a Master or a PhD degree? Roughly how is the salary scheme for a lecturer in Malaysia? Don't need to provide exact numbers, just an overall picture will do. smile.gif

Thanks in advance. tongue.gif

first of all sorry for the late reply, been busy lately sad.gif
it's not really cool to be a lecturer there are a lot of responsibilities and challenges
I'm currently holding a Master
about the salary scheme, my salary scheme might be different than the lecturers in the universities
it's because I'm under the scheme DH, this scheme apply to all the lecturers under Kementerian Pengajian Tinggi Malaysia teaching in Polytechnics and Community Colleges
and the salary is not as high as the university scheme which is DS, owh btw for UiTM they have their own salary scheme which is DM.. I think

I'm not really sure about the other scheme but for DH, if you are fresh graduate and have a degree in engineering you will start with DH41 P1T5 which means you will get a basic salary of RM2057.65 but that's the old SSM system, now it should be higher maybe around RM2300
other than the basic salary you will get allowances such as the housing allowance, public service, cost of living and critical allowance. so total up the salary will be around RM3000++
since I hold a Master certificate, I start at DH41 P1T8, not much difference only around RM200 from T5 salary laugh.gif
well that's for DH
as for the salary of university lecturer, I think the starting salary might be DS45 P1T4, RM2821.57 (old SSM) but I'm not really sure since it also depends on the management of the university. In universities I don't think you can find lecturers with only a degree, most will have Master and PhD, those with degree will usually be PLV or tutors. PLV uses the J scheme (jurutera). To know more about this, you guys can ask your lecturers or head over to www.jpa.gov.my and look for pekeliling skim perkhidmatan pensyarah university biggrin.gif

Wow, that's a nice write up about lecturer's salary in Malaysia. But I heard rumors saying that lecturers in private institutions earn better than their counterparts working in public institutions. Well, is that true?

Basically what are the responsibilities of a lecturer like you? Doing research and publishing papers besides lecturing? Just wanna compare the job scope of our local lecturers with those in other countries.  brows.gif
*
Of course the private sector earns more than the government employees laugh.gif
private institutions salary is more flexible and is based on profit, more profit more salary and you have to work really hard to earn it
public institution salary are determined by the government, all fixed according to the pekeliling and you rarely ever get any bonus too tongue.gif

As for the responsibilities, there are differences between universities, polytechnics and community colleges under KPTM. But still the common ones are giving out lectures, prepare documentations and doing continuous research and innovation.
I am a lecturer in Community College and here in CC, our focus is on the community so we are also responsible in holding out various types of short courses for the community regardless of their age. Lifelong learning. So sometimes I have to work on Saturdays and Sundays too in order to teach or organize these short courses. Not only do we teach and organize these courses, we are also responsible to promote them and find the participants in order to achieve our targets.

Other than that.. there are mountains of other work, such as ensuring the student employability, making sure that every single students can get a job so we have to held out programs, courses and whatever it takes to get them ready for employment. There are also administration job and the scope of the job depends on your position. For example Pegawai Pengambilan Pelajar will be responsible for the student intake, Pegawai Hal Ehwal Pelajar will be responsible for welfare of the students and organizing student related activities and so on. I am currently the Pegawai Multimedia dan Sumber in my college and all the ICT stuffs in the college is under my responsibility from the networking to the computers, projectors, PABX and also the library, basically all the multimedia related jobs including the college website/portal, the college bulletins and others.... sweat.gif
Owh and when there are events, we are also the ones that have to organize them such as the convocation ceremony, merdeka day celebration, open day events, career fair and etc..
If I list out all the responsibilities that we have it might just take forever and ever laugh.gif
basically we're the jack of all trades and giving out lectures to the students is actually a very small part of our responsibilities thumbup.gif
