Hi there,

Recently i just bought an IBAN classic guitar, called the SAPE. (pronounced as SA-PAY).

I youtubed for several short clip for newbies with some basic chords and musics. I'm very new with string instruments as i used to be in a brass band with silver long flutes and piccolo (considered as wind instruments).

Here, i will like to set-up a discussion thread for all SAPE players in LYN to share about the tips and lessons for SAPE learners.

as attached is my new SAPE which i bought it from my iban friend from Long Lama. price tag RM350, a craftwork by the elders in the longhouse. Took me around 3 months to get it since the day i put my order.

scaled with my nokia 1600 beside the SAPE.

*mod, i read the rules. hope i din go against them. nod.gif

**i editted the topic from IBAN to DAYAK, as it is really a big family for the ethnics. I will try to categorized the differences between the clans' sape design.

er..not really.1 bass, 3 treble. u only play 1 string (the lower 1) for the main tune, and the 3 strings above are like background music.

my first online teacher.

i watched back the vid, found out actually the bass is made of the 4 strings together, and the main chord is the lowest string. LOL. weird, right?

hows the string tension on the sape compared to guitar? sounds higher than classical but lower than steel acoustic?

if u understand mandarin, u might interested to watch the vid below to understand its tuning.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNQSmBXD9ZE&feature=related

vid from rambochai (member of THE REMNANTS, Kuching).

to answer ur question, i myself feels it is considered a lil sharper than acoustic. i dun play modern guitar, so i dun understand much about guitars.

p/s: i just broke 1 of the string..tuning is difficult for my unit as it's 100% traditional made, unlike the 1 rambochai is using.

Last year I went to sarawak cultural village, I saw people play sape and they show us how to make a Sape. It's quite interesting, the shape is like a boat, and the guy performed his sape through an amp. He installed a pick up on his sape.

He says it sounds like chinese instrument, as chinese instruments use pentatonic notes, sape use pentatonic notes as well. Sape is a very simple instrument to play, there's 4 strings, only 1 string is used for melody, the other strings for accompaniment. Normally people strums all the strings with thumb.

I bought home a Sape music CD, I like the music, the music is very traditional and I have a very calm feeling while listening to it.

That is one curious instrument.

Wonder if there's a commercialized version.

F is the common trend now. however it can be tuned based on the players themselves
