{Taeyeon 101: the journey into her mysterious mind } {★} ⇒ Childhood * During middle school, she wanted to skip school and sneak out with her friends, they had to help each other jump over a wall or fence and when she was about to come down her coat was caught on the sharp edges so she was like hanging on it like a scarecrow with her arms spread wide. * Taeyeon got a nosebleed once because she got in a fight. (Poor baby) * Taeyeon used to chucked ice to the grass field in front of her apartment with her brother. And they competed who can throw the ice the farther, like icecubes. And during winter, when there are snow covering the grass field, they would try to draw something by throwing tons of ice cubes. * So one day, kid taeng peeled fruits for her daddy taeng after he came home from exercising. She specifically peeled sweet watermelons, which isn’t daddy taeng’s favorite fruit. But daddy taeng was moved and ate sweet watermelons anyway and he ate the seeds too, which he usually takes them out. (Good at heart) * Taeyeon: “So I had dolls and I cried a lot when its arm or leg fell off.” * Taeyeon used to…try to text and study. Turned out she texted more. * Taeyeon thinks those are good at math are like aliens to her. She is so fascinated with math nerds. * Back in elementary school, Taeyeon remarked saying that she was considered one of the tallest girl in her grade. One of the guests then joked saying “Ah, does that mean you’ve maintained the same height all the way until now?” To which Taeyeon replied saying she’s probably grown at least 2 cm more? She also fought frequently with boys back then, perhaps because she was taller/bigger than them? Girls tend to grow more faster than boys in elementary. Despite her looks, she’s also fought very viciously at times with others (including her brother). She commented saying that she was a ‘Fighter’ back then. * When Taeyeon was in high school, she was part of the library club at one point… and also a movie-watching and a dancing club. * Taeyeon used to play burping games with her brother * When she was a trainee, she used to play around hiding in a locker. * Taeyeon was asked out by this guy, when she was in grade school, but that guy was a player and he asked her out…and Taeyeon was the 3rd or 4th person….and Taeyeon was like wth is wrong with you. * When Taeyeon was forced to learn tables by her mother, her father was taping it with a camcorder! * When Taeyeon was an elementary student, she didn’t pay attention in the class and failed in a multiplication quiz. Then her mother got angry at it, she forced Taeyeon to learn multiplication at home, holding a switch. * Just like every little girl, little taeng was fascinated by her mom’s cosmetics products, while her mom was at work. Soon, she was putting this and that on her face; she tried blue eyeshadows…then black eyeshadows for smokey look. Time flew by and her mom rung the door bell, while taeng was still playing around with her mom’s cosmetics. So she opened the front door with her face down. Then as soon as she opened the door for her mom, she ran to the bathroom, before her mom noticed. However she still had bluish make up mark around her eyes so mommy taeng found out anyway. * You know how you write what you wanna be when you grow up thing at school? So taeng’s dream was becoming a singer. But because her school teachers belittled about how becoming a singer is bad thing, kid taeng became self-conscious about writing down her dream as becoming a singer; she was like that until middle school. Then during her 2nd year at mid school, she actually took a bold step and focused her activities on becoming a singer. Unfortunately, during her last year at mid school, her teacher wasn’t so understanding about taeyeon’s dream of becoming a singer. Teacher: “A student needs to study…why would you study music? TaeYeon: that’s why I used to be embarrassed about “What my dream is…” * When she was little she would race with the subway trying to outrun with her friends as the subway gets off the station. She thought she could outrun the subway, because you know it starts off slowly until it gains momentum. Like in the beginning Taeng was ike yeah!!! then….NOOO!!! ⇒ Imperfect yet extraordinary creature * Taeyeon: I think if i were to be a guy i would do really good (as in being a boyfriend) * Taengoo mentioned that she really enjoys playing games and is “quite good” at it (she said it herself lol) She specifically enjoys playing arcade games (ie. Super Mario) and those games where you have to clear stages. She also likes playing those tycoongames where you have to sell stuff (ie. coffee, cakes, etc.) * Taeyeon is so bad with directions. Her destination was directly across the street but she took a taxi. Then taxi driver gave a strange look to taeyeon when they reached the destination in 10 seconds. A quick u-turn…drove for like 5seconds..arrived Aigoo!!! * She sleeps with her eyes 2/3 opened. * Her most precious possession is perfume. * She loves guys with broad shoulders. (Me! Me! ;p) * Taeyeon dislikes things with lots of legs (aka insects) * Taeyeon: so after watching harry potter i thought i was a magician. im serious. i searched broom sticks that fly and searched for wands and remember magic spells. i was a bit immature. * Being such a shorty as she is, she once complained: “One thing I’m depressed about being short…you know how I’m on stage for recording for shows and stuff? Staff would give me a platform to stand on so I would be as tall as other ppl T_T” * Taengoo loves weird nasty stuff like bathroom/poops/barfing.farting jokes. ie: her hurricane diarrhea joke * She can’t resist hot weather cuz she can’t sleep So she loves winter because since it’s cold, you can put on more clothes to warm yourself up. But during summer, even if you take most of your clothes off you might still be suffering from the heat. (Me too) * Taeng said she prefers hugging, because she wants larger surface area of physical contact. Taeng: “Am I weird for saying that?” “I really love physical contact”. * TY: When I get a boyfriend, I wouldn’t want to watch movies with him because it’s a waste of time; i wouldn’t want to watch the screen for like hrs; I want to see his face. * She thinks she looks like a seal after shower. * Taeyeon knows how to play starcraft, and she likes protoss. (Nice!) * Taeyeon's ideal guy from dragon ballz is Vegata. ⇒ SNSD's leader * Taeyeon once was in a very serious/angry mode writing this long text to someone on her phone. She doesn’t remember which member did this but one of them came up and closed her flip cell phone as a joke. She said she was then just speechless at that member….. cause she had all these words and her thoughts written down on her cell at that moment that she couldn’t remember again. * Taeyeon said she’s not good at making a ramen noodle; her dad can make a better one. Other members scolded Taeyeon for putting too much water, when Taeyeon tried to make a Japagaeti (Instant noodle version of Jajangmyun). * Taeyeon explained the reason why she always stands between 2 tallest snsd members is because she does that to stand out more * She once did a 1000 piece puzzle in the middle of their dorm living room because she couldn’t sleep, and no one could do anything there anymore. * She always hides her tears. * When asked why she seems to talk less nowadays and it almost looks like she is holding back a little to maintain her idol image she answered, * Taeyeon: Haha, did you feel that way? Joking around and laughing out loud is a side of myself, but I also have a quiet side. After finishing our 1st album promotions, I continued starring in variety programs and radios. I had numerous chances to talk by myself or show my talents. So when I’m with all my members, I try to step back a little now. * Because of time the manager made announcement that handshakes won’t be allowed but Taengoo stubbornly offered handshakes. The manager kept trying to stop her but she argued with him that fans had waited all morning for it. * One thing that made me know Taeyeon was the leader, was that Soshi girls were sitting in the back in the beginning. Then they were to get ready and it was commercial time and someone was singing and the girls had to move to the front seats. At that time Taeyeon became like the commander and was instructing everyone, and that's something I remember. (@music station) * According to Yoona, Taeyeon didn’t talk much about her sadness, pain, and hardships before. But now she talks to members about those hardships in her heart. * Taeyeon answered that before she was… like when fans approach her she would tend to step back. But doing the concert last year she says she has gone through lots of changes in her thoughts and character. She said there are some things she made promise to herself. And many fans visit her parents spec shop and she talks to her dad at night about them. Listening to all the stories from fans Taeyeon says she felt that she should approach the fans herself. And said “From now on I will be loving more and more and I don’t think it will ever turn less heehee”. Compiled by hiD@soshified QUOTE A lot of this post I reaped from some of my other posts here on SSF. It's Taeyeon's birthday, and I wanted to write a little something about her, as a homage to the leader of Soshi. Taeyeon is the leader of the 9. But what does that mean? What did it mean to her when they were just starting out and what does it mean to her now? There are many styles of leadership. She could have been autocratic, dictatorial, a little sexy Napoleon, but she chose the hardest path in leadership, one might even argue that it was the worst path for her to take. Taeyeon shouldered the heaviest of burdens and chose to remain a friend to her members. She leads by example, with encouragement and constant communication. I think it was Tiffany who said since they'd been together for so long that they would all know if something was not right, that if someone was feeling out of sorts, it was instantly understood, just by looking. There is an important piece of understanding in this. These nine are exceptional people. The nine together are simply the best at what they do, which is to entertain and captivate us. To do that, they need to be in concert, in an orchestration of harmony, with one agenda. If one member is missing, or not with the program, if one member is feeling out of sorts, or ill, if one member is down, it affects them and us all. And yet they do it, day after day, days that stretch 16 to 20 hours or more of constant struggle, individually, in pairs and sub-groups, or as all 9, these girls spend more time with each other than any family I know. They sleep together, eat together, share bathrooms, looks, makeup, thoughts, dreams, tears, encouragement, clothes and love. The only one who keeps herself separate, the only one who maintains a slight emotional detachment is Tengu. Why is that? What makes a girl like her tick? First there is an enormous societal issue that a non-Korean might not understand. How did she become the leader? Well, in Korea it's all about experience, in life or on the job. It's like this. When two strangers meet, the first thing they do is establish commonality. You're a man, I'm a man, you're a white man, I'm a white man, you're a man dressed nicely in a business suit, I'm a man dressed nicely in a business suit. And then things can progress smoothly. It's human nature. The more similar a person is to you, the more you can infer, because you know yourself. It's incongruous when that nice white man in a business suit starts throwing gang signs or whips out crocheting needles and starts making you a sweater. It just doesn't happen. In a heterogeneous society, like America, there are taller walls for people to climb in terms of communication and expectation and ironically, the commonality is often how different people are from one another. But in Korea, it goes like this. You're Korean, I'm Korean. You're older, I'm younger. You lead, I follow. Of course it isn't quite as simplistic as that, there is social stratification, educational boundaries, the rural and urban divide, but still, at the bottom it's all ageism. Leader, unnie, dongsaeng, maknae, sunbae, hoobae. If you pay attention to Kpop, these are words you know. How well you do your duty, as expected of you, as expected of yourself defines worth and self-worth societally. Respect is the name of the game, giving and receiving, according to your role. But being the leader, to a good leader, is more burden than benefit. Burden, burdensome, it's a word used much more in Korean society than American. Boodamsae, burdensome. Expectation is a burden. The expectation that you will do your duty, without shirking. Imagine throwing a party for your peers. It lies on you to be entertaining, to have the place looking wonderful, the food and drinks must be top-notch, the conversation has to flow naturally, the awkward wallflowers have to be engaged. Good parties are rarities because good hosts are rare. So what did it mean to our Tengu? Now imagine, you're going to debut. You've been training for years, learning how to move, and sing, how to hold yourself, how to behave in front of a camera. You've been doing that with friends, colleagues, fellow students, some you're close with, some you've competed with, some you've seen leave and not return. It's been very much a journey of self-improvement. And then the word comes. You're going to debut with these eight girls. Some are close friends, some acquaintances, one or two you don't really know. Oh, by the way, you're the leader. What sort of nightmare has this just become? Imagine the pressure on Taeyeon. The expectation. If the girls fight, it's on her. If one of them is lazy or doesn't improve enough, it's on her. If the group fails, it's on her. Boodamsae? Yeah. Thankfully she was blessed to have these eight, just as hungry for success as she was, just as willing to sweat and spend their tears as she was. But making them one, leading them forward and keeping herself separate, what strength that took, when she had no previous experience. How hard was it? Remember the story of her running away right before their debut? The timing seems about right. Second thoughts, dreading the days ahead, worrying, crying. Such small shoulders to shoulder this burden. But we see her now. She struggles to not outshine any of the others. She's a powerhouse vocalist, incredibly talented, wise beyond her years, and is without a doubt, because of her decisions, the very best leader that Soshi could have ended up with. Flat out, Soshi is exceptional in large part because she is who she is. She's barely into her second decade, when most of her contemporaries are having fun in college, she's riding herd on a platoon and in a warzone to boot. 2009 was THE year of Soshi, and they were on top of their game, every day. They certainly have the awards to prove it, but they also have the bruises, tears and exhaustion spent to earn every accolade and more. I think if any normal person were to live their schedule for a week, we would throw in the towel, or shoot an SME manager depending on whether the gun or towel were closer to hand. Imagine that kind of pressure, on kids barely through their teens. The only thing that allows them to get through another day is their support structure of family, friends, and most importantly each other. Ah, but there's the rub. The worst possible thing for Taeyeon. Simply put, the rest of the girls can lean on each other, but Taeyeon has no one to lean on. She simply can't, because a leader doesn't lean. Add to that, the fact that her family is so far from Seoul. On the odd holiday that SME doles out to the girls, she stays in the dorm, while most of them get to go back to their nearby families. Is it any wonder that she has moments of doubt? Moments when she doesn't want the burden of telling her friends to do something that they have to do? When she herself wants nothing more than to curl up in a ball and cry? And she hides most of what she's feeling from them, just as she mostly hides her tears from us. Three years. Three long years. It wears on a person. Expectation. Constant, unending, indeed, increasing expectation. What's the upside to being a leader? No, not the automatic respect and deference that small-minded people would enjoy. Just pride, pride in leading these girls to success after success. She good at it. Results don't lie, Soshi is the best, not because they are the best singers or dancers, but because they are one. People have their favorite members, I think that's just human nature, but for me, I love whichever one I'm looking at at that moment. Not because I'm somehow immune from picking favorites, but because they are best when they are together. Does something like SNSD just happen? Of course not, SNSD is unnatural, their lack of jealousy is the antithesis of fame-seeking, me-first, ambitious behavior. I mean here we have 9 very talented and beautiful girls, each unique, each driven to succeed, and what do we end up with? A family. A family that believes and challenges and supports each other. And it's Taeyeon and her style of leadership that deserves a huge part of the credit. She's a nurturer, a true mother. She's always happy to fade into the background and let one of her girls have the spotlight and the mic. She's extremely self-deprecating, ridiculously and oddly beautiful, and hilarious. In her solo stage during the Soshi concert, when she's singing Hush Hush, we get to see a Taeyeon that she hides so well. She's a superstar, with megawatt sex bomb appeal. Our dorkmunster supreme can work the stage with the best of them, and not give anything away. Her soaring vocals are the best of any idol. But that is only part of who she is. A small part. I think the closest we get to the real girl inside is her as Chinchin's DJ. She's unconsciously entertaining. She can make faces, eat, talk, laugh with abandon, twirl a pen, pose for stills or bora and people will just stare or listen. She's 158ish centimeters of pure entertainer. It's no accident that just her speaking voice is enough to capture anyone's attention. She doesn't need to show anything more than a funny face to hold her own with any of the other girls. On IY, Sunny and Yuri are the pros. Through their work they let the others shine. Think about that. The best of T-Ara, BEG, Kara, Secret, and it's two Soshi's that lead the group. And yet, when the nine are together, who is the leader, the one that lets the others shine? There's one scene of her, on Inkigayo, the Beauty Girls Talk Talk corner, where she's with the leaders of Kara and 2NE1 and 4Minute. Firstly, of the four, she simply carried the conversation, naturally, without ego, she led the other leaders. I think it was Gyuri who was talking, being positioned at the edge of the group, and JiHyun from 4Minute didn't want to crowd Taeyeon, so she was standing with a normal distance between them, which made Gyuri almost fall outside of the camera's view. Like a true professional, and the true leader she is, she pulled the 4Minute leader close, one, to break the boundaries that only a sunbae could initiate, and two so that Gyuri would have her time in the camera. Even for the closing shot, she took an end spot, letting the two rookie leaders, JiHyun and CL have the center. She was taking care of her hoobaes, her juniors. This is what being a leader is. That's her greatest quality. Her confidence in herself. She knows she can shine brighter than almost anyone else, so she doesn't need to. She knows she can speak better than anyone else, so she doesn't need to. It's only when it's for the group that she opens her mouth, like on the KJE Chocolate show, when everyone else is in tears, she chokes it back, and stays with the program, delivering the wrap up, the segue, the closing bit that keeps the girls moving forward. Except for Taeyeon, each of the members can be her own person, knowing there's eight others waiting to catch them if they fall. I do think she's relaxing more, as the others continue to grow. I just hope, if Taeyeon needs to, that she can let herself go, and realize that asking for help isn't a weakness, but giving her sisters back some of the trust they have in her. Happy birthday, Taeyeon, Soshi's one and only leader. Cr: Auratus (Soshified/Taegang) This post has been edited by Raikkonen: Feb 10 2015, 07:49 AM |
