Hi all,

The company I am working with is currently using Pandaboard (http://pandaboard.org/) for development purposes and we need to build a small case that can house the board, PSU (5V DC) for demo purposes.

Unfortunately since no one in the company has expertise in making one, we are looking to see if any interested modders would like to take up this small project and create a case for us within a stipulated time frame. Of course, we will also reimburse for materials and labor cost, as long as within reasonable range.

this could be a nice thread if a few modders took the challenge. maybe a bit more info cud get the ball rolling... i'm not familiar with the application of the board so excuse my ignorance. maybe a few our moddrs cud give better suggestions that you can do yourself.

just out of curiosity, a few questions:

- how big is the psu, how does it look like? internal/external?
- any heat problem that need to be addressed?
- what is the final usage?
- is it going to be static or moved around when used?
- function or looks more important?
- what kind of casing ideas do you have in mind?

looking at the size, i think you can find a generic box (wood, plastic, etc) that could fit this board. those expansion slot could be a potential problem if you need to change it frequently (LCD and Jtag). power & reset button is in the middle - a big challenge unless u desolder and locate it externally or mod to pin style like pc motherboard.

if i have the time and resources, i'd give it a shot. good luck bro.

Thanks for the feedback, dude. Let me answer some of the questions.

how big is the psu, how does it look like? internal/external?
We are still deciding on it, but it should be a small PSU that is located internally. The board only needs 5V DC so the PSU should be roughly same size or slightly bigger than the board itself.

any heat problem that need to be addressed?
Actually we're still testing the board, but i don't think it will generate a lot of heat to require active cooling.

what is the final usage?
Demo unit for our company project. Need to show proof-of-concept

is it going to be static or moved around when used?
Static.

function or looks more important?
Currently function.

what kind of casing ideas do you have in mind?
Something lightweight and portable, maybe using acrylic plastic or some sheet metal.


Budget currently undecided yet, but you can give us a rough estimate and we can see if finance can give us the budget, because we have zero idea how much these things usually cost.

looking at the board again, power looks like an external adapter. and looking at reference application its actually built into a device. this means it doesn't produce too much heat, a heatsink shaped box could be used here.


will it be visible or hidden? i've seen setup boxes the size of my palm strapped behind a 46" LCD. in this case, looks doesn't matter as long as it works and protects the unit especially if its going to be outdoor.

can you PM me personally, got a few more questions in mind. i think it can be done and shud not be complicated. i'm not based in KL anymore so a bit hard to check out possible ready solution. a few more questions that you can PM to me too:

1. how many output connections are you going to use? i foresee video and sound. u have 3 possible connection for that, plus 1 for audio (3.5mm). possibility of USB connection, serial and camera. those connectors that are facing outward are ok, its the one inside that worries me. if its not going to be used, the casing can just be blanked out but we always want it to be accessible so that needs to be addressed too.

2. the tallest part i see is the ethernet + USB port. how tall is that?

3. any spare board that u can pass to me for mock up? i can use cardboard template but i prefer to have it in my hand, u can detect problem quickly and can deal with it straight away.
