Some people in some forum says that the built in decoder for Z5500 is crappier then soundcard such as A2ZS or A4 Pro. But that's what they say .. who knows. sweat.gif Have to ask owners of Z5500 here. biggrin.gif

most of the dvd is 5.1 oni..  cry.gif

If you have at least an Audigy 2 ZS, when you are playing DVDs, the soundcard will automatically upmix it to 7.1 for you. That's why there's this setting. user posted image

Boomy ? No way! I'm using this speaker for a week now and i think it's not boomy at all. It really depends on where you place your speaker, the stuffs around it and where you put it. I used to use a Gigaworks S750, good speaker but the amp blew up. doh.gif So i end up with this speaker instead. Hope it's reliable. I noticed it has auto off system if it overheats (in the manual...). =o

Anyhow, i was using stereo speaker only in between the S750 and this Z-5500. Oh how i missed surround sound in games and movies. cry.gif

Logitech is famous in burning fuses, so its more reliable(cheaper i'd say) and u can easily swap it wif those slow burns...
*
Is it too easy for it to burn fuse ? Coz i think mine just did. shocking.gif I was just vaccuming my room and all of a sudden the speaker power is gone. shocking.gif Can i just get the fuse replacement at any electrical shop ?

You're very lucky lol i've been using this speaker for like a week and a half ? Lol. doh.gif

Anyway, i'm happy to report that it is the fuse that blew up. I replaced it with another 2A fuse though i'm not sure it's a slow burn type but it works nontheless. What a relief. Oh RM2 for 4 2A fuses just in case it burns again. laugh.gif I think it was because i was vaccuming my room yesterday. Maybe somewhat because of the high power of the vacuum it overloads the speaker circuit or something. sweat.gif Here's a pic of the original fuse and the one i replaced it with.

The bottom fuse is the original one.

Well if you're annoyed with the fuse too easy burning, get a 4A one instead of 2A. Don't get any more than that or you might kill the speaker for sure.

I don't have that sound when switching input.

I just bought myself a coax and optical cable to test. I was surprised at how much difference the sound is. Music sounds so much better even though it's just MP3. Not much difference to me between coax and optical though. But i'm using optical now for music. biggrin.gif

Added on July 17, 2007, 5:58 pmSo, i have all 3 inputs at the back of the control center lol. For the optical & coax i use my built in Realtek onboard sound as i don't have the Digital I/O module for my X-Fi. >_>;

Hey guys i found these nice tips when i was looking on how to find out the firmware version of the control center. rclxms.gif

Activating the Z-5500's hidden features

The more I use and play with this unit the better it gets... after sleuthing on the web I found you could set the Control Panel to display a "second skin" plus more.

1. Activating the Second Skin

Basically this changes the level display for the volume control to a "stepped" type display instead of the default "bar" display. It also changes the color of the LED when in standby mode from red to purple... how cool is that?

To toggle between the first and second skins, first set the unit to standby mode, then press Input + Effect + Settings + Mute simultaneously for 6 seconds. Once you see the LED flash for 2 seconds, you would have toggled to a new "skin". The only downside to this "second skin" is that the volume is about half as loud as the main skin's.

2. Enabling volume offset for Analog sources

Okay so you noticed Direct 6 Channel analog mode is lower in volume compared to Optical and Coaxial digital. If you want to "normalize" the level here is how you do it:

While in 6 Channel Direct mode, hold down the Mute button and start rotating the volume knob while keeping the Mute button down. Note that the display now shows "offset" values.

3. Displaying firmware version and resetting to factory settings

Set the unit to standby mode then press Input + Settings simultaneously for 6 seconds. This will display the firmware version for a few seconds and will also reset the settings to their original factory values.

4. Displaying the digital stream type/mode

Set the unit to standby mode then press Input + Effect simultaneously for 6 seconds. This will put the Control Center in "Diagnostic Mode". Now everytime you the Z-5500 is fed a digital stream (DTS, DD, etc.), it will display the stream information (format, bitrate, etc.) for 5 seconds in place of the DD or DTS logo before returning to the standard display.

Apparently i have firmware version 2.0.9. smile.gif

Added on July 21, 2007, 1:38 amOh and i'm planning to change the speaker cable. What's a good cable ? Something average priced.

My X-Fi Digital I/O Module should arrive next week. Right now i'm using my onboard Realtek HD Audio Digital Output.

Tried #4 from the guide, interesting haha...

ya i use the ps3 optical output to my z5500s. pc i used direct6 channel...wanted to get coax but have to buy a damn i/o converter for the soundcard! more cash! sad.gif
*
X-Fi? The Digital I/O Module is just RM72 in Trade Zone. Limited though. Mine should arrive next week.

Anyway i was at Lowyat Plaza today because my SPACE UTM class got cancelled so i decided to hang around for a bit and find my speaker cable. I bought 20m worth of cable from that audiophile shop at the ground floor. It's a silver copper branded Pyramid (ever heard of this brand ?) cable with thick plastic thingy covering it. Worth RM250. sweat.gif I already have a cheapo optical connector that i bought from Giant, but that shop offered me an optical cable worth RM99 for RM50 so i ended up spending RM300 at that shop. sweat.gif Now i'm using the cables, i have no idea the cable will need burning in or whatever but it sure sounds damn good. nod.gif

^ I think any A/V shop should have that cable.

Changing the cable, i didn't hear that much difference. The advantage maybe less interference due the thick cable housing and the combination of silver and copper. But changing from analog to digital definitely can hear the difference. Bass is less boomy and voice and the sound in the background are much clearer. You can hear instruments with more details too. biggrin.gif

hi all,
i am going to be a Z5500 user very very soon.
now my house is doing renovation,
and i wish my cable/wiring to my rear satelites to be conceal.
i now wish to get confirmation from you guys..
that'll be.. is the cable in good quality is essential ?
i've been looking at the cable..
some cheap but affordable @ RM 3/m ( not copper based but in silver color)
better quality selling @ RM 7/m (copper based more thick and density)
so.... i do wish you guys can help out..
*
It's not that important but since you're at it, better use the good quality cable. Whether you notice the difference or not is a different story. tongue.gif

QUOTE(tunasandwich @ Aug 7 2007, 02:45 AM)
any idea where can i get the fuse for the logitech Z5500 ?
i think mine blew ....
*
You don't need a specific fuse. Just go to any electric shop and ask for 2A fuse. Go back home and replace the blown fuse and you're done. wink.gif

Wanna ask is it Z5500 got two types? Cause I see in the net there's one that the cable to connect from subwoofer to satellites use red/black wires, while most using RCA cables.
*
RCA ? Maybe that's the older version ? I dunno. doh.gif Coz mine and i think other user here all have the standard red black wire, which you can freely replace with any better wires, which is what i did. brows.gif

Questions:

1. This can be used as a home theater system?
2. If yes, Is a decoder needed for it to become a home theater system?
3. Which is the best place to get this item?
*
Sure.
It has it's own decoder but it doesn't have what latest dedicated amplifier have, only DTS and Dolby Digital. IMO it's morely suited for consoles (and PC) use.
Any shop on LYP should have it i think. ._.

Logitech updated this new version of the Z-5500's with normal wires instead of fixed coaxial ones, so you can easily get new wires for it.
Found this on newegg, so confirm the RCA ones are the older version. hmm.gif
