Hi. Thinking of ripping some of my DVD collection into my hard disk so seeking suggestion on how to do it. And what is your recommended ripping software to use. Thanks.

And may I further ask in what sort of format do you people keep your DVD rips? And can any of these DVD ripper also cut & merge several video into 1 file?

Why rip when u can download??? hehe. Anyway, long time no rip DVD...dunno how to do already...all my DVDs are R.I.P.

Me too, long time no rip ! But use to do it with the above...will rip into AVI to increase ratio in certain places...

just rip to MP4 or MKV (now popular)

x264/h264 is way superior than xvid anyway..
I wonder why scene group is still stuck with xvid and split movies to cd1/cd2 for dvdrips..

I rip using AnyDVD into .iso and I play from the file.

currently .mp4 and .mkv containers produces the smallest file sizes...

I would like to rip with the best picture quality with size a minor concern. So which ripper and what format? Thanks

In US yes, it's illegal. But Msia don't know. But some country allow it

If I buy CD and I have portable mp3 player, I rip CD to mp3..izzit illegal?

Thing is that your portable mp3 player isn't able to play the CD and therefore will require a digital format. On the other hand, as for the DVD, if you are able to rip it then your computer is able to read the disc, so why still rip the disc (so here it can get pretty suspicious)?

talking of which, i just pulled out a couple of old DVDs and played them. after 5 mins, i switched off the DVD player and put on the media player - so much better. 720p/1080p is additive - once you watched them, everything else is hopeless.

so, agree... waste of time trying to rip any dvd when better versions are available. ok, except for some very precious unique ones...

The issue is consumers do have a legal right to make personal copies of their movies/musics, but it's illegal to break through DVDs' anti-piracy technology called Content Scrambling System, or CSS.
So, in case of CD-Audio it is legal to make personal copy of your CD since it's not protected by anti-copy mechanism.
Well, that's in the US, but in Msia I'm not sure.
