hello guys,

I have two hard disk. The first is 80GB for linux and the other one, 20GB for my WinXP.
Is it possible to make dual boot on separate hard disk?

currently I had to change IDE cable from the other hard disk to another. My primary IDE is on linux, so if I want to use windows, I had to change the IDE and this is LECEH NAK MAMPUS.

because so far I only read about dual boot on the same hard disk (partition). But Im not sure whether this situation is likely?

anyone?

yeah this is possible. you can even map your *nix hdd to primary and windows to secondary. this way, when u remove your *nix hdd, the windows still operate normally. try google for it.

GRUB can do that.
No problem in doing dual boot from multiple hdd.

Especially in Suse, we can use YaST to set it up.

Cheers!

My linux is on primary master, second partition.
My Windows is on primary slave, first partition.
(In BIOS, i set it so it will boot from my primary master)
Here's my grub boot menu generated by YaST.
Example:-
---- START of /boot/grub/menu.lst ----
# Modified by YaST2.
gfxmenu (hd0,1)/boot/message
color white/blue black/light-gray
default 0
timeout 8

title linux
kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 hdc=ide-scsi vga=785
initrd (hd0,1)/boot/initrd

title Windows XP
map (hd1) (hd0)
root (hd1,0)
chainloader+1
makeactive

title floppy
root (fd0)
chainloader +1

title failsafe
kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz.shipped root=/dev/hda2 ide=nodma apm=off
acpi=off vga=normal nosmp maxcpus=0 disableapic 3
initrd (hd0,1)/boot/initrd.shipped
---- END of /boot/grub/menu.lst ----

Cheers!

It's because I like to split my HDD into partitions.
If you like to know more about this partition thing, please seek some help in the technical support/hardware/software forum.
Don't worry about the partitions yet. biggrin.gif
We don't need to have in depth knowledge on partition if we are to set up a dual booting system.
What's confusing you on this dual boot thinggy?

put ur windows hdd in primary ide, then *nix hdd in secondary. then from grub try to do the map thing, i.e map hd0 hd1 then hd1 hd0.
by doing this when u remove the *nix hdd, the windows still can be booted up. search around.

let see... for fedora core distributions

CODE

[joe@umbrella fedora]$ sudo cat /mnt/drvx/grub/grub.conf
# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE:  You have a /boot partition.  This means that
#          all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg.
#          root (hd0,0)
#          kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/hda11
#          initrd /initrd-version.img
#boot=/dev/hda
default=2
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Red Hat Linux 9 (2.4.20-31.9)
       root (hd0,0)
       kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-31.9 ro root=LABEL=/0 hdc=ide-scsi
       initrd /initrd-2.4.20-31.9.img

title Fedora Core (2.6.11-1.27_FC3)
       root (hd2,0)
       kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.11-1.27_FC3 ro root=LABEL=/2 quiet
       initrd /initrd-2.6.11-1.27_FC3.img

title Fedora Core (2.6.11-1.27_FC3) Console
       root (hd2,0)
       kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.11-1.27_FC3 ro root=LABEL=/2 quiet 3
       initrd /initrd-2.6.11-1.27_FC3.img

title Win98SE
       map (hd1,0) (hd0,0)
       map (hd0,0) (hd1,0)
       rootnoverify (hd1,0)
       chainloader +1

as you can see I have 3 HDD but the principle is the same
HDD1 (Primary Master) is RedHat 9
HDD2 (Primary Slave) is WinBlows
HDD3 (IDERaid 1) is FC3
but YMMV

BTW Primary master is always on HDD1 and primary slave is HDD2.

hey guys,

Finally I managed to fix the problem. Initially I would like to have both OSs on separate hard disk. Since its fukcing hard to do it, I decided to create partition on the 80GB hard disk.

First I installed XP, after that installed SuSe Pro 9.1 - and the rest is smooth sailing. YaST/Grub takes care all of the settings. All I have to do is click and click.

For the additional 20GB hard disk, I decided to make it as a repository for my media files, images and stuff so that I can share between the two OS. I set it as secondary, using FAT so that I read/write on it. So whenever im on Linux or Windows, i can access my mp3s and videos.

This is cool. A smart solution and the ability to switch OS is truly powerful
