I think the quality of video in Linux is slightly poorer compare to Window. When watching movie there seem to be an horizontal line running across the screen especially in action movie. But it is fine in Window XP. I figure it could be the graphic card driver or the X server display config kind of thing. It is a minor issue but just out of curiosity why this thing happen? Anyone face this issue?

QUOTE(-Hzu- @ Dec 23 2010, 12:55 PM) What distro are you using? Are you using nouveau driver or Nvidia's proprietary driver? If you are using Nvidia's driver, you have to enable "Sync to VBlank". I am using Ubuntu 10.10 with current nVidia driver install from "Additional Drivers". Now I manage to install glxgears and did a test. I attached below the screenshot. So where do I go from here? Thanks!

QUOTE(-Hzu- @ Dec 23 2010, 01:20 PM) This might help you. I read it few months ago and thought I'd to share it with you. http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=85301I try that and even download the latest nVidia driver and follow the instruction and the nVidia show the latest version. But still unsuccessful. Being doing that for the whole day. What is the different between Nouveau and nVidia driver? Is Nouveau better? How do I download Nouveau? Anyway many thank for all your help.

Recently I salvage 2 unit old computer Dell PowerEdge with Pentium 4 running at 2.4GHz, 40GB hard disk and 512MB RAM. Somehow the hard disk was install with Linux but I don't know what version because it stop half way and hang. The funny thing is when I try to format using Ubuntu and it fail and Window XP SP2 doesn't delete the partition either. Is it possible that Linux can prevent the hard disk from being format or partition being delete or is it that the hard disk already konk? I just want to reuse the computer again and install and test other Distros. Appreciate to those who help.

QUOTE(farkinid @ Jan 6 2011, 12:15 PM) Remove hard disks from computers and move very powerful magnet up and down the hard drive in slow yet purposeful manner...................... please don't do that... im joking. But seriously, just remove the drives and format them by attaching them to a different computer. Should not be an issue. Don't that but come out same result. I find it very odd. That 2 identical computer having the same problem. So I was just wondering, is there a Linux Distros that can protect the hard disk from being formatted? Anyway thanks for all your help.

QUOTE(farkinid @ Jan 7 2011, 02:40 PM) The only to prevent a drive from being formatted is physical write protection. I really can't imagine what sort of physical write protection is there on a hard drive. Are those special hard drives or soemthing? If not, then DBAN is your next option. Thanks! Already download and will try later. Hope it work. The hard disk seem ok. I got a feeling it was write protect or something. The hard disk brand is Seagate Barracuda 40GB IDE drives OEM. Nothing special about the drive. One more question. What software can actually write protect the hard disk? Any ideas anyone? Thanks again to those who help.

QUOTE(farkinid @ Jan 8 2011, 05:01 PM) Software write protection is program based. It may be a feature of the OS or a program. The only other thing I can imagine is firmware based write protection? I never heard of that before. Maybe someone here can enlighten me. Apart from that, if its software based, just bypass it by not loading the hard drive at all (ie DBAN). No luck with DBAN after several attempt. I try different method to wipe but it come with a non fatal error. I think it is a bad sector or a bad block. Any more ideas? I think it is a waste of a good hard disk. Anyway thank you guy for the guidance.

QUOTE(farkinid @ Jan 10 2011, 09:42 AM) Hmmm you have got quite an interesting situation here. Sounds like bad sectors. Have you scanned your hard drives using drive testing utilities? Just remember not to boot from those drives. When I put into another computer to scan. It just goes blank when power up and hang. I even try Ubuntu 10.04 but no luck. It just hang on the splash screen forever. Anyway I will try again when I got time. Thanks again! Added on January 10, 2011, 4:41 pmI just found out that the 2 unit of Dell PowerEdge is a server running on Linux. Is it possible that the hard disk can't be formatted because it is use as a server and there is some sort of write protection for Linux server? I had a Aztech USB wifi adapter and I try it on Debian but it doesn't seem to support my USB wifi adapter. But Ubuntu don't have this problem. Is there anyway I can download and install the driver? It uses a rt73USB chipset.

Recently my hand got itchy and try Debian Lenny stable version on an old Compaq computer with Pentium 4 2.0GHz, 256MB RAM and 20GB hard disk. Everything install ok except that my wireless USB doesn't work. Its an Azrtec wireless USB adapter and the firmware is Ralink rt25xxUSB or rt73usb I think. I try the Debian forum but no help. Anybody got any idea how to install the drivers or firmware?

But of course I can use a 30 feet network cable to connect my Wimax in the kitchen to my masterbed room to get it done but I thought I use another computer with Ubuntu 10.10 to download the firmware and install. Anybody got any idea how to do it? Thanks.

Finally I went out and get a 20m network cable and connect to my Debian PC and manage to install my wifi drivers and it seem to work for now. Sign! What a hassle but it worth it. Now posting with my Debian PC. Is the cable connection better than the wifi. It seem that the speed is faster?
