For those who still cannot decide whether to buy an Ipad with Wifi only or Wifi + 3G.

I was having problem deciding whether to buy the 3G version or the wifi version only because I am afraid i might be stuck without internet in places where there is no wifi internet access. But the premuim of Rm450 for the added 3G capabilities is too much and I have to pay extra for a data card which easily cost more than RM60 per month.

So I finally decided against the 3G version and bought the 64GB Wifi only ipad from lelong.com for RM2420 which 3 weeks later apple malaysia finally decided to launch the ipad in Malaysia. Could have save Rm250 if I delay my purchase for 3 weeks.

After toying around with my Ipad, I discover something call wifi teethering. I can actually download a software for my handphone and make my cellphone a wifi hotspot. So that solve the whole problem of not buying the 3G version as I can use my ipad to access the internet anywhere with my cellphone as long as there is a 3G coverage on my cellphone. That is just as good as having a 3G ipad. So I can have just one data plan for my cellphone and i can surf with my ipad too. I can even share the hotspot with my PC and my friends.

The wifi teethering software is available for most symbian, android and apple phones so regardless of what handphones you use, chances are you can dl a software to enable wifi teethering on your cellphone. I use Nokia 5800 and the software i use call JoikuSpot. Iphone user can dl mywi.

So for those who are on a tight budget or simply wanted to save $$$, just get wifi version and get your phone a wifi teethering software.

I'm using YES with their mobile hotspot called huddle. Since it has coverage in most areas, I cancelled all my data plans with Maxis and DiGi and use this to share Internet access for my Dell Streak, iPhone 3GS and hp mini 311 laptop.

I am not familiar with YES huddle. I know YTLe recently luanch Yes 4G but the pricing seems very unattractive. So how exactly do you share Yes 4G internet? Via phones?

3G interet is still too expensive. I sign up for celcom 1GB for RM38 per month so I only use it when I have no wifi access. I have PC at home, in office etc so its not a problem. I already have streamyx at home and in the office so that is where all my heavy surfing is done.

Btw, what kind of 3G services you use and how much?

I just wish that iPhone has apps other than MyWi to enable wifi tethering. To install MyWi, one need to JB his iPhone and im not a fan of JailBroken phone. Tried it once but it was totally not my thing. The pain of having to wait for new JailBreak software after new iOS released was too great to suffer!

I just wish they have MyWi in app store one day

Jailbreaking the iphone or ipad is so easy. You won't even notice its there yet it let you do so much more.

You don't have to jailbreak your phone to use wifi teethering unless you are using iPhones. I use nokia 5800 so I just google search for joikuspot and install in my hp and i'm ready to go.

I totally agree what lightning69 was mention. before I purchasing my iPad , I surf youtube for wifi & 3G model which is better. when i see 3G version no mater the telco company how strong , they only using 3G network.

surf Internet very slow compare with normal wifi . so I purchase my wifi 32GB with YES Huddle . But I need mention to u all I'm totally not agree u pay RM399 to brought a YES Huddle. it will burn all your money. because I'm a super heavy user I opened Yes huddle for everyday 24hour opening . since 19 December my account Rm50 now just left 20 means 5 day already burn my RM30. additional information is inside building the yes connection very slow mostly no connection also ..... they still a lot place not support yes . like kedah my home town . langsung no coverage !

I'm a celcom customer . my mobile line is build in unlimited Internet . last time using blackberry I lost it. so I finally search the web found this topic . so now I decided maybe purchasing iPhone then using the mywi but I not a jb fans also. so wondering . izzit got any blackbery application can do this also ?

btw it's tethering.

yes, I've been doing that for over a year now. started with my Nokia N86, then now the N900.

even before i have the iPad (which was like few days ago) I've been doing so with Joikuspot for my notebooks and other devices. biggrin.gif

now that I got my iPad and start downloading games, Joikuspot + Celcom 3G = iPad downloading dedicated line.

Apparently the other method to tether iPad to Blackberry is to use this device (no jailbreak required).

Cradlepoint Personal Wi-fi Hot Spot

It cost about USD100. Can't find anybody who supplies this in Malaysia.

Don't be afraid to jb. I jb my ipad the day i got it. Never regretted it as it allow me to things like multi-tasking and running apps in background which is not possible before ios 4.2.1

So far i have not notice any problem with jb and you won't notice any diiference at all.

Btw, jb is already legal in US.

Well, i have a iPhone 3GS with unlimited data, having an iPad with 3G doesnt really make a lot of sense, does it? I bought a 32Gb Wifi version.
Some people never take their iPad out of their house/workplace because it doesn't serve their purpose. Not everyone has the same purpose with the iPad.
Also, some people with multiple gadgets (phone, laptop, ipad, etc) might benefit having a mifi instead of having the 3G sim card stuck at the iPad. That's impractical portability.

I hope that helps you understand iPad wifi better.

Wi-fi is a must.

Don't really wanna pay for data on my phone and on iPad separately, another fixed monthly expense for data.

The question is do ipad really need a usb port?

One have to know that the iPad can only run software from applestore in ipa format. You cannot just put in any .exe and install in the iPad and make it work. But on the other hand, the ipad can open most of the popular file eg, pdf, words, photo, mp3 etc. Most of these files format can only be transfer to the ipad via iTunes at the moment. Will a USB port make it a lot easier to transfer these files? Certainly yes, but is there other way around it?

I have been fiddling around with a software call "Dropbox" for the ipad. It gives you like 2Gb online storage with a bunch of extra features. Basically what i do is put my files like pdf, jpg etc into dropbox on my pc and I can later open it on my iPad anywhere(internet connection required offcourse). So i don't really need a USB port to attach to my ipad to transfer files into it.

In the end, iPad is a simple device that don't carry the excess baggage it doesn't need. Use the ipad for what it is made for and you won't be disappointed.

Well, just read somewhere that on version 4.3, your iPhone can be a modem. So, whoever have an iPad wifii can simply get connected by using your iPhone. This is a good news. Time to buy an iPad. Really eyeing on this gadget but worry about 3G and wifii cause I do not want to jailbreak my iPhone to make it as a modem. And on the other hand, I also do not want to wast a few bucks on 3G iPad. Hopefully 4.3 will release soon.

I think blackberry only have usb tethering. Cannot do wifi tethering aka wifi hotspot.

Or u can do bluetooth tethering refer here http://forums.crackberry.com/f134/finally-...ifi-ftw-475732/

But it is quite troublesome.

Or the best way, is sell ur blackberry and buy android phone or other phone that support wifi hotspot. That's wat i did, i sold my bold 9700 and buy htc desire.

I've been thinking like wat u think, i love bbm... But then whynot use ym? Msn? Gtalk? Watsapp? All r the same instant messaging, u can talk with each other not only to bb owner. And the best part is surfing the net on ur touch screen phone is awesome compare to the small screen and lag blackberry. That's why i dump my bb and buy better phone wi more functions... Bb now is obselete bcoz we have more choice on better spec phone and internet connectivity for 24/7 r cheap now compare to 10 years ago when bb is the major player of mobile internet.

I am not sure about BB wifi teethering or can it even be done. Basically wifi teethering is running a software on your phone to utilise your phone 3G services and make your phone into a wifi hotspot so that other devices like laptop or ipad can connect and suft the net. So do BB has a wifi teethering software or not? You might want to google for that.

So before you rush out to get a new phone to do teethering, make sure you check if that particular phone model can do teethering.

I love using iPad at home, especially bedtime. Laptop too heavy. Net book kinda hot n battery can't last long as iPad.

I using hero n x10 for Gtalk.

I still prefer using Mifi for Internet connection.
