errmm...some questions from newbie here:
1) what is the cheapest price for the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM lens in KL? where can i find it? 2) is it compatible with the A33, as i heard there are incompatibility issues with sigma lenses? 3) is there a non-OS version of this lense? (should be cheaper, right?) cheers. |

QUOTE(yuhi @ Dec 29 2010, 04:49 PM) Hi, I'll replying to your question thx for the reply, yuhi. i see that u're also funding for the same lens in ur siggy. good luck.1) I'm not sure about the cheapest price for the Sigma 17-70mm because I'm not from KL but you can search for the sigma official distributor (can't remember the name of the company sry) 2) It is compatible with A33. The incompatibility issues are with old lenses which does not recognize the A33. Make sure you check when you buy it. If you have no choice then just send it back to Sigma for rechipping (should be free of charge). The new lenses from Sigma should have no problems whatsoever. 3) There is an older version of the lens (Its cheaper too) which has no OS but it does not have the HSM so there is no silent focus. If no HSM then you're better off getting something else such as the Tammy 17-50mm as the sound generated during focusing will annoy the hell out of you during video taking. Hope this helps to clarify a bit, correct me if I'm wrong =) i guess the newer version with OS should be better since it's with HSM. i thought i could save some money coz OS is already built-in with the A33. |

QUOTE(8tvt @ Dec 29 2010, 05:08 PM) i'm not really brand-specific. i just feel that the 17-70mm lens suits my needs and should compliment my 18-55 kit lens. i was aiming for the SAL18250 telephoto lens instead but i foresee that i'll just under-utilize it. if tamron offers a similar 17-70mm f2.8 lens, then i do not mind. zstan: it states that it's "new" on Sigma's website. i think it's the non-OS, non-HSM model that was discontinued. |

QUOTE(zstan @ Dec 29 2010, 05:45 PM) i know it's not constant. but my only other choice is the 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM, which is mightily expensive. i did hope that the 17-70mm would at least be a better option compared to the SAL1855. but maybe i'm wrong. |

QUOTE(yuhi @ Dec 30 2010, 10:30 AM) Pros and cons of the Sigma 17-70mm OS HSM thx for the info. now to find out how much it costs here in KL.Pros: 1.HSM - silent focus, really useful in capturing video as AF noise will not be recorded as it is not present. 2.Very short MFD (Minimum focus distance) - 22cm. So you could practically take close-ups of pics and be creative. (p.s. Its a really good camwhore lens LOL!) Tamron 17-50mm has a MFD of 27mm and the Carl Zeiss 1680z has MFD of 35cm. Albnok also refered to it as Sigma 17-70mm OS HSM "Macro" due to the short MFD and the long zoom which enables amazing close ups! 3.Built in OS - According to some reviews by people, the built in OS in the lens offers 1-2 stop extra image stabilization compared to the SSS in the Alpha bodies. It also offers stabilization in the view finder Cons: 1.No constant aperature 2.Price (if compared to the Tamron 17-50mm) |

1) anyone here own a tamron AF 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di II LD ASP IF Macro lens? is it worth getting as an all-round travel lens? want a telephoto lens but do not want to lug around my lenses while traveling abroad.
2) i found the Sigma 17-70MM F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM @ RM1630. is that a good price? coz i've no idea how much the market price is. |

was at studio zaloon today. loads of ppl there. whipped out my a33 to snap something for the competition, but my puny dslt immediately felt inferior amongst the larger dslr bros. nice doorgift, though.

doorgift was a tumbler, small towel and a box of tissue.
i wish they would at least throw in a lens or something. even the lowly 18-70mm lens would do. lol |

the a33 and a55 uses the same Exmorâ„¢ APS HD CMOS Sensor. it's just with different pixel densities.

QUOTE(zstan @ Jan 3 2011, 01:07 PM) i didn't claim anything la. as the price difference is not in the thousands of ringgit, it all depends on the individual. just like a 1.8 Inspira and 2.0 Inspira. same bloody car, same engine, slightly different specs. that doesn't mean the 2.0 is undervalued. both the a55 and a33 are good cameras. pay slightly more for slightly better features on the a55. the slight price difference is worth the slight specs difference for some, but not for others (like me).it's not like we're comparing it to an EOS 1D.my point is, and what i believe and read from is, a33 and a55 have different sensors. so by saying that a55 is 'only 2 megapixels better & got gps compared to the a33' is really undervaluing the a55. and yes, i could be totally wrong. Added on January 3, 2011, 1:27 pm my not so concrete source http://www.dyxum.com/dforum/is-there-a-big...topic70941.html heck, most ppl dun care if both cameras have different sensors or who manufactures them. as long as the person is happy with their money spent and not buy a dslr/dslt just for the sake of owning one when they can't even hold the damn camera properly (gives dslr n00bs like me a bad name). |

is the Sony 55-200mm f4-f5.6 lens a good buy?
i resisted getting the twin lens combo for my A33 coz i dun see the need for the 75-300mm lens. however, i tried my friend's sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG Macro lens and was hooked. but i dun really need such big focal lengths (plus it's expensive). |

QUOTE(zstan @ Jan 4 2011, 06:10 PM) optically wise its very good and sharp. but the focusing speed is loud and slow. bokeh is not bad too. one of my recent shot with the lens: ![]() Girl with DSLR by zstan, on Flickr QUOTE(linkinstreet @ Jan 4 2011, 07:18 PM) It's my sharpest lens to date, which tells a lot for a 2nd hand lens. My lens of choice during PC fair girls stalking nice to hear good reviews about it. it should compliment my sigma 17-70mm lens when it arrives. http://wakarimasenlol.com/2010/12/07/kuala...-show-2010/5251 should i sell my sal1855 kit lens then?? |

QUOTE(zstan @ Jan 5 2011, 09:31 AM) are you in need of cash? if not you never know when you might use it again...in case you buy another body then dun need get another lens..... not really, but since i've already bought the sigma 17-70mm lens, so i dun see the need for the sal1855. and i am also aiming for the sal55200. but also looking at the tamron 55-200mm lens. how is the performance compared to the sal55200? i also see the tamron 70-300mm lens on their website, but listed under full frame section. can use in APS-C SLR? damn.....must get a telephoto zoom lens b4 i travel to japan during cny. |

QUOTE(iamKiet @ Jan 5 2011, 12:53 PM) oh i'm sure i would have some use for it. i had a panny lumix dmc fz-28 with 18x zoom (equiv to about 27-486mm) and it was pretty handy for "spy shots". i like to cover all bases. both 17-70 and 55-200 should cover all bases. u'll never know...i might bump into a JAV actress or something. |

anyone with the SAL55200 experience any problems with the focus ring?? i just got the lens but when i switch to MF and turn the focus ring, there is a grinding/whirling sound. the lens still focuses smoothly though. and photos taken are clear and sharp. should i send it back to Sony? tested it at the sony centre @ 1-utama also didn't experience the problem, but back home...haihh....

QUOTE(albnok @ Jan 6 2011, 01:17 AM) deathbringer: It sounds like gear stripping if: nope, there's no "rotating to infinity" or "mad vibrations". just the annoying whirling sounds.- mount lens on camera with lens AF/MF switch set to AF (if it is the SAM version) and camera set to AF - the lens immediately rotates to infinity, and starts vibrating madly It could be that either camera or lens was set to MF when at the shop. Note that when using the Sony 55-200mm F4-5.6 DT SAM (II) you need to turn the switch on the lens to MF in order to manual focus - if not, you will be working against the SAM motor. time to go back to that shop i suppose. |

QUOTE(albnok @ Jan 6 2011, 01:37 AM) deathbringer: it's the SAL55200, not SAL55200/2. so no AF/MF switch on the lens. and surprisingly, i can't seem to replicate the sound now. silence only when using MF (switched to MF on my A33). What is your camera, and does your 55-200mm have an AF/MF switch on the lens? The A550 onwards did not seem to drive a SAM lens to infinity automatically - a departure from previous convention where all Alphas would reset the lens to infinity upon mounting the lens. this was more of an impulse buy as they were letting go of some old stock @ RM699. after testing it, i couldn't resist. maybe i should have backed off and looked for the SAL55200/2. oh well, looks like i'll probably hang on to it to hone my skills or sell it. |
