I strongly disagree here man, I've been working out at home with a pair of dumbbells and a barbell for two years now, and although I'm not the biggest guy here, I'm not thin either. Its a matter of knowledge, how to use the dumbbells. Shoulders = Lateral raises, side raises, military presses.
Chest = Flies, bench press.
Biceps = Concentration curls, 21s, hammer curls, normal curls.
Triceps = Skull crushers, close grip bench presses, kick backs.
Legs = Dumbbell squats
Back = Rows.
See? You can perform all those with your dumbbells man. Although you can't AS much variety as working out in the gym, you can still workout all parts of your body.
