Anyone can recommend some good online bookstore, I'm tired looking for my favorite book in Malaysia bookstore.. Our government keep on encouraging the people to read more, yet our book is so expensive and very limited choice.. mad.gif mad.gif

hey I'm into photography as well and unfortunately I've learnt that books about photography are really expensive. i think they base tax on price and not weight. maybe you can try amazon.com or acmamall.com? both offer good selection of books. hope this helps biggrin.gif

You may visit www.amazon.com - one of my favourite online bookstore, price can be similar as some Malaysia book store (due to stonger RM vs USD). Also, it has books that Malaysia bookstore don't have

I recently started a blog review about books, take a look for more updates.

Hey, I'm new to online bookstore. I know this site through the previous post: http://www.bookdepository.co.uk

1.Can I know what do I need if I want to buy a book in that site? Credit card? Is it safe?
2.It is stated there that free delivery, that means the price listed there is the only price I need to pay?
3. I'm totally new to this, so anyone can provide procedures, instructions or reminders for me?

Btw, the novel I want to buy is Mockingjay. It is about RM40 here but it's only $8.19, as stated in that site. I would save a lot if I can buy it online! Thank you for your helps! biggrin.gif

1) You'll need an account and credit card is fine.
2) Yes but just check when you're checking out, if you need to pay any delivery charges, it will be stated before you confirm your purchase.

1. I've bought using credit card from that site numerous times without any problems, so i feel safe using my credit card there
2. for bookdepository.co.uk, the price of the book is all that you need to pay. there are no delivery charges or any extra charges.
3. the books will arrive in about 2 weeks. if you order more than 2 books, each book will arrive separately - so don't panic if you receive only one book because the rest should arrive in a day or two (for me they usually arrive on the same day)

Tyvm for the replies! ^^ rclxms.gif

I notice that Amazon.com requires us to pay shipment fees of $13.00....that mean I the book I want to buy is $7.00, I need to pay $20.00?? Ty!

Btw, although there is no shipment fee for http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/, but the fee is more expensive than amazon one... T_T

i noticed that too. the prices on bookdepository is higher compared to amazon.
then we'll just need to add books that we wanted in the cart, compared both shop, which is cheaper.
1) Buy from amazon(cheaper price for the books) + shipping costs.
2) Buy from bookdepository. More expensive books, but free shipping.
And decide for ourselves, which is cheaper.

Added on December 27, 2010, 5:46 pmand maybe if anyone find out any coupons for bookdepository, we could share them here. =)

Added on December 27, 2010, 5:53 pmfound a 10% coupon for bookdepository.

Hi Aron

Have been using bookdepository for a while now, & am quite pleased. When you factor delivery costs, it's much cheaper than Amazon UK/ US & than the local bookstores.

The one time I had a problem with a delivery (it was slow in coming), the customer service people were willing to give me an immediate refund / re-delivery.

Hey AronC,

I have nothing but praise for Book Depository. If there is any downside to it, it would only be that it ships each book as a separate package even if you place them in a single order. Doesn't hurt the wallet as the shipping is free but it makes the greenie in me annoyed. tongue.gif

hi guys, im gonna rush an order with bookdepository before the 20th so i can enjoy the discounts- i realised that mangas are so damn cheap compared to kino, which is like, the only place i know of which sells us-version manga.

however, one thing that's bugging me is the postal service. i stay in jb, and you know, all those things ive heard about poslaju... should i be concerned with poslaju? will my books arrive unharmed? have any of you ever lost your books thru poslaju?

i have a question on The Book Depository website, hope u guys could help me out smile.gif im interested in buying Gemma Townley's book titled Little White Lies. But i just couldn't understand why is it that they have 2 different prices on the same title? One is priced at $7.18 while the other one is $11.66. Moreover the one which is $11.66, the publication year is even much earlier than the $7.18. It doesn't state that it's a second-hand book either sad.gif Any solutions? Thanks!

Update : I have found the solution: it turns out that the cheaper one is Paperback, while the more expensive one is a Trade Paperback biggrin.gif

Well Bookdepository is trustworthy but sometimes Pos Malaysia will 'misplace' your books. My recent order (last month) of 4 books ended up with two of them being sent to another address! sad.gif shocking.gif Luckily the person was kind enough to drop off those two books at my place. biggrin.gif

But I suppose if the books really do end up getting lost, Bookdepository would issue you a refund.

I was wondering, will the Customs taxed our purchase(from BookDepo or Amazon) if the purchase is over RM500?

Anyone had the experience?

I just placed an order at Bookdepository on April 18. On the website it stated that orders will be dispatched within 24 hours, but mine took 2 days.

How long did your order took to arrive? I read on a blog (Malaysian), the author said around 3-4 weeks.. but I really need it fast coz it's my textbook..

well i just got my books from Book Depository. it usually took 48 hours to dispatched and usually will reach around 3-4 weeks (like the author had said) But they will separate your books though. If u order 2 books both will arrive on different days blink.gif but overall it's good my books arrived in good quality biggrin.gif

Very much cheaper. For example one of the books I got from BookDepository was retailing at USD30 (RM90) vs. RM130 at Kinokuniya.

I ordered 5 books from Book Depository earlier this month. Received 1 yesterday + 3 today. Still waiting for 1 more. A bit weird that they came in a package each. Books came via normal postman, I was expecting Pos Laju, but books are placed in bubble wrap envelopes, so condition is tip top. Nice! rclxms.gif

I wanted to try buying books from the borders online since there are some books that I find I can get it at a cheaper price.

However, I am facing the problem where I do not how to fill my address.
Since the website does not allowed special characters such as "/" or".", how should I write if parts of my address is Jalan 2/3 E, what can I put instead of the "/"

Added on June 2, 2011, 8:20 amFinally, solved my problem and turned to betterworldforbook.
Ordered two book and I am looking forward to reach my house.

For those who had bought books from this sites, anyone has idea that the how long will the books took to reach here?

Nice thread. I just ordered from the book depository. I do have a question, though. If the books are sent via normal mail, what if the parcel is larger than the mailbox? Will our friend the postman just throw it into the house compound like our other friend the newspaperman? Uh oh!

Another question. How much does Amazon.com charge for shipping?

Anyway, acmamall.com is pretty new. I've heard that some of their books are priced cheaper than Kino's price. Others are more expensive.

Delivery is handled by the Malaysia post. How they would handle the parcel is no different than any other big deliveries. It all depends on the postman.

I live in the UK and it may take up to two weeks before my book arrives. Amazon.co.uk takes about 1 week too for free delivery. So I would consider delivery to Malaysia in three weeks + to be about right. If you don't get your books soon, drop them an email.

This is just a sidetrack from the thread but Mockingjay is a really amazing book! I liked the first of the series The Hunger Games better, but I thought Mockingjay was a really good closing to the whole trilogy smile.gif Enjoy reading it!

i buy my books from acmamall...free delivery if you order more than 3 books...best of all...always hv discount...i buy my books when they hv 30% or higher discount. delivery abt 2 wks.

imagine a book at rm35.90 after 33% discount cost only rm24.05....each book abt rm10 less than in book stores.
i always wait until ihv more than 5 books or more before i order.
so far i hv used acmamall maybe abt 6x for the past 2 yrs.....no problem but once they screw up delivery when they send another guy's order to me but it was settled within another 3 days.

only problem is their website....sometimes u key in the title, their search program fails to locate the book...so i type in the isbn no.
you can also pre-order books or order hard to locate books, they will find for you.

Just tried ordering books from book depository. Although the prices are quite close to local market, but I do get my boxset for A song of ice and fire delivered in about 2 weeks. Free delivery and the packaging by royal mail is top notch.

Hey everyone, may I know how PayPal works? What do I need? and is it safer than credit card? Thanks^^
*
Safer than credit card since you don't have to expose your CC number, paypal has buyer protection where you can dispute and get back your money anytime as long as it's on your side (example given tracking code shows item in nowhere or not exist), where CC you can call to revert your payments too.

I found that it is cheaper for you to place your order at bookdepository.com compare to bookdepository.co.uk.

You guys can compare the websites. I tried few times and there is really price difference.

Not sure if our post office screwed up or they are stuck in customs awaiting censorship. tongue.gif

Yeah, have to check both sites if you want to save more. Sometimes, competitions/offers appears first in the UK website too, like the summer thing they had going on last time.

Anyway, the fastest I've received a book from TBD was a week, slowest was about a month.
All books arrived separately even though ordered in one lot.
Paperback books arrived in padded envelopes while hardcover books in small, box-like envelope.
The only downside is you can't track your parcel; you just know it has been shipped.

Any of you guys have tried fishpond.com.my? The books are very cheap but I wonder if it's an error because even their worldwide site is not that cheap!

Their price list updated to USD. Now it make sense. The previous cheap price in MYR was a mistake.

Added on September 3, 2011, 9:05 amOne question. Books that are bought from online website such as bookdepository, do they qualify for income tax rebate?

No wonder it's so cheap back then... i did go back and check the website and was astonished to see it in USD. I thought i saw it wrongly. Thanks for the clarification.

I read somewhere (can't remember though) that they qualify for the rebate. Not sure if it's for online Malaysian seller only or for any online seller though. I hope other people can help clarify.

i think they will try to deliver for 1~3x, if they still cant get you, they will put a notes and you'll have to self-collect at your nearest pos office / where they assign the parcel.

Hi Guys! I bought 4 books from BookDepository too but none arrive to my house after 4 weeks. I don't know if there is any postal problem to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Luckily BD refunded the money in full, though I have to absorb a slight exchange loss

Hi!

Mine was shipped on 30/4 and they said I can drop them an email if it hasn't arrived until 14/5.
Since your experience says it takes kinda long to reach us,
shall I wait for one month or just drop them an email saying that I haven't received it?

Thanks!

That expected date applies to countries with proper mail couriers, unlike Malaysia sad.gif

I usually wait an extra week or 2 before contacting them.

The reason why I do this is because if everyone complains to BD about late shipments they will have to refund/resend a lot of parcels. Eventually, selling to Malaysians will become unprofitable and they'll stop shipping to Malaysia. That's my worry.

Malaysian arrival for air parcel delivery sure is a real big bummer. Already placed my order and it was dispatched by BD over 4 weeks ago and no sign of it appearing yet. Really missed the delivery time I got in Europe, all orders received in an average of five days or less. Heck even Aussie average delivery for their orders is way better than this and they are located way further below across the continent to UK/US.

I really wonder if it's the lack of competent in our customs, postal or transport or a combination of thereof causing all the holdup. rolleyes.gif

Yo guys, I'm new here. Just wanna know, if the graphic novel at book depository is $17, I'll only pay that $17 right? Or is there a tax? I've read the above posts and noticed that they don't include tax but that was 2-3 years ago.

Just wanna know how things work now smile.gif

SuperSamurai... you only pay the price... I've not been charged shipping or tax before.

As for those waiting for their packages... it should get here. BD is quite reliable I've found though all the packages dont arrive at the same time. Which is strange cos it just costs them more in shipping.

Not really. BD play a fixed shipping rate to the postal provider. That means that they pay a fixed shipping fee to the postal company for all their books daily as long as it doesn't exceed a certain weight in total.

anyone interest to get book from www.amazon.in? just notice the book in this website is damn cheap, even cheaper 70% off compare to amazon.com usa site.
For example a USD20 = RM60 book is only sold for RM18 in amazon.in

the forex rate for ur reference.
100 rupee = RM1
$1 USD dollar = RM3.3

Just out of curiosity I tried to order a book. Apparently they don't deliver outside of India.

I'd be curious how much shipping from India to Malaysia would cost if we to get an agent to do the delivery from India.

Correct. I don't order anything from overseas during Raya, CNY and Christmas time. Crazy backlog and risk of losing your package due to high volume.

I remember someone posted on LYN that they ordered something around Christmas time and received it in June.

Agreed. But usually arrived, though late. If u want to read it urgently, dont order through BD.

Nowadays I'm using betterworldbooks. free delivery as well, and the books are 2nd hand, but in good and excellent condition, except those from libraries

their prices way cheaper, and delivery also not bad. sometimes 2-3 weeks. i can wait..

Stumbled across this site few months ago, http://www.betterworldbooks.com/.
They also advocate free shipping and are a charity organization fighting against world illiteracy.
Haven't bought anything from them though.
