Review:

QUOTE
Since the advent of Android in 2009, the family of devices running Google’s mobile OS has grown from one handset to now hundreds and possibly thousands of unique models. In recent months, Android has seen an explosion of devices coming from lesser-known Asian manufacturers, with one of the main selling points being price. The manufacturers realized that with Android they had a readily and freely accessible operating system, a large market of potential customers, and all they had to do was put together a cheap device to capitalize on Android’s continued growth. Unfortunately, these devices often cut corners where things mattered the most – poor displays, resistive touchscreens, bad build quality and a litany of other crimes against the gods of consumer electronics.

One phone has stepped forward and separated itself from the rabble. The ZTE Blade, unveiled to but a murmur of interest at MWC2010 in February, has now made the existential leap from China to the United Kingdom, assuming a new identity as the Orange San Francisco. It is unclear what the relevance of the Californian city’s name to this device is, but Orange have established a pattern of naming their rebranded phones after American cities. Retailing at a mere £99 ($160) on pre-pay, you would be forgiven for lumping in the Blade with a whole host of other must-try-harders and moving on. However, take a closer look at the Blade’s spec sheet and your interest may be piqued…

LOL! I have not used Android before but from what I can see after playing with it for awhile, it's great for customization and very fun to mess around with (rooting). Compared to iOS, iOS is super boring. But what I like about my iPhone is that I can buy a 16gb or 32gb phone and it works out of the box. No need to root/wipe out/etc and no need to splash extra cash for another microSD for space. My 32gb is filled already with music and apps... i don't think I'd like to spend an extra 300 for a fast 32gb microSD in addition to a 2K phone like the xperia Arc...

anyhow that's my gripe about android. Other than that, I'm liking the way you can customize the homescreen wink.gif and the multitude of ROMs to choose from.

I must say, this Orange San Fran has a HUGE following over at Modaco and the number of custom ROMs it has really makes it a superb buy for you to mess around.

Yup... It's a good example of how much you can put in a phone and yet price it so cheap... Makes you feel ripped off by HtC, and the othe companies...

Played with the SE Arc today... Damn it's sexy

First orange launched vegas (it seemed to be the most cheapest phone yawn.gif tongue.gif in 2009 to me as compared to other branded mobile phones), then came orange san francisco (well it was quite good with entry level hardware but didn't impressed me wink.gif ) and now orange barcelona. So far i found orange mainly customizing zte phones but why dont they create something innovative rather than customizing zte's mad.gif (coz previous two phones vegas and san francisco were modification of ZTE phone models brows.gif ) and now they changed their mind customizing even huawei phones tongue.gif.

In my opinion buying francisco on contract with orange is not a good idea (unfortunately my brother bought it on contract with orange for 18 mnths jst 2 weeks ago and this is where he made a mistake sad.gif ) as their business monopolies restricts the built in orange android os to be upgraded to other available open source android versions while all other smart phones running on android os (either gingerbread or froyo) could be easily upgraded to latest os version as per an individuals will however this is not the case with orange san francisco. mad.gif

Touch screen seems quite impressive to me with useful compass, gps, orientation sensor however there are lots of useless software which makes it difficult to use even making it slow and also lacks functionality. But orange san francisco as per its price is jst an entry level android but to me it seems quite impressive while battery (Oh my god it really sucks), os 2.1 and 3.2mp camera are totally rubbish. So to individuals opting for a budget friendly android i feel it its not that bad.

I flashed my gen1 OSF to Gen2 and flashed Ginger Stir Fry onto it. So far so good. Much smoother than my Swedish spring, partly coz I created ext2 partition on my sdcard so that gave me 250mb free internal memory straightaway!

4gb is plenty enough unless u whack in alot of music and videos. I've got a 16gb which is not enough for my music... but then again the OSF isn't a phone to listen to music to.

how's the SGS2? any great custom roms on that phone yet? just abit fedup with my OSF's camera

Usually from 8am to 12am, I will still hv 10% left. Edge data on all the time, about 50 mins of calls, quite a lot of SMS and whatsapp.

If not much calls or SMS, the phone can last 1.5 days...

Tempted to upgrade n sell my osf

I have the same issues like Gilthoniel, damn angry with full charge and 3g enable just can last 4 hours.
with CM7 2.3.4

but after i upgrade to Mr Elitemovil 2.3.5 now, i can last for 20 hours with 3g enable flex.gif
with 1250mAh, it is very good performance already, if you compare with other which have at least 1500mAh drool.gif

it is very stable for me, there are 2 version of 2.3.5 which is r8 and r8_2
r8_2 is not suitable for me because i found that battery life only 14hours and wifi still have issues, but a fix version already release to fix the bugs
well, I'm no yet try the fix release...i'm waiting for others feedback about the fix release version others bug

with r8 which i'm using now is quite stable, it have 1 problem which very time restart
the language will become spanish, and the timezone will become GMT 0 not +8
so far this is the only issues i found now, but it is not so trouble me as i'm never reboot phone icon_rolleyes.gif

yes, the stock rom is froyo 2.2 now, but i never test the battery as i direct flash the cm7 rom after get the mobile laugh.gif
