Tenaga Nasional Bhd has signed a heads of agreement with SIPP Energy Sdn Bhd today for the proposed combined-cycle power plant known as Track 4A in Pasir Gudang, Johor.

According to Tenaga's filing with Bursa Malaysia, the power plant will have an estimated capacity of between 1,000 MW and 1,400 MW.

"[The agreement is] signifying the principal terms of the proposed joint venture with SIPP Energy Sdn Bhd, which will undertake to build, own and operate a power plant of approximately 1,000 MW - 1,400 MW on a land in Pasir Gudang, Johor," Tenaga said.

I dont understand the logic, utilities are necessities and increasing the tariff on regular basis is obviously not required if they are making tons of money.

"Tenaga Nasional Bhd has made its highest ever net profit of RM6.4 billion in financial year ended August 2014 which is an 18.5 per cent increase compared to RM5.4 billion last year.

Its chairman Tan Sri Leo Moggie said the rise was attributed to a reduction in corporate tax which account 54 per cent of the RM1 billion increase as well as lower coal prices at US$83.6 a tonne.

Tenaga Nasional also invested a record high of RM10 billion in capital expenditure during the year to ensure a steady and reliable supply of electricity."

You're thinking like PR... remember when Khalid said "we do not need any more dams, we are not going to run out of water any time soon" ? what happened years later? smile.gif

Consumers may see electricity tariffs revised downward in the second half of this year due lower coal prices and Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s (TNB) lesser reliance on gas power plants.

According to a source, TNB along with other power-generation companies such as Malakoff Corp Bhd were now opting for higher coal usage for their power generation.

The source says that with lower crude oil and coal prices, as well as the shift of fuel mix gravitating from gas to coal, it would enable power-generation companies to operate and a lower production cost.
