i'm using a USB3.0 2.5" hard drive and i haven't encountered that problem at all. the issue is dated back to november of 2010 and i only got my hard drive about 3 months ago. so i assume the problem has been fixed?

i downgraded my nVidia driver version from 275.33 to 259.51 (the default pre-installed factory version) and my temps went down from the usual 65c+ to an average of 55c now. huge difference in temps. hmmm..

Btw, do you always keep monitoring the nVidia temp? You shouldn't done that to let it sleep instead of waking up periodically just to check the temp and increasing the power consumption/heat..

i monitor the nvidia gpu temps by leaving the laptop on idle with hwmonitor on, and coming back every 10minutes over a span of an hour to check on the temps.

Won't that be keeping the nVidia keep awake ? Why not just keep using Intel HD ?

I see.
The temp difference for different driver, might be because the nVidia Powermizer not working properly..
e.g. The nVidia run at full speed although just idling (Powermizer is not working)
