i use google navigation. all u need is to install brut maps. which is a cracked version of google maps. and walla, u get google navigation. there is turn by turn voice navigation, updated maps as per mantained by google maps.
only downside is that u need a decent data plan...

basically a-gps uses cell towers information to roughly determine where u at. once it gets a gps lock, then it zeroes to your exact location.
that is why, sometimes, if ur phone is having dificulity locking on a decent gps signal ( u need a min of 3 sats to bounce signals off) u usually get the general location of where u are, this is determined via the cell tower information ...
