because BIG names are usually well commercialized hence most of the fresh grads only knows those like Shell, Petronas, Exxon and so on..
Anyway, its nice to see seniors like you, sharing about the service companies like you mentioned such as, Baker Hughes, FMC, Scomi and so on.

I notice that forummers here only aim for BIG names and well known major players in the oil and gas industry and doesn't
have a very good knowledge and awareness on lesser known O&G companies.
Little do you know that these lesser known companies are more prone and likely to hire fresh grads compared to the big kahunas like
Shell, Petronas & Exxon Mobil.

Also, fresh grads shouldn't aim for operators only and instead focus your energy more on service hand companies eg Geoservices, Baker
Atlas, Halliburton, FMC, Cameron, Gyro, Scientific Drilling, Weatherford, Scomi (Malay's favorite company), MI-Swaco etc.
These companies are good career launching pad and forget about slugging it with ten thousands of candidates in SLB and
Shell.

Good luck hunting!

Geoservices, Baker Atlas, Halliburton, FMC, Cameron - all applied, either no feedback or got rejected.
Not aiming on big companies only but for Shell, I have to apply cos I'm a scholar. Now that i got released, I'm happy that i went up until the FEP for SLB. Not aiming only for these two, but these two give feedback. Done with the FEP, now I'm back with job hunting. Still waiting for feedback from Baker though. I applied there way earlier than SLB but....haiz. why la no feedback... I've had enough getting frustrated.

Hey look at the bright side, at least applying to all these companies allowed you to learn more about the different companies in the industry. At least that's how it is for me, I'm learning quite a lot reading up the company websites, so that I'll have some 'ammo' if I get called up for interviews.

Only problem is the extremely low success rate. Sometimes I'm happy even to get a rejection email. doh.gif

hi guys..i have a question..is it possible for somebody with no geology/geophysics background become a geophysicist? is there any seismic data processing/management courses to take? rclxms.gif
*
Extremely difficult. For these kind of positions you really need to have at minimum a BSc in Physics (I know of a Geophysicists who had a degree in Physics from USM but he's been doing Geophysics for the last 20 years so that was a long time ago). Nowadays, if you do not have a degree in Geology/Geophysics, you will not get that position.

Taking a couple of courses won't cut it.

Exxon typically hires master student in geology.. so you probably need to spend 2yrs to do that..
that might helps..

yes it is possible.
But preference will always fall to those who had G&G background.
You might be fitter elsewhere depends on your personal background.
Any specific reason why you choose to be a geophysicist? other field might be more rewarding to you
